Knopfler is a totally unique guitarist - you know its him in just a few notes. Smooth and elegant and effortlessly slinky. Great phrasing, tone, and musicality - he is always understated and classy while creating wonderful emotionality. He gives little glimpses of the ferocious speed he COULD play with, but always plays the right note at the right time. While he never really got the glory of a Clapton, Allman, or SRV, he is every bit their equal in his own way. Theres a reason hes always on THEIR best guitarists lists.
Probably the only guy who could share the stage with Clapton on the same level of precision , playing only the notes needed , Eric plays that way as well. I know there is some stuff they've done together and for good reason. Mark Knopfler being such a humble guy makes him all that much better.
LOL That made me laugh, as I saw Clapton back in '88 (with Phil Collins on drums!) and Knopfler came out and played a set with him. To ROARING applause. They played back and forth so well, set each other up, supported each other's leads... It was absolutely gorgeous and I remember it still 35 years later. Thanks for pulling up that old memory. Peace to you!

He's definitely the smoothest and soothing guitarist I ever heard. Love his style since I heard him on first album. Never get enough of his music. Always been very good
In my opinion, Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He may not be a technical wizard or play lightning fast, blistering solos, or create music which is nearly impossible to replicate and learn to play, all of which seems to be the criteria to be a "great guitarist" by most people's standards.. But Knopfler is an amazing songwriter and in general, he has a profound musical sense. He knows what to play, when to play it, and makes his guitar sing with such gentle elegance that it allows him to communicate so many emotions to his listeners with so few notes. Some of his guitar licks are so beautiful it makes me want to weep. It's a shame he is so underrated when it comes to most people's lists of the greatest guitarists.
The Hemingway of guitarists. Hemingway was a master of saying in ten words or less what others needed a hundred for. Knopfler is a genius of the well placed note... Letting it hang out in the open, sometimes surrounded even by silence. I do not play, but from a listener of many guitarists, he strikes me as among the best at "expression of feeling." Even listening to many of his old classics, I am in awe...
+Saba Qat - Well said. His style of playing, self taught, is absolutely unique, phrasing second to none. And, tm50210 is also spot on about well placed notes. @@gerryodonnell4554 That's not true, if you watch his face during his concerts, particularly the old one, you can see sometimes he concentrates so hard and closes his eyes, sometimes he sticks out his tongue - very funny!

He practised and practised non stop - learning one Chord then another. Considering he admits he had NO natural talent, his guitar playing is even more impressive !!!

The drummer and Knopfler were on a telepathic wave length there absolutely brilliant to watch Knopfler makes every note sing man his playing is so unique to him stunning guitarist.
I first came across Dire Straits in 1978 when I watched them on BBC 2 and was blown away by the virtuosity of the the lead guitar. They were not famous then and shortly afterwards were booked to play a small university venue in my home town. I managed to get tickets, took my then fiancée, and since then, attending a number of gigs, have lived my life to the music and songs of Mark Knopfler. The years have flown by, accompanied by his artistry. They have been good years.

Brilliant! Always drives me mad when they play Sultans of Swing on the radio and fade it out before the guitar solo. Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists of all time!
This version of the solo, which is the same as the Alchemy one, is hardly never played on any radio anywhere. So no matter much the the radio stations give you of this song, you will never hear this part.
Sultans of swing has one of the most lyrical solos I’ve ever heard. Knopfler’s clean tone is one of my favorites ever. David Gilmour is equally lyrical on many songs, especially Comfortably Numb, and his tone is also amazing.
it is impossible to pick the best guitar solo of all time. But I LOVE that Knopfler plays the Sultans solo a little different every time, and every time it is amazing. Certainly one of the best ever
MK is my all time hero. Not only is he a phenomenal guitarist but his songs delve into all walks of life. The Trawlerman, Private Investigations, Sultans of Swing, The slot machine man - 5.15am which tells of miner's strife in the North East. The Bar Owner, Delivery Men for Micro Wave Ovens, Whoop di do about a lost love and of course the infamous soldier song Brothers in Arms, not forgetting Shangri La and Local Hero. I have been a fan since 1979 and cannot understand why he doesn't get much air time on Virgin Radio and other stations.
@@kristinwebb177 well i agree to a point..but dire straits touring drummer( TERRY WILLIAMS) Back during the brother in arms tour totally blows away numerous drummers..even today's standard..But nice to see a younger generation making a success of their chance to display the correct approach and dynamics shown..EXCELLENTLY EXECUTED!!!!!
One of the most distinctive sounds. You always know when it's Mark Knopfler playing. I've loved Sultans' solo since it first came out. Hearing it always takes me back.
really appreciate his volume control. most guitar leads tend to ostentatiously take up as much sonic space as they can, but he has dynamic finesse. he's playing some really technically difficult fast shit (especially given that he's fingerpicking) and yet he isn't standing out from his band in a seemingly mutually exclusive way. you can tell that he's still part of something yet doing his own thing without going excessively loud or over-pedaled/processed. he's as much a musician's guitarist as he is a guitarist's guitarist. you know?
Nick Stephens I do play guitar and bass, and what he does is impossible! You are dead on it....he is not only the consummate guitarist, his sound management is perfect. Well said, my friend.
i come back to this quite frequently. Knopfler is just on another level. that playing, with his fingers, and little or no distortion is absolutely insane.
I'm 84 and have never played a guitar. After hearing Mark Knofler I now want to play one. Question have I left it too late. All I want to play is this tune. What chance is there of getting help from Mark? Stop dreaming and face reality. It aint going to happen wake up!
Some think that speed is the most important factor in guitar solos. In my opinion the soul and atmosphere it creates is far more important. Like Knopfler does it ;)
Only people who think soul and atmosphere is what's important in a guitar solo say that some think that speed is the most important. Really, very few people actually think so
You look at some guitarists and the parts that some people get excited about and it's just speed. Remember Yngwei Malmsteen? Blazingly fast. But he's a technician, not an artist. The true artists can play pretty fast. They just don't do it all the time. They know that they can speak with one note, one bend or a flurry of notes. If all you do is play a flurry of notes, it starts to become noise. You can admire the proficiency with which that speed is executed, how clean the notes are, etc, but it lacks the fell and ability to speak to you like true art. If you consider the guitarists that are widely revered as the greatest, all of them know when to hold back. Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Knopfler, Eric Johnson, all of them have moments in their work that are memorable for one wailing note, or a bend that takes on its own life. They know that ripping scale runs are dull by themselves.
Soaring! Mark Knoffler is one of those great guitar players with taste, technical excellence, and creativity. Each space you think is filled up by one note actually has about 3 grace notes wrapped inside. Amazing.
His music goes straight to my soul. I play the intro of Fade to Black over and over many times before I listen to it completely. His play brings emotion from me.
Dear God in Heaven, thank you for giving the world this man and all of his being! A TRUE GIANT, in the realm of music! I hope his life has been as good as the blood of life he brought to the field of music and audience's around the world, for what, forty-three years now! Bravo, to Mr. MK, always and forever! Thank you from all who have been in your presence!
Mark Knopfler.....one of the best guitar players of all time A unique spellbinding master. I have listened to him for almost 50 years, and I am amazed each and every time. He always makes it look so easy. He plays effortlessly. He is a genius.
Truly one of the greatest guitarist of all time. I listen to this solo of his he played in the Alchemy Sultan of Swings as well it just takes my soul to another dimension or world all alone, this is is beyond amazing
Underrated and a genius. And so cool. Every guitar note he plays is just north of tone. I cry every time I listen. Thank you from an old 80s kid - you made me happy all my life. Every time.
Not many guitarists can make you cry with joy like Mark does. He is simply, THE Greatest, forget the rest. The emotions he stirs up in a few simple chords is unreal, add to that his amazing storytelling in the lyrics of his songs and you have a master at work. Thank you for the music and the memories Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler.
Immense, saw Dire Straits in 1985 and in the early 90’s, love this guy. Plays a solo whilst looking like he’s thinking of what to have for dinner that evening - so cool.

Totally fell in love with Mark Knopfler when I heard the B side of Tunnel of Love... I don't think anyone can touch this man for style, skill, technique, story and melody. Not to mention energy and passion... absolutely the best guitarist ever, IMHO!

The drummer kept that whole solo going. That was awesome!
Like John Bonham with Page, this drummer knows and plays, in absolute sync, every note that Knopfler lays down. Masters of the trade.
Same in the alchemy version. The guitar is good but it's the way that every note on several of the riffs is backed with a tom strike that makes it.

@@jangrnkjrpedersen3214 yes and what a shame! The alchemy version of sultans should be the only one ever played anywhere. Absolutely amazing
Probably the same reason we'll Never hear Telegraph Road on the radio!
Totally at ease........... Always a standing ovation from me. Simply another level.
1986 came to Tasmania. Best concert I have ever been to.
He never thought that is gonna be the best ever solo , that is why is magic .!!! Magical.!!!!!!
He is one of very few , you know him with your eyes closed,!
100% agree with you.
Also Carlos Santana..
YEAH baby
If you know Cory Wong he also fits in this category, completely different style but you onow it when you hear it
Add B B King and John Lee Hooker, you also know who's playing within three notes.
I think in Knopfler's mind, the Guitar is playing Him. He makes it look as if he's only there to let the guitar sing its own song. Amazing!
Best comment I've ever heard about MK.
@@nick_czem_nick656 To paraphrase MK. " When the singing stops and the guitar still has something else to say "
@@paulknight3111 And that’s when the guitar takes you to another world of orgasm
He just put a whole human life with all its rollercoaster emotions in a guitar ............
One of the very best guitarists the world has ever seen a true master ..
Sultans of swing has one of the most lyrical solos I’ve ever heard. Knopfler’s clean tone is one of my favorites ever. David Gilmour is equally lyrical on many songs, especially Comfortably Numb, and his tone is also amazing.
I agree
My personal three fave guitar players - Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour, Steve Hackett.
100% aligned
Truly, "The Sultan of Swing".
it is impossible to pick the best guitar solo of all time.
I played this 4 times before realizing just how good the drummer is too.
The drummer MAKES it the mega hit it is! And drummers rarely get their due! :-D :)
Spot on!
Yes he is very good and thanks for pointing it out
Drummer off the chain 😎.
One of the most distinctive sounds. You always know when it's Mark Knopfler playing. I've loved Sultans' solo since it first came out. Hearing it always takes me back.
Mark Knopfler is one of the best, very humble and very underrated!
Bei seinen solos kommen mir immer die Tränen..schwer zu beschreiben..
Legende
really appreciate his volume control. most guitar leads tend to ostentatiously take up as much sonic space as they can, but he has dynamic finesse. he's playing some really technically difficult fast shit (especially given that he's fingerpicking) and yet he isn't standing out from his band in a seemingly mutually exclusive way. you can tell that he's still part of something yet doing his own thing without going excessively loud or over-pedaled/processed.
he's as much a musician's guitarist as he is a guitarist's guitarist. you know?
Nick Stephens Can't play the guitar ! What you posted - Couldn't have said better myself.
Murray Howell Highway Man - Johnny Cash Knopflers background guitar is hauntingly perfect to me.
Nick Stephens I do play guitar and bass, and what he does is impossible! You are dead on it....he is not only the consummate guitarist, his sound management is perfect. Well said, my friend.
Murray Howell
I didn't really see any 'really technically difficult' playing on this :/
i come back to this quite frequently. Knopfler is just on another level. that playing, with his fingers, and little or no distortion is absolutely insane.
WONDERFUL.....AND THE MAGIC DRUMMER GIVING NERVE TO THE INCREDIBLE MARK.
I'm 84 and have never played a guitar. After hearing Mark Knofler I now want to play one. Question have I left it too late. All I want to play is this tune. What chance is there of getting help from Mark? Stop dreaming and face reality. It aint going to happen wake up!
Guys with a thimble of his talent would have been jumping around all over the stage. He is just calm and smooth, a Sultan.
He definitely jumped around in his younger days but he’s a bit older in this video lol
He makes it look so easy, a true professional.
A shout out for the percussionist too- not easy to keep the pace going with such smooth and fast guitar play.
Fantastic moments listening to every bit of Sultans of Swing back in '78 master piece of all time.
Gentle, quiet, unassuming giant of a legend. Knows exactly what he is and no need to scream it out or cause a scene. Just a musician.
Some think that speed is the most important factor in guitar solos.
In my opinion the soul and atmosphere it creates is far more important. Like Knopfler does it ;)
Only people who think soul and atmosphere is what's important in a guitar solo say that some think that speed is the most important. Really, very few people actually think so
Yup, and tone
***** well said mr. Bigfoot...
They know that ripping scale runs are dull by themselves.
mnbme woao..i was impressed with your analysis of what great guitar playing ought to be like. And i agree with you 100 per cent with what you said.
I've always said it. This guy never got the recognition he deserves. He's in the same league as Clapton and many others.
Soaring! Mark Knoffler is one of those great guitar players with taste, technical excellence, and creativity. Each space you think is filled up by one note actually has about 3 grace notes wrapped inside. Amazing.
There are a small handful of guitarists who can bring a tear to my eye.
Mark is one of em.
Agreed wholeheartedly
His music goes straight to my soul. I play the intro of Fade to Black over and over many times before I listen to it completely. His play brings emotion from me.
A genius. He makes the guitar talk. I could listen to him all day.
Agreed, and his outros are in a class by themselves
I generally do.
just looks so effortless fantastic
What an exceptional gift and talent!
stunning, flabbergasting, foudroyant, knockdown, knocker, knockout, overwhelming, dazzling
LOL smart ass
:)))))
Omg this made me cry. I agree 1million %
Mark Knopfler.....one of the best guitar players of all time A unique spellbinding master. I have listened to him for almost 50 years, and I am amazed each and every time. He always makes it look so easy. He plays effortlessly. He is a genius.
What an amazing solo, keep watching years later and always amazed
It's a pleasure to hear this man playing the guitar.
Truly one of the greatest guitarist of all time. I listen to this solo of his he played in the Alchemy Sultan of Swings as well it just takes my soul to another dimension or world all alone, this is is beyond amazing
This gives me goosebumps!!!!!! So incredible!!!
Underrated and a genius. And so cool. Every guitar note he plays is just north of tone. I cry every time I listen. Thank you from an old 80s kid - you made me happy all my life. Every time.
Me too
And me to!
Mark enjoying it and doing those jumps near the end like he used to in his younger days ;-;
Isnt that so he can hit the strings sharper to get the correct sound?
I have to come back and re-watch this one a couple of times a year. Brilliant build.
I never get tired of rocking the hell out of it.. Lol! Is this your favorite song?
Surely one of Best version, the solo alone is worth the price of admission, the Greatest Master Class guitarist ever SR Mk 👏
It’s so so so so beautiful!!!! Unbelievable!!!!
Sultans of swing is a music gem. Even today I can't get over it.
Nieuwjaars filmpje
His guitar work on the title track “Brothers in Arms” is THE ultimate Knopfler solo.
The greatest lol there's no such thing you idiot
Watch this over and over and appreciate it every single time.
What a gift and what talent. He’s great!
There’s making things look easy and there’s Mark Knopfler playing the guitar.
A living legend.
Immense, saw Dire Straits in 1985 and in the early 90’s, love this guy. Plays a solo whilst looking like he’s thinking of what to have for dinner that evening - so cool.
What a great description! Love your work :-)
@@alexbrown1995 Thanks Alex!
Best use of “whilst” ever. Period.
Una rola fantástica y mágica para mi la verdad traé un recuerdo a mi mente y mi corazón de una persona que ya perdí pero que seguiré amando hasta la eternidad
Puts my mind at ease. Just beautiful.
if his guitar playing dosnt give you goose bumps then youre dead inside
Totally fell in love with Mark Knopfler when I heard the B side of Tunnel of Love... I don't think anyone can touch this man for style, skill, technique, story and melody. Not to mention energy and passion... absolutely the best guitarist ever, IMHO!
Hello Maria
Most people I talk to always have Mark Knopfler on the list of one of the greatest guitarists of all time. I don't ever hear people say he is underrated. He continues to amaze us with his music. Love this video.
being 21, barely any of my friends had heard of him or dire straits i’ve had to get them all into it
Interesting Fact - When asked about how he started playing he said he wasn't naturally gifted AT ALL. It would take him 3 months to learn one Chord. He practised and practised non stop - learning one Chord then another. Considering he admits he had NO natural talent, his guitar playing is even more impressive !!!
Absolutely an incredible orchestration
