- Tense despite the constant joking amongst themselves, a group of a dozen soldiers wait in Chasiv Yar for an armoured vehicle to take them to the Bakhmut frontline. In addition to their weapons - rifles and RPG rocket launchers - the soldiers also carry large shovels, to build trenches in the new position where they will be posted. "We don't know where we go, it's classified, we infantry soldiers are told right before we move," a soldier with the call sign "Kit" says.

[Edit] Since this post I've seen the green tape used in various units, both some I think were special forces, and some who seemed to be volunteers doing some non-combat tasks. So now I have the impression that "green tape" merely means "on the Ukrainian side" and used for any type of unit.

Those with green armbands means they are rookies and being sent to frontlines. In urban warfare, easier to defend with less experience.
Those in yellow armbands are professional army meaning they are typically deployed in open areas which requires more experience.

one is a volunteer from USA i believe...likely an UKR American who can speak UKR and assigned to this UKR unit rather than an English speaking international legion...i think the trend for international volunteers is to wear all UKR insignia and unit patches but have a subdued flag of their county of origin as an additional sleeve or chest patch

-White, Red or Orange-Black bands for Russians (and a lot of the times no bands at all). Usually the white bands are quite thick and also applied as both armbands and legbands.
-Green, yellow or blue bands for Ukrainians. Usually just armbands, I haven't seen too many legbands. But they also apply them on their helmets and some have yellow-blue colorings on the rifles sometimes.
The Russian uniforms vary drastically.. LNR/DNR used similar stripe shades as the Ukrainians. Russians usually had the green-green ones in the beginning.. hence why they called them "green men". But in the winter the shades are different for camouflage purposes in the snow.. Also Russia lacked significant amounts of uniforms.. so they figured some ad-hoc solution for the mobilized.
The Ukrainian uniforms in general were beige-lighter green. But they also have some darker green shades. Not homogeneous. Hence the bands are the give-away usually for both sides. Provided.. either side isn't lying or wearing fake bands.
You translate it as freshman and education but the man's not talking about high school. He's talking about untrained troops being thrown on the front lines.
