I think the most depressing part for me is that since the Fentanyl started going around I've lost more friends than I can count on both hands to it. You passed by 3 of their homes in this and my stomach sank. This whole valley is cursed.
My mom is 93 and grew up here. She moved away after college in 1950. We used to visit family every summer until the early seventies. It’s changed a lot since then. After the coal mining ended due to it’s slow demise and finally the Knox mining disaster things changed dramatically. Before that it was very diverse with lots of immigrants ( Welsh, Germans, Irish, Poles, Syrian, Italian, etc) here for the jobs in the mines; everyone had a job and many if not most owned their home. It was a safe and vibrant mid size city, with a strong patriotic spirit having sent many to WW2. In the early Twentieth Century even ( unfortunately) young kids worked in the mines. After the industrial base disappeared ( mining, iron manufacturing, etc) the jobs disappeared and the economy changed. Then, the flood in the seventies struck another blow.
my dad is 87, and was born & raised in wilkes barre until right after ww2. my grandfather was a dynamite blaster in the mines. black lung from coal dust killed him (years later after they moved to balitmore).
I'VE LIVED IN THIS AREA MY WHOLE LIFE. I CAN TELL YOU AREN'T FAMILIAR WITH THIS AREA LOL. IF I TIED UP A JUMBLED UP KNOT, THAT'S THE ROUTE YOU DROVE LOL.

Honestly if some of the community would just go around their property and clean up,it is not that bad. Compared with other communities. Although crime is on the rise😥

The cookiecutter houses form desolate neighborboods that look like strip mines. It took me back to a time where someone was always yelling at me, and shop keepers and university professors generally were miserable and narrow minded and bigoted. Cold winds of negativity blow thru that Wyoming Valley. People there harbor a dark unhappiness they’re not allowed to express. Every house looks like a coal shanty with faded white 70’s aluminum siding and slatted metal awnings over their windows.
