Tom Fletcher passed away but left one of the best budget tables ever. The Nottingham Analogue Horizon. I'll never understand why it isn't mentioned more or promoted to budget enthusiasts.

In the early days of vinyl, most turntables did not have a tonearm. You could therefore buy the arm and cartridge separately and install it yourself. Today most turntables come with an arm and cartridge pre-installed. Most of the arms and cartridges are not of the same quality as the turntable. When i bought my Pro-Ject 6 Perspex magnetic suspension turntable, the first thing i did was to remove the arm and install a Hadcock GH 242 Uni-pivot tonearm and a cartridge of my choice.

I enjoyed this video as it showed some brands that I was not aware of. At the end of the day we all hear things differently so it’s important to find a good dealer who can demonstrate how these all sound different. After listening to many brands and owning several I came to the conclusion that the Linn LP12 was the best one for me and if my budget was tight I would search out a good used one.

How much do you think an old LP 12 majik with adikt cartridge and a Jelco Tonearm ?

@@tango_gru £2 to £2.5K for a good one from a dealer. I would stay away from private sales as they need to be set up properly.

The Thorens 1601 is an upgraded TD-150 not the TD-160 which was later done in a similar design by Linn.

Very true. "Vinyl is best" is a myth, and as for the misleading hype re the turntables, and hideously expensive poor performing MC cartridges - give me sixteen binary digits and a remote control every time.

If you think Technics turntables are among the best you need your ears look at. But of course if useless strobe lights turn you on or you fancy yourself a DJ then sure go for Technics.
