    Truly the golden age of super bikes. And another example of the symbiotic cultures of California USA and our Aussie counterparts.

    Keep the videos coming thanks for the memories I had the privilege to be at a bunch of those races during the 80 and 90.

    Moto GP is great but this era was relatable. Riding the bikes that were being flogged on the track. The best part was the drag races at the lights heading back into Sydney after the race.

    Loved the way the ABC could condense endurance races down to about two hours to make them watchable. Would start mid afternoon as a delayed telecast but finishing with live broadcast. Unfortunately it's an era of racing long passed and I don't think we will see the likes of again.

    Amazing how those aussies could turn an xs 1100 into - not only a racing bike - but a winning racing bike.

      The Yamaha XS 1100 was a shaft drive bike right? I don't remember.

      @@hudsonhawk0016Yes it was - but these bikes were converted to chain drive by the Aussies.

      @@DennisMerwood-xk8wp I had a few bikes from that area, all Hondas. My first road bike was a 1975 CB 750K then one of my two favorites was a 1978 CB 750F, CB 900F, 1986 VF 500 and finally a 1986 VFR 750. The CB 750F weighed between 537 and 550 pounds depending on who you talk to. In comparison the VFR weighed in at 436 pounds. I could carve up a road with the ol 750F but it got a little grumpy when pushed to the limit. The 750F and the VFR were my two favorite bikes out of the lot.

    The XS1100 seems to go great for a two valve engine. No substitute for displacement??? Love their excuse for poor mechanical work. Put in new pads and didn't adjust the pedal. Great interview with Ron's dad.

    These are unmodified stock bikes?

    • @markdignam3525
      @markdignam3525 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To a very large extent, yes.
      Everything has to be stock or easily available as an option (eg, there is sometimes a choice of wheel sizes) and the usual unnecessary parts (stands, lights, indicators, etc) are removed but it is a standard production race.

    • @hudsonhawk0016
      @hudsonhawk0016 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markdignam3525Thanks for the reply, I could see they were pushing the bikes limitations for sure. I fooled around as a novice with an 86 Honda VFR that was no where near what the pro riders with same bike had. I also had 1980 CB900F that I would never imagine racing like those guys did. Lol

      yes, they were incredibly brave to race street bikes with normal road tyres.
      I actually miss that type of race, as it featured bikes you could buy retail.
      I mainly rode Kawasakis - Z750, Z1000J, GPz1000, ZX-10 and ZX-10R over many years.
      I never did serious racing, just a bit of club racing and these bikes were a handful on smaller tracks.
      Had a few memorable two wheeled slides.
      I never owned a Honda - had one Suzuki (GT750 often called the Waterbottle) and a FJ1100 Yamaha.
      The Suzuki was two stroke and water cooled. I shake my head in disbelief that I managed to survive.......

      @@markdignam3525 I raced for two years until we were expecting a child. My wife thought it would be a good idea to quit so I did. I wasn't really competitive and buying the HRC goodies for that bike was expensive. I had some fun though.
