Tying The Boogie Man with Kelly Galloup

- Since we introduced the Boogie Man in the Spring of 2010 it has been wreaking havoc on big fish all across the country. This fly is similar to a Heifer Groomer, but Kelly added a wool head, lead eyes, and cactus chenille to make this fly come alive in the water. This is just one of those patterns that you got to have in the rotation.

I’ve learned (after many mistakes) to be very careful when tying in the “cover” after the articulation wire/bead. All too often, I would get my connection dialed just perfect, finish the fly, and have no movement in the tail. When I was tying in my “cover”, I was crowding the connection(my mistake) and taking out any of the good slack that would give a bit of movement in the tail. I hope my mistake can help someone else out. Thanks again for these stellar instructionals!
First. I don't tie his flies, but I do like to watch these videos because I always learn something about the flies that I do tie and the fish that I am trying to catch. Kelly, could you please do some flies for us warm water anglers, please?
By warm water, do you mean saltwater or freshwater? I use his flies (zoo cougar is a killer bass streamer in a size 2) for bass and have caught bass over 8 pounds. Also work great on redfish.
you should try this fly in your warm water fishery, you might be surprised
His streamers are fantastic for warm water. I live in georgia so I have trout an hour away and bass in my backyard. Bass inhale Galloup streamers
Thank you for sharing so generously your years and years of knowledge and experience. What I would like to ask for, would be , to see all these streamers, on a retrieve in clear water, to have a reference, to know if my 'attempts' are swimming and tracking correctly. I've been tying all the Galloup streamers this winter, for my late March trip to the White, My Belly Bumper Bunkers seem to swim well, my CH Barely Legals swim like hunting fish, but my Zoo Cougars seem to swim kinda flat and dead-ish. An idea for this summer's filming perhaps. Thanks again! #moredogcameosplease

oh yeahhh! Been waiting for this video. Just packed a big cone, got a beer and parking up for an hour. Is it me or does audio sound bad? Could easily be me... On a serious note guys this was the first big fly I watched swim and I thought it was insane in the river. I love the olive in real clear water. Yellow in the filth.. Cheers from NZ.

I have a beginner dry fly question and I know you have done a bunch of " what hooks to use " this is kinda that question but in a different sense . When I first started tying a few years ago I would tie dry flies pertinent to where I live which is central new york. So I would tie sz.10 to sz. 14 March browns, b.w.o.'s , elk hairs , ect. The problem was they would never really float. As I've watched your videos and many others I've learned to use a lighter wire hook than I was using helping tremendously. I figured if you had mentioned this it may help beginners not make this same mistake. Thanks so much Mr. Galloup and tight lines

I always use floatant on my dries. Helps keep them buoyant.

Nice , the flank feathers give these flies a very realistic look . The wool that you use for the head is great stuff and easy to work with . March 3rd -17 in Ennis today what's it like at your place ? So you think April on the new hooks from MFC ?

A white boogieman is all i need ,no other colors no other streamers.I can outfish kelly most days but maybe not on the madison
I love the videos, and I've seen just about all of them. My only wish is that you would get them wet. You always say you should see them wet, and I guarantee mine don't look like yours when do when wet. It would help me to continue my learning.
With your triple articulated boggies do you still put flanks in all 3 hooks or only two? Thanks
Derek, yes I put a flank on each hook so three flanks
Question for you, Sir. If you wrap the hackle and wire in the same direction does the wire ever capture the hackle? I thought the wire was there to reinforce the hackle so the fly held up... assuming I catch something.
Jamal, you are correct sir, if you wrap the same direction nothing really gets secured, that is why I go in opposite directions, the hackle is going from front to back and then you go from back to front and catch the feather every turn. Thanks, Kelly
Funny. I never tie white. Where I fish, green, black, and brown work. Coming to Banff, grey it is.
Can you substitute the mallard flank with anything? Feathers that size are next to impossible to find
David, you can sub other Duck flank but they too are hard to come by. You can layer two shorter feathers to make it look like one and get the same results. The first one will have exposed stem and the second covers the stem of the first one and you pretty much get the same look. KG

Can u join the hooks using stripped copper wire (from electric use) ? Can't get these stainless nowadays
Gaston, no it would not last very long especially in the gauge it would take to go thru the eye. You can use any bite wire for pike fishing. Thanks, KG

What about lazor dub for the head
A lot of people have used laser dub for the head on Boogie Men. The only thing that changes in the presentation is the drop you get from the weight of the wool.
Can you use a down eye hook for the rear hook on articulated patterns? I would think this would impede the action, but some commercially tied streamers appear to have a down eye hook.
GN, the OG Circus Peanut used a down eye and fished like a champ, but I have never used one on my flies, I think they move better with a ring eye. I have a new series of hooks coming out that the ring eye is vertical instead of flat horizontal, which will make attachment much easier yet. thanks for watching, Kelly
Thanks for the quick response. I just started tying articulated mini dungeons after watching the videos and didn’t want to tie a time intensive fly on a hook that wouldn’t allow it to perform. I’ll have to check out the new hooks; sounds like a long shank version of the inline hooks used to replace trebles on lures.

If you actually watched the video you would see that it was much more than just tying a fly. Lots of little tricks and tips that would work for just about any fly. Anyways, I personally enjoyed the full hour of this video.

@@brockwilson3446 I didn't mean to offend anyone but I learned how to tie a bunch of flies quick and go fishing. Maybe I was just in the wrong mood to watch an hour long video on tying a fly.
His video takes an hour because he is sharing a lot of info ( which is awesome). I’m sure he can tie this fly in 15 minutes or less
