This "tribute" is nothing but a feeble attempt to IGNORE the blatant fact, amongst others, that he was the BIGGEST COWARD IN THE U. S. A. DURING EORLD WAR II! "He NEVER faced a real bullet in his whole life" was an ACCURATE QUOTATION from the much renouned and respected TV program "Blue Bloods" spoken by actress Amy Carlson, to Donny Whalberg, who played Danny Reagan, as his on-screen wife at one of the many dinner scenes.
During World War II celebrities from all walks of life, sports, actors, politicians, etc., who joined the millions of ordinary men and women of "the greatest generation" who put their personal lives on hold to volunteer to serve in the military! NOT JOHN WAYNE! NOT ONLY DID WAYNE REFUSE TO BE DRAFTED, HE REFUSED TO BE DRAFTED THREE TIMES! He ALSO REFUSED TO EVEN SHOW UP for his Selective Service draft physical examination. Even Conscientious Objectors during ALL WARS THROUGHOUT AMERICAN HISTORY were NOT FORCED against their religious beliefs to fight/kill. In John Wayne's case, THIS WAS NOT A RELIGION BASED CONCERN! HE WAS JUST A FLAMING COWARD! Even his director, John Ford, AT 64 YEARS OLD, volunteered to join the U. S. Navy - even paying for his own uniform! Actors i. e. Clark Gable who were over the age for service in the military, VOLUNTEERED TO SERVE! After the war, Wayne was shunned by all Hollywood. Nobody wanted to associate with him as he was known to be a COWARD. Only John Ford would work with him! However, Ford NEVER LET WAYNE FORGET that he disrespected him. He would publicly announce, "get that COWARD on his mark, now, to shoot this movie, or he can find another line of work as far as I am concerned".
The FBI had orders to arrest ANY AND ALL DRAFT DODGERS, who were tried in Court, and sentenced to 10 years hard labor at either the Fort Leavenworth Disciplinary Barracks at Leavenworth, KS, or the Portsmouth Naval Prison, at Portsmouth, ME. The ONLY REASON that this did NOT happen to Wayne was that the U. S. Government Office of Public Relations, in an effort to maintain and improve morale on the Homefront and amongst those in combat, did NOT want the notoriety, as John Wayne, even as a B grade actor, was perceved by the public, through Hollywood propaganda, as an all American hero.
Wayne's COWARDICE slowly and finally became apparent by America during the Vietnam war. Wayne was completely out of step with public opinion by supporting America's involvement in sn unjust war, amide nationwide protests, as Wayne was a narcissist all his life. He starred in the government sponsored propoganda movie "The Green Berets" which was "cornball"! Even his co-star, David Jannsen, had issues with Wayne during the movie! For those of us who were drafted (myself 12/7/69 out of college when the II-S student deferments were eliminated by President Nixon) and did NOT want to go to war, but did NOT RESIST, did NOT REFUSE TO SERVE, NOR DID WE FLEE TO Canada, John Wayne was/and will always be a DISGRACE!
I will acknowledge that certain movies he made i. e. "The Cowboys" and "The Shootist" in his later years, were ones that I liked; but ALL his earlier movies up to and including "The Green Berets" and "Brannigan" show an overweight, out of shape, blowhard, jerk!
