So wish I could have you for my coach! I don't live in California anymore and there is no one like you here in Oklahoma City! You are so good at what you do! 👍🏼
Beautiful job, Sylvia! Thank you for your demo ride! Although it's wonderful to have the image of Amelia riding as a target for my own riding, it's also nice to see someone working through challenges of inconsistent rhythm, etc. and to see what Amelia suggests. The idea of getting organized and asking again (vs. increasing the 'volume' of your aids) makes a lot of sense.
I’ve been concentrating on doing ground work with my horse so I haven’t ridden in awhile, but I will definitely be using this when we ride. He can get super tense and spooky, or more zippy the more we work, just like Mercurio. Love these lessons with Sylvia.
Sylvia did a *brilliant* job staying relaxed and keeping contact. Inspiration and goals!! I really enjoyed and learned from this video, it's so helpful to hear your guidance and watch a (clearly talented and experienced) student learning and thinking. Thank you and Sylvia (and Mercurio, what a beautiful and clearly talented horse)!
Lovely lesson here Amelia! Great ongoing tuition & encouragement! Fabulous job Sylvia! You looked beautiful on Mercurio, really well suited! Impressed & envious! I would love to have a real life lesson on Mercurio, with you Amelia! Thankyou for sharing! 🐎❤️🙏
thanks so much for this video! i’ve got a trial on a potential loan on a mare that’s hot and sensitive, very excited to see her and this video has been amazing for a bit more help ❤️
This was like watching/listening to my last lesson on Delilah, she is JUST like Mercurio, except green, haha- (I work at a sales/training barn and my lease pony passed away suddenly, so I am probably riding stuff above my level out of current necessity...😮) We even did the Snowman the other day, I love it as an exercise, I even used it when I rode on my own! It was uncanny, you said verbatim things my instructor also said several times, I am going to study this!
This was very helpful to me. I've got a new horse and I do think he's sensitive. I'm also at the beginning stages of learning Dressage and he's more advanced.
My mare isn't hot as in having a lot of energy in general, but after years as a show jumper, she expects after a warmup to start galloping around and win ribbons. I've been leasing her 2 months and I'm getting used to her. She's a lot like Mercurio after cantering! She doesn't want to go back to a slower gait after, so we're doing a lot of walking after the canter, or at least staying at what you called a "boring" trot (great description!). This was helpful. Thanks!
I thought Sylvia did so well! And you are amazing, Amelia. I love how gentle yet clear you are with your students! Two questions (second question is two-part): 1) What do you mean when you say "Don't chase him [Mercurio]"? 2) What level rider is Sylvia and is Mercurio a Grand Prix horse? Thank you for your videos!
Thank you for your kind words. To answer your questions: 1) when I say don't 'chase' I mean don't nag and push him onto the forehand without organizing his front half 2) Mercurio is schooling 4th, with piaffe and passage work as well. He's very talented. Today, Sylvia and him are working at about 1st level.
This is a wonderful topic...so helpful and clear like all your videos! :-) Amelia, when you say "supple and soft" do you mean to use a suppling movement and then alternate that with softening? I watched your suppling video (scrambling eggs) and it worked great with my mare who is wonderful and loves to work, but tends to get tense as we go along. Thank you again for all your great work!
Yes, that is correct! You will supple your horse and then soften your hand (stop suppling, think of your joints breathing out) as your release. Scrambled eggs does wonders! :)
Would you mind sharing what the green markers in the arena are and where they could be purchased? They look like they would be helpful for really getting the geometry correct.
Riding the outside to turn the horse - yes. But what if he's reactive/very tense to using my inside leg to keep him from falling in?. thank you Amelia :)
for a reactive/tense horse, you want to focus on bending and suppling, but you want to think about BOTH sides of having inside leg to outside rein/side of the horse to create that proper balance
I have a similar horse to Mercurio. I've just started cantering again battling PTSD post bucking accidents so I want my aids to be super clear if I can. Exactly when do you give the half halt before cantering....during the inside leg aid, during outside leg aid? What is the correct order?
What can I do for my pony who is excellent until I get on the CL then he becomes hotter than hades I’ve managed to improve and contain the explosions until it’s time to canter - what can I do better in preparation for the canter trans - I don’t have this issue anywhere else except at competitions so of course our test quickly goes out the door 😢
It sounds like he has some stress associated with showing and CL, I would teach him lots of bending and suppling exercises on the ground and at home in a calm environment, then go to schooling shows and just school in the environment and in the test arenas rather than focusing on a test. This will help you both build your confidence in those environments.
Not for this level of work. Sometimes he gets a little deep, but Sylvia is just learning and it's all about little bits of the bigger picture. Working on her position and balance for both of them in turns and movements will help with developing a better connection over time. :)

Like your softness in your voice during the training. And how you support her efforts. ❤

Love watching these lessons they are so helpful!!!
The Snowman is a super effective exercise for me - I MUST prepare for the bend changes and for the canter.
It's one of my favourites!

I wish I was there for lessons! 🐴

They are soccer cones! I got them off Amazon. Yes, they are great for practicing geometry!
Awesome!!!

Amelia your student has a very good body posture- ut she looks down, as do you.. When you look down you are halfway to the ground.

You are right! Looking up is so important!

Isn't his poll too low?
