It's super easy to understand. He was just trying to be friendly, he could tell something became awkward but not knowing the language he just got the "something just got awkward" part. Its something we rarely do but from my POV I think that is what he's trying to express/say since Subaru seems a little tense because of the language barrier (even though the VNese guy knew a little bit of Japanese, enough for communicating but it wasn't very good). I'm guessing him being alone with the client nervous made him sound like that. He knows the vocabulary, and can reply at a conversation speed, but was probably nervous as maybe he could feel Subaru's opening remark through her eyes.
