I have a B.A. in Spanish that i got in 1993. The key to learning how to speak Spanish is to make sure you never worry about what you have said being "right" or "wrong" just keep speaking and you will never regret it!
Getting mistaken for someone who lives in the country of your target language is such a thrill! When I was in Egypt speaking Arabic, many people thought that I was living/working in Cairo (as a foreigner). In fact, my first time in the Middle East as this short 3-week trip. I was glowing! :-D I even had someone approach me for directions, which I couldn't help out with, but that was a nice ego boost too.
You’re the best Nate. I took Spanish in high school but never took it seriously. Over the pandemic I was actually able to get conversationally fluent and I your channel was a big help in that journey. Really appreciate what you do and sigue así!
The mindset shift from “winning” a language to “never stopping a language” (it’s an infinite game, after all!) helped me to really enjoy the day to day cultivation of my español. ¡Gracias por este video!
Like anything else, learning Spanish is the most difficult and frustrating in the beginning. But if you push through for long enough to have a simple foundation of vocabulary and understanding of the how the grammar works, like maybe intermediate level, it becomes very fun and enjoyable. Studying isn’t usually the fun part, but it’s all well worth it when you get to start using what you know with real people.
Gringo here. I’ve been working on my Spanish for almost 7 years. I love the language and Latin American culture.
I understood the first part of the question at 6:02. Nate you said “Si tú hubieras nacido en un país de hablas hispana como te redes de español. Como podrías hacer eso desde tu casa. When you said “hispana” I thought it was spelled like this “espana” like the country “España” lol. But I realized it was “hispana”. But my responds is, like you’ve taught us “consume a lot of music, and speak to ourselves.”
Great video with some of the greatest language learning advice I have heard in the last 40 years!! I learned German as a young soldier in the 80s when I was in posted Germany, and learned it fluently without even thinking much about it. It just happened as they say to the point where native speakers would often asked me if I am from around Munich area. Fast forward 40 years and I applied the same concepts and principles when I started learning Spanish a few years ago, but with the Internet it's a game changer. Like you said ego is everything. Now days I speak Spanish every day all day with my Colombian wife and I'm continually asking questions. We never stop learning! Suerte a todos ;))
💯 Everything you are saying is the same principles I use for myself, as well I tell EVERYONE this! You must speak, Study and listen everyday! ¡Dale Compa Nate!
¡Hecho!
Best way is to watch TH-cam videos of topics you are interested and comment them. As native spanish speaker who wants to learn english I agree ego can hold you back.
I'm about to travel to Mexico for the first time to meet my Wife's extended family, and I'm nervous because I know very little Spanish. I've tried learning in the past, but I think due to my Traumatic Brain Injury from my deployment in 2010-2011 it makes it more difficult for me to retain things. Hopefully being in Mexico for a week and a couple days will help me a little bit more.
Hoy aprendi algo nuevo contigo Nate, muchas gracias. Like you've said, we always learn something new, even in our own mother's tongue. Surprisingly though, some of us claim to speak 20 languages. Vampires maybe? 300+ years old?
My issue is that I am generally a quiet individual, preferring not to talk excessively. As I have been learning Spanish through music, TH-cam pranks on the street, and the app Busuu, it has not been very helpful for me. Although my listening comprehension has significantly improved, it doesn't assist me when I want to express myself, as I often lack the appropriate words, experiencing something like temporary amnesia in those moments. Moreover, not speaking much makes it challenging for me to engage in conversations, as I've noticed that Spanish speakers tend to be quite talkative, and one must sometimes interrupt them to contribute one's own thoughts; this is based on my personal experience so far.
If you had been born in a Spanish-speaking country, how would you surround yourself with Spanish? How could you do that from home?

In my experience native Spanish speakers are not that kind to stop everything they are doing to help you speak Spanish. My experience is that they tell you English speak English, or just continue responding in English when you are speaking Spanish.
I tell them to humor me and keep speaking Spanish . They can answer in English if they must. Best practice is at the laundromat. Listening to the gossip and asking questions of others.
There’s some subtly to your Spanish question that I don’t understand. Obviously I’d be familiar with Spanish if I am from a Spanish speaking country hypothetically. EXPLÍCAME NATE
No offence, but there is no way someone would truly mistake you for being Mexican, they were just being nice. Your gringo accent is obvious from miles away. But you can still speak well even with an accent, it's not important at all.
Thanks so much for watching, I put a lot of love into this one!
