    Finally someone who explains how the racket should be held and what the angle of your knuckles should be with every grip. Also the zoom in on every grip makes this the best tennis grips video I have seen so far! Thank you!

    Thank you for including the angle of the knuckles...No one else ever does that. For a "general" explanation this was more informative than the majority of other grip explanation videos on youtube. Along with your myth busted videos, this video contains no pseudo-scientific terms or concepts that just about every other tennis channel falls for.

    I took some clinics with this moron who just kept saying "Put your knuckle here, put your knuckle there, yada yada yada," and I couldn't get it until he literally moved my hand, but your tutorial was GREAT. I LOVE how you used the octagon shape and numbers and described the knuckle to bevel relationship. Very well done and THANK YOU.

    Thanks. This by far the best and simple demonstration of the grips. As am commenting, I searched and fell on this video, with some strange pain at side of my right wrist, and not the joint itself. I switched to balls number 1 for beginners with my son and after sometime the pain developed.

      Hi Ian, I'm not sure how to thank you enough honestly. I just got back from tennis practice and woowwww the changes I made from watching this video changed my life!!! I tried the eastern grip for the first time and my serves are firmer and way more consistent, there's way less shock felt in my elbow, and ground strokes also are consistently lower. I had been using a pseudo-continental with my index finger parallel to the handle, doing it wrong for so long. I don't want to bore you with the whole story (i'll put it on the ET site :) ) but thanks a lotttt!!! I'm going to go through all of your Amazing Videos, keep up the GREAT work Sir!!! p.s. wow i didn't know u had a podcast - SUBSCRIBED!!, fb & twitter - DONE! I'M A HUGE FAN NOW !!! :)

      In short- yes. You simply cannot hit a good backhand with a forehand grip, unless you play with a continental grip.

    Well when you say you can't really drive with a western grip but seeing that I use a western grip and kinda extreme but not so much I can drive perfectly fine and with that extra topspin is a deadly weapon in my arsenal.

    *TFW your coach tries to teach you grips, and you never paid attention, now years later you realize their importance*
    I only do continental... for serves, power serves, slice serves, everything. The exception is when I cut the ball, which I do eastern/continental because I try to either put as much top spin or skip on the ball as I can, to either drive it into the person or away... Time to practice eastern :/ (my forehands are fine, but I'm going to see the effects of eastern grip in driving my forehands while maintaining my top spin, as my top spin has always been a little lacking in forehand land)

  • @kamilmorningstar
    @kamilmorningstar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great video! I'm using eastern forehand grip and I just recently noticed that my thumb isn't embracing the handle, it's kind of laying on the bevel 1 parallel to the edge of the racket. Is it a technical flaw that may impact my forehand? I wonder if it's something I should work on.

    Great Grip explanation Ian. I always send the link to this Vid to my students who are trying to learn the various grips. Send me the Invoice at the end of the month :D I give students 'Homework' of sitting on the couch watching TV and be able to cycle through the various grips with thier racquet by feel rather than looking at the handle. Any other ideas about drills/training to get a student familiar with the grips and especially changing between grips automatically to suit the incoming ball?

    • @EssentialTennis

      I personally try to stay away from changing grips with my students, Mads. It has to be a really, really extreme way of holding the racquet and/or be leading to some other really serious problem for me to go there. Changing a grip after years of playing is really, really tough.
