I don't think this video is meant to be taken literally, I think his wife is already dead. But just because someone is dead that doesn't mean they disappear from our minds or hearts. The husband seeks the comfort and company of "someone like you and all you know and how you speak", the companionship he had with his wife when she was alive. But, even though she wouldn't hate him for doing it and she would understand (as shown by her stroking his head in the car), he still feels like he's cheated on her by going into the brothel and destroying the sanctity of their marriage. Afterwards, his action opens the floodgates (the metaphorical flooding of his home and distruction of their things and the possessions that remain that he cares about - his stamp collection) of his emotions. The coffee cups at the end show that his wife was really no longer physically there (her coffee hadn't been touched) but was metaphorically still with him (he made two coffees even though she is dead). An excellent and heartbreaking video about grief, loss, love and loneliness. And a stunning rendition of the song as always by scala.
That couldn’t have been said/written better. What u wrote was absolutely beautiful & a perfect way to describe this video. I listen to this when I’m depressed missing my fiancé that passed away so suddenly. Scala really did this song beautifully (they always do). But anyways, I just wanted to tell u that I love what u wrote & feel no one could write what this video describes any better.👌🏼😊
Perfectly nailed! I loved the soft religious feel of this song so much, after hearing it in a homeless video I looked it up, the video is sad and moving at the same time, beautiful art!
I went to Iraq in 2008 while I was in the Marine Corps. Some of the things I saw, heard and felt were unimaginable. Returning home after 10 months in hell was the hardest thing I've done. I could've used somebody but I didn't know it at the time. A beautiful take on my favorite songs.
i remember my beloved grandma. she was suffering from chronic kidney disease during her last months, and during that time i was praying that God would take her out of her suffering already...I prepared my heart and mind for the day that God will take her from us; but when that faithful day came last July, it still hurt like hell.... :(
I'm 33 today, I've known you for... at least 15 years. That's the only music I can feel going through my spine, giving me shivers, again and again from the first to the last note. You are really special to me. Thank you for existing.
Wow what a powerful video. I truly felt she was trying to get him to truly see she could use somebody but he was just so overwhelmed with her illness that he didn't truly notice her. At the end the showing of the clock was like their time is running out and I do agree with the other person who said the rain represented her tears! This was awesome!
The video interpetation of this song by the Scala & Kolacny Brothers is just spectacular. It should be an image the enire world should see that we need to all come together for those in need, not just shelter, food & clothes, but simple companionsip.
As a Marine who too has been to far away lands for far too long, I feel your pain Marine. I did too many tours and too many nights spent away from loved ones. This song does reach deeply into our hearts, sung in such a melancholy way as to evoke a deeper feeling of despair and longing. I do wish it showed a happier ending, however, I believe I understand the meaning of the video coupled with the song. Good luck Marine, I hope everything has become better since you left Iraq.
The woman is dead/in a coma, the man can't let go of her, even though he's trying to move on. That's why he's trying the brothel. But in the end you can see it doesn't satisfy him at all and he still misses his true love. This video proves his love for her. And she loves him too, even though she can't reach him anymore. A very tragic story indeed, but this clearly illustrates their love for each other.
She is dying/dead. He can't take the fact that his one true love is dying/dead. He is trying to move on. He went to a brothel but in the end, he just ended up feeling more empty. He misses her. He even made 2 cups of coffee--one for him & one for her. But as we know, she probably won't recover... It's beautiful yet so sad...
JV Waters your so right cheating on any level is wrong. No good ever comes from it. And like me your racked with guilt for the rest of your life. It's not worth it.
For the first time ever, i am crying to a video, and i literally mean it. This reminds me so much of my mom when she passed away in the hospital 2 years ago.... and this video just makes me shed so much tears.....
It’s so hard not to cry when I listen to this. It makes me think of all the ones I loved that died from overdoses over the 26 yrs of my heroin addiction. Tomorrow is the 3 yr anniversary of my 3rd & last fiancé’s death & I’ve been a mess all week. 😔
You know what, whenever I need a good fucking cry it's this followed by brother from Kodaline. Not ashamed to admit it but a 6'3" man is allowed a day to cry every now and then and these songs get the old pipe drains going like a charm.
English not your first language? Yeah, using the wrong adjective can sometimes lead to mistakes. Instead of "saddest", the word you meant was "dumbest". Because this vid basically says that because SHE can't get it on with hubby on account of her slowly dying, she lets him get it on with prostitute. Only a 20yo would find that reasoned behaviour. She is the LOVE of his life! And Life DOES NOT consist entirely of happiness and continual sex. Marriage is not one long bunga-bunga party. It's joy and heart-pounding thrills, yes, but it is also enduring TOGETHER through painful times, through the seemingly unendurable sadness, and multiple threats of ultimate loss. HOW -- tell me how -- his not being able to stick his wick into her candle is the most important thing in his life that he has to betray her feelings -- that's what her tears and the rain are about, not matter what anyone says -- for brief sexual satisfaction?! They both have life, and they should enjoy each other while they can. There's just so much more to life, to marriage, to love, than just sex. The ONLY way this video make sense, is that she is supposed to be the ghost of his now-deceased wife, or that he was driving her to the Euthanasia clinic. inb4 h8 replies; inb4 "OP can't inb4" PS; Hamburger's suggested Revolverheld clip gets what I mean.
Do you realize, that this i a piec of art? It is fictional, and by saying that he found it sad, he does not endorse anyones behaviour in the video. Why do you get so fighty and aggressive about a musicvideo, which, in my opinion, is very well made and original?
ara9ond: You're so close to truth...when you add the recognition of our innate brokenness and a hefty dose of compassion to your worldview, you'll have it.
I think you're right. At the end there's two cups of tea, one on his side and one near her. His tea is almost completely gone and hers is full. When my grandfather died my grandmother still made coffee every morning even though she drinks tea. Then she would poor him a cup and set it on his side of the table, along with the newspaper he liked reading. It would stay there all day until she tossed the untouched, full cup of coffee out before bed. I hated coming over and seeing it, :'(.
i love the rain at the end.. my friend told me he thought the rain symbolized all of the tears cried by that couple and thousands of others just like them... he is drenched in pain about losing his one true love and he is trying to move on but remembers his pain... my friend and i think this is what the last scene means... like if you agree
I think that this is a beautiful interpretation. My interpretation would be, however, that this video is so beautifully simple. It is just raw emotion from a difficult scenario. It's such a real situation that people usually tend to shy away from in fiction or art because it doesn't have a clear, happy ending. It's reality. For me, she is still alive.
@maisieohhh I had the same thoughts as you. At first I thought she was dying, but then it clicked she'd already died. Lilies are common funeral flowers as they're symbolic of death. With the stamps, I think maybe she collected them, or it was something they did together. Because with the scene when the rooms flooding, the stamp drifting away (along with the cleansing water) just seems like he's moving on. So, so beautiful.

I couldn't stand and cry a little. Wonderful. Now i have to subscribe :)
I love both this and the original. Its a bit unfair to say one is better than the other since they are different genres of music; they'd naturally be different.
The video befits this song so sad but it's what we have to endure as humans, and emotions are part of life. And its the love for that person that carries on even after their death until we are back with them in the next life we can be happy again.
After a serious head-on with a drunk driver & serious injuries, I spent the better part of the last decade in my room with medical devices, meds, machines & my body no longer how it once was, longing for human touch & warmth - hiding in shame from those I knew - not wanting them to see me that way, but finding some of them broken of spirit - worse. Multiple surgeries & tremendous effort later, I'm almost back to who I once was. I know what it's like to be her - to be broken & "untouchable".
I think the part where he goes into the brothel or whatever it is, maybe that symbolizes how temptation never goes away and it can further push people apart.
USE SOMEBODY I've been roaming around, always looking down and all I see Painted faces fill the places I can't reach You know that I could use somebody You know that I could use somebody Someone like you and all you know and how you speak Countless lovers undercover of the street You know that I could use somebody You know that I could use somebody Someone like you Off in the night while you live it up, I'm off to sleep Waging wars to shake the poet and the beat I hope it's gonna make you notice I hope it's gonna make you notice Someone like me Someone like me Someone like me, somebody Go and let it out Someone like you, somebody Someone like you, somebody Someone like you, somebody I've been roaming around, always looking down and all I see
@PleaseDieQuietly Exactly! And the time is stopped, which represents death. I thought the stamps represented communication so when they were getting washed away by the rain it meant was like their communication was ruined (Since she's dead). But I'm not sure! I like your theory! AHH I just love this video so much. I wrote a paper on it!
Not sure what you mean. Just been hearing this song on the radio a lot. I've been looking down on what I see. Having a newfound view on everyone and everything around me. Scary.
What makes it the point is that you can read the lyric now and feel what it's about. Most songs that are good have a dark beginning and actually mean something. What is disturbing is you see an individual interpretation to it that makes us feel bad. It wasn't written for this individual awful event but it does fit just as well.On the point it is a slowed down cover version as is the video. They are/were a fantastic choir.
This song itself for me is a ghost my nan passed away 18th may, i was a pall bearer and the thoughts that were going through my body as i placed the coffin down, my last thought was that was the closest id ever be to her again, that thought still haunts me to this day but this song also brings back good memories R.I.P peg

This is my favorite choir in the world singing one of my favorite songs, in the background of an amazing video.... What more could you want?

This video touches the essence of humanity. In the deepest and rawest sense, people can connect to the meaning.
I've been looking for this rendition forever, and here it is!
Beautiful, and thank you.
i just cried. so many spouses with people in comas just screw around to try and fulfill the emptiness left by their other's unprecedented absence.
I'm choked, how music and video can leave your heart stunned is unreal

Man, what a story! The director is a poet, if you ask me.
I love the 2nd altos on this song. They bring depth to the sopranos. Incredible.
Yeah...this made me cry very hard. Such a powerful video. Thank you for creating and sharing.
i just sat with my mouth open throughout this song i was glued to the screen, dont think ive ever heard a greater version to this song than this one!
