The cruelest thing the show has ever done to him was when he had the opportunity to get his original body back and Stan couldn’t be assed to help preserve his body leaving his body to decompose
What really sucks is that Klaus was never always a devious, Francine loving fish, if he had won the race he would've went on to do so much more, but instead he was kept inside a bowl, and basically was forced to care for his literal kidnappers, sure he has times where he's an ass, but that is all forgotten when you remember that he is just a man, a man who swims in his own feces!
Klaus frequently talks about his time as a human, and it's almost never something good lmao he talks about doing awful things to minors plus he's a raging anti semite
Unlike Meg or Zoidberg there have been many times where the Smiths are shown to actually care about Klaus. He is Stan's valet and it shown that these two share a bond. Also Jeff, often calls him Mr. Klaus. If not for Roger I think Klaus would have been well integrated into the family.
There's an episode where Klaus is shown to have a group of friends in Florida, they have like a junky apartment. He takes Roger with him and introduces him to his friends. I liked how it showed us Klaus has a life outside of the Smith family
Meg and zoidberg both have episodes showing they are appreciated. Dr farnsworth is zoidbergs best friend. You need to watch those other shows before you comment
Yea, Klaus can't be compared to Meg because even in his punchingbag episodes he gets very strong character moments and he's actually usually going toe-to-toe, and is often cast as a sympathetic character. For example, his denied manhood is a constant point made and rarely as a joke. For a Setup McFarlane show, it's surprisingly uncruel.
@@br3wski Ok but moments where Meg is shown to be appreciated - especially in current shit - is WAY less often then when it's shown they care about Klaus. Meg is usually just humiliated. Klaus - while still a punching bag - can throw back punches more often than not, and has character moments that can stick unlike in Family Guy. Maybe don't assume others haven't watched the show just because they disagree with you before you comment
While Klaus is a punching bag for the show, I do like those small moments where everyone's nice to him. Like, when Francine calls herself "The Beaver" as her spy name, Stan instantly stands up and goes "That's Klaus's spy name".
I feel like Klaus works much better than Meg as a punching bag, because we have been shown many ways he genuinely sucks. Every time he shares an opinion, it’s meant to be the worst possible thing and every occasion he gets to have even the smallest amount of power, he immediately abuses it.
Yeah, they've made jokes about him being antisemitic, shitty opinions, and shown multiple times in the ways he sucks ass. Plus, they've had a few times where Klaus was able to get his own revenge and reverse the punches. _(And I feel like everyone is made fun of a bit more equally, whereas in Family Guy, most of it goes to Meg while occasionally others get it)._ There are still moments where you obviously feel bad and wonder maybe if they should've toned it down a bit, but it's way more funnier and well-executed with Klaus. I think they've started to try to do this with Meg by turning her into a psychopath/crazy person with some of her later episodes, but that feels like it's the result of years of abuse, and doesn't hit the same. Meg turned into that, Klaus started as a dick
Another reason why Klaus is a better punching bag is because aside from him being a fish, the social dynamic between him and the rest of the family is that of an adult who somewhat got adopted by them. For lack of a better phrasing. But Meg is the biological child of Peter and Lois.
Honestly, I think that the first time they gave him a new body they could’ve had him knock out Stan, hunt down the people who ruined his life, and do to them what they did to him.
I doubt it, considering the finale - before the network bought another 2 seasons - was meant to be ambiguous on if the world ended or not and the Smith's died, Klaus included as a fish
It's pretty sad , in the episode where Klaus gets stans boday and stan gets Klaus' old body stan says "I understand now Klaus , you used to fly but now you're trapped swimming"
My favorite Klaus episode was when he threw out his back at hotel of a conference and had to repeatedly watch the hotel Infomercial with Rita Ruder tell her one joke over and over again 😅
With the fact that BOTH of Seth McFarlane's shows have a punching bag character that's part of the family. I feel like Seth absolutely HATES someone in his family and is using these as a way to let his frustrations out.
Well Matt Groening also includes punching bag characters in his shows, like Lydia mentioned there’s Zoidberg in Futurama and from the Simpsons Milhouse is definitely the punching bag in that show, it’s just a trope that people include in shows.

@@ShadowJCreed I though Hans Moleman was the punching bag.
Nah. Meg is the punching bag character because they were struggling with figuring out how to write her at the beginning. Originally she was just unpopular at school. In later seasons the whole world is out to get her and she is depressed. Klaus is bullied because he is a man in a fish's body.
You just explained why I love klaus personality he's that character that bites back alot instead of being a character like Meg to be persuaded to go back to her usual self and routine and not become the people that tormented her. klaus is more human like considering there are alot of people in the world who enjoys being petty or getting revenge they also abuse the power they hold and position so i'm glad he's not all that likable people don't like ugliness and that's what he's full of.
Dee Bradley Baker brings such a level of charisma to Klaus that he's probably my favorite character in American Dad, despite being the least-prominent member of the Smiths.
Klaus is one of my favorate characters in the whole show he is absolutely hilarious. I love that he is always the butt of the joke. I love when he attempts to act cool and fails.
I dont remember the episode in particular but ill always remember the small bit where Stan says that they have a real relationship while trying on ties but then say that the rest of the family cant know about it 😂 without him, it just wouldnt be the Smiths as we know them
Idk but I love Klaus probably because he does punch back. And his character is pretty versatile. At times he can be the straight man, a wannabe or a villain. He also shown to have a life outside the Smiths sense he has his Boys
Klaus is definitely a fascinating and creative character. It does suck that oftentimes he has been used as a joke but admittedly early on in the series he was kind of a douche. The honest truth is Klaus does not deserve what the Smith family does to him. He never got his body back which granted I know if he did get his body back That would be an extreme transformation in the series, but the fact is he did not get his body back and there was a chance he could have but the Smith family just didn't care. Or at least Stan just didn't care. Haley and Francine laughed saying that Stan deserved it when Klaus switched bodies with him
I find klaus pretty unlikeable, but also very entertaining in small doses. I feel like the writers on american dad really understand how to write a punching bag character without it getting Too extreme and hard to watch. It might be because hes in a fish body, or it might be because he’s a bit of a scummy adult, but it feels way less meanspitited than Meg in family guy, for example.
I think for me it’s in the character but more importantly the people around them. Klaus in his human form is a shitty person and in his fish form is a pretty shit as well and that’s excluding the Nazi stuff. Everyone else in the house is either kinda bad or good. Francine and Stan are alright and Steve and Hayley are pretty good overall with some flaws. Roger gets a pass because his stuff is so exaggerated that it’s hard to take it seriously which is the point of him. Meg on the other hand isn’t even the worst character in the house, in fact she’s probably the best one in the house. Chris isn’t bad but they make fun of Meg for being a “loser” when Chris is even worse in that regard. Stewie, Brian, Lois and Peter are all way worse people then Meg so it’s a lot easier to feel bad for her when the people around her are actively bad people. I’d say Stewie gets the same pass for being extremely exaggerated tho like Roger.

3:05 Put yourself in Klaus' shoes (or fins) and say you wouldn't harbor resentment/vengeance for the Smiths (especially Stan), one day you're an olympian, the next you're a fish just so you can't compete and embarass America.
I feel pretty bad for Klauss. But I remember thinking that what he did to that nun in the future was pretty messed up. And I agree on the idea that "getting bullied to keep the family together" is a horrible message.
Stan is the worst with him. He was literally going out of his way to make his life suck. The episode when he switched with the Car, this man was prepared to switch him with some item and leave him in the basement. Edit- even the episode with Rogu and Klaus at the rodeo, the entire family validated him as family while Stan worries about a friggin Donkey called tequila joe
I really like the love that Klaus has gotten i recent seasons with his backstory being expanded upon and his qualities being touched on like the episode where the touched on his favorite childhood tv show. I will admit Klaus needs a few more episodes for character development, also the rest of the family does need to lay off on him. In my opinion, Klaus needs to be in the protagonist role more often, it is alright to have him in an antagonistic role like in Beyond The Alcove: How I stopped worrying and learned to love Klaus but they need to show more of what makes him tick and why he continues to live on as a fish
The best episode for Klaus I think would have to be the one where we find out he has friends and they all respect him. It might even be more than one episode it happens in
it is impressive how much character they have given klaus lately. He feels like roger sometimes as he is able to go out and find jobs and dates but with his own spin on things.
I started with Family Guy in 1999 and remained a fan ever since and I'm still a fan. I'm a fan of everything Seth does. But American Dad is far superior. That being said, I don't think we give the Cleveland show enough credit for being hilarious. Yes, it was short-lived, but I really enjoyed those four seasons. Whatever Seth does from here is gravy.
what about the episode, with the framing device of a human klaus, in the future, telling the episode's story to his grand child. I thought this was a pretty sweet ending for him.
Klaus is my favorite. I always felt bad for him when he was mocked and sometimes didn't like Rodger becuase he was one of the main characters who abused him. There was one time however when Rodger defended Klaus and proved to everyone how caring Klaus is. It was the episode where Dr. Penguin (one of Rodgers personas) left to stay at his aunts (cause Rodger went to war) so there was no therapist. Klaus wanted to be a therapist but no one went to him for help which actually hurt me. The episode ends with Dr Penguin fixing the family and then revealing that all the advice he gave was Klaus'. W Rodger.
Im rewatching American Dad for the upteenth time bc its my comfort show and I always had a soft spot for Klaus. He's hilarious, however whenever he does have a chance to be human he wastes it alot. I do love the dynamic duo between him and Hayley however.
The episode where Roger and Klaus hook up is the only time i had to stop watching a TV because how gross and awkward it was Lol.. another great video Lydia.
It's really funny that Dee Bradley Baker has been on this show the whole time and we knew him from Avatar the last Airbender and Star Wars The Clone Wars. I remember watching American dad as a kid and being shocked that he voiced Klaus
Your voice is lovely and you definitely have a new subscriber! I love this show! Keep up the amazing work. I would love to learn more about American Dad if you have the time
Then again, Klaus IS pretty evil. If left to his own design, he can accomplish some very devious things. He once vowed revenge on Steve and Roger so severe, it turned them into complete, paranoid wrecks. And remember when he was surprised that Snot came back from Jewish Camp, and when Francine put that label on his fishbowl (to help Steve in a Spellathon) that said "antisemite" he responded "HEY! So that's how you spell it?" Oh, and he doesn't like to share because his favorite puppets (that he accidentally murdered) never taught him how? Seriously though, I love how the writers evolved the character to be somehow a trashy dudebro. I love how he has this weird Florida based crew, and they returned for a couple episodes, and he wants all these Pickle Ricks on his fishbowl. It's fun to see how much he gets treated like crap, but it's even more fun to see why he kind of deserves it. That's what makes it much funnier and much better than what they do to Meg. It doesn't feel so much like punching down as it does keeping him down so he doesn't do something evil or worse...make another hip hop video.
I always saw Klaus as the Master Shake of American Dad rather than it's Meg Griffin: The loveable jerk, with the overinflated ego, whose try-hard attitude is what makes him so disliked and always leads to his downfall. Yet those very same traits are what makes him weirdly endearing and so damn entertaining to watch. And in spite of those negative traits, he still has some redeeming qualities that allows us to root for him from time to time. But unlike Shake. Klaus's more positive traits surfaces more often. Which is why we feel sorry for him whenever he gets clowned by the rest of the family... But whenever Klaus's negative traits does show, we get to understand why the family treats him the way they do.
The Smiths going to the concert without Klaus was the worst thing they ever did to him in my opinion. Klaus bought the tickets, and that Koala is obnoxious.
What I like about the later seasons is that while they keep Klaus as the punching bag, they at least make him deserve it to a degree by making him more of an ass at times.
It's a cheap writing tactic. The same thing happened to Brian in FG, bleaching his past qualities in the process to gaslight the audience into thinking Brian was always terrible.
Klaus is literally the character who made me discover American dad. I think all the awful moments with the Smiths are justified. After all if the Smiths were nice to him maybe he would be a better person?
I do like how they have been validating him more in the newer seasons. You don't have boys, quit lying = he actually has boys. I would love an episode where many of his "lies" are proven to be true, even little lies like kicking a football over an arbys(burger King?) And then he does it with a tiny football(Klaus: I'm a goldfish it's not my fault you assumed a full size football 10 times my size) Episode could end with the family saying that "maybe he's always told the truth. Maybe Germans have always told the truth" as the family slowly looks toward the screen.😂 Fade to black
We have to also agree now everyone loves Klaus they even made an episode about Francine becoming jealous because of it. Later season Klaus gets the love he deserves
I've actually noticed that since the episode No Weddings And A Funeral, the relationship with the Smiths and Klaus has changed a lot. He has integrated offically into the family in a lot of ways. His alcove is considered his officially. He's still a douche but he's a douche whose a part of the family.
Allow me to impress upon you the severe mistake you have made. For years, my conduct has been largely benign. And yet, without provocation, you have severed our detante, and forced me to unleash upon you the vengeful flames of a thousand suns. You shall curse your mother's for the day of your birth! So go now, GO! And begin your life of fear, knowing that when you least expect it, the looming sword of Damocles will crash down upon you, cleaving you in twain! And as you gaze upon the smoking wreckage that was once your life, you will regret the day you crossed...the wrong FISH! Klaus's best moment by far
Actually he never had a chance at a new life Stan made it clear that after Klaus cooked breakfast Klaua was going to get forced back into a fish body. Besides his thirst for Francine is relatable with the audience, she triggers that Dexter's Mom and Peg Pete energy.
Im not the biggest Klaus fan but im glad hes got more to do lately even if he is mostly a lightning rod for the Smiths. The thing about Klaus being a punching bag is at least hes not an actual family member. He didn't deserve to be put in a fish, but at least the CIA was the reason behind it. Meg on the other hand is the Griffin's daughter. And that feels so much worse to me if shes the punching bag in their family. One more way i like American Dad over Family Guy i guess lol
4:32 gonna have to disagree based solely on the fact he bought them tickets without asking and wanted to get reimbursed (except the ticketmaster fee, he's gonna eat that) for something nobody wanted.
Also they really don’t care if Klaus actually dies In 1 episode they are partying together and Francine accidentally drinks Klaus from a hose and swallows him whole and they just cheered and partied on No one even cared that he was trapped in Francine’s stomach and would eventually either suffocate or digest inside her Shows what little care they have
I do think that any cruel joke in an animated sitcom is shameful to me and my home country in Canada at least Chilly Beach had it a little better because it takes place in Canada because as Canadians we don’t put targets on anyone no matter the reason.
10:16 Weddings and a funeral is better than Seahorse Seashell Party. That episode is dull because they are just stuck in the house the whole time. Meg calling out her family was played straight and there was no irony to it. In 3 Weddings and a Funeral, the whole episode was an over the top farce. It's like a dark version of Looney Tunes.
My two favorite Klaus episodes are the one when he hooked up with Roger and the one when he put his brain inside Stan's body and moved his to inside a fish.
The cruelest thing the show has ever done to him was when he had the opportunity to get his original body back and Stan couldn’t be assed to help preserve his body leaving his body to decompose

I love how unhinged klaus is he's one of my favourites.
0:07-0:08 SHUT UP MEG!
0:10-0:12 SHUT UP ZOIDBERG
0:15-0:17 SHUT UP KALUS
I love when Haley opens the med cabinet and Klaus says "wazap" menacingly
what about the episode, with the framing device of a human klaus, in the future, telling the episode's story to his grand child. I thought this was a pretty sweet ending for him.
Another great video Lydia!❤ thank you!😊
Klaus is my favorite. W Rodger.
Always felt bad for Klaus 😢
Im rewatching American Dad for the upteenth time bc its my comfort show and I always had a soft spot for Klaus. He's hilarious, however whenever he does have a chance to be human he wastes it alot. I do love the dynamic duo between him and Hayley however.
The episode where Roger and Klaus hook up is the only time i had to stop watching a TV because how gross and awkward it was Lol.. another great video Lydia.
He's not a pet, nor is he a family member. He is a prisoner!
It's really funny that Dee Bradley Baker has been on this show the whole time and we knew him from Avatar the last Airbender and Star Wars The Clone Wars. I remember watching American dad as a kid and being shocked that he voiced Klaus
I love Klaus purely out of my own love for goldfish and I just think hes funny lol
I fell sorry Klaus and don't think he deserves to be the punching bag
Your voice is lovely and you definitely have a new subscriber! I love this show! Keep up the amazing work. I would love to learn more about American Dad if you have the time
Fun fact: the pendant at 2:20 Klaus is wearing has a deeper meaning. The Ankh is a symbol of rebirth and reincarnation.
Hayley is always nice to him
Then again, Klaus IS pretty evil.
0:16 “Punt!”
(KICK)
Me: Man, that was hilarious, it never gets old!
Klaus is literally the character who made me discover American dad.
I think all the awful moments with the Smiths are justified. After all if the Smiths were nice to him maybe he would be a better person?
"Do you eat? I've got the money."
I do like how they have been validating him more in the newer seasons. You don't have boys, quit lying = he actually has boys. I would love an episode where many of his "lies" are proven to be true, even little lies like kicking a football over an arbys(burger King?) And then he does it with a tiny football(Klaus: I'm a goldfish it's not my fault you assumed a full size football 10 times my size)
Episode could end with the family saying that "maybe he's always told the truth. Maybe Germans have always told the truth" as the family slowly looks toward the screen.😂 Fade to black
We have to also agree now everyone loves Klaus they even made an episode about Francine becoming jealous because of it. Later season Klaus gets the love he deserves
Plus that Klaus track is really fire
Klaus's best moment by far
the latest episode with Klaus, Jeff & the Wraith was a good one. & Klaus actually gets to win in it.
Also they really don’t care if Klaus actually dies
In 1 episode they are partying together and Francine accidentally drinks Klaus from a hose and swallows him whole and they just cheered and partied on
No one even cared that he was trapped in Francine’s stomach and would eventually either suffocate or digest inside her
Shows what little care they have
Klaus I wish had more episodes in a human body
I do think that any cruel joke in an animated sitcom is shameful to me and my home country in Canada at least Chilly Beach had it a little better because it takes place in Canada because as Canadians we don’t put targets on anyone no matter the reason.
The "Lightning rod" theory in relationships, is really f*cked up.
Klaus is probably my favorite character in the show. That episode with him as a rapper is my favorite ep... nutri grain bars and some mountain dew....
Zoidberg, Meg and Klaus deserved better 😢
At least he’s no longer Reddit’s least favorite character
My two favorite Klaus episodes are the one when he hooked up with Roger and the one when he put his brain inside Stan's body and moved his to inside a fish.
Yet somehow they the smiths still treat their pet fish better than the griffins treat their daughter/sister
My fav character of the show (especially when he ask for a haircut)
Nutra-grain bar and a mountain dew!!
Bill is King of the hills punching bag, Moe is The Simpsons punching bag, and Jerry is Rick and Mortys punching bag.
They would have taken him to the concert but you never wake a sleeping fish
Klaus has a good relationship with his many "boys" though so he's got some stuff going for him outside the family group.
Seth really made a fish into a character, what's next? Multicellular bacteria? 💀
I have a fan fiction of Klaus and Meg becoming friends and comforting each other
“Razor” was unreal😂
