This Jazz Piano Tutorial is on Jazz Comping Rhythms.
Comping means ‘accompanying’ or ‘complementing’ a soloist by playing the chords. This involves playing the chords in a quasi-random manner, in order to insert some rhythmic variation into the harmony. This can be quite difficult at first, because you need to build up your hand independence.
In this video I discuss some widely used Jazz Comping Rhythms that you can use to practice comping. First learn the rhythms by themselves, then try comping for yourself with your left hand and playing the melody or improvising with your right hand. Try this with each of the comping rhythms shown in this video, and then combine them to create new longer rhythms.

Perfect! This is exactly what I was looking for! Once I get the patterns I can then add it to the voicings. Far out, so much to learn!

Was a percussionist in my younger years and now back to learning the piano. This is a great approach to rythm I think and thank you for putting it out there for us.

This is a very clear explanation. From a classical piano training I've never fully understood the jazz rhythms to use with melodies. Thanks.

This was incredible! I've taken the material from this video and made it into an exercise which I practice EVERY DAY and it has helped tremendously. What I did was I'd randomly select two of the rhythms you've listed and for each cycle (1 cycle = 1 whole note or 4 quarter notes), I'd play a chord from my chord progression iiim7-vim7-iim7-V7-IMaj7-IV7-viim7b5. And I use the metronome. So, if the pattern was: (1)(1+)(2+)(3+), I'd play each chord based on the pattern. Then, at the next cycle, I'd move on to the next chord in my chord progression and play that chord based on the pattern. I'd first play the chords to get the fingering right and then, I'd turn on the metronome (60) where each beep is a quarter note. Not only does this allow me to reprogram myself to jazz rhythm but I'm also learning this chord progression. It was stressful at first but after a couple of days, it became almost second nature. As for the chords themselves, it's up to you on the voicings but at first, I've been playing 4-note root position. So, 1-3-5-7. But you could do rootless. I think what I'll end up doing is going through all my voicings around this chord progression based on the rhythm pattern so that I'll learn all these different voicings. It's now root position 1-3-5-7, but next time it might be 3-13-7-9. Endless possibilities.

Oh, also, I don't play just ONE of your listed rhythms because I found that to be too easy. Adding two randomly selected rhythms from your list made it more valuable and useful. By the way, I just use a D&D 20+-sided dice to randomly select the two rhythms. I've numbered each listed rhythm from 1-20 and I just roll the dice twice for the selection.

This chord progression is not something I made up. I think it's called the Diatonic Circle chord progression.

It’s not “physics” or any of that BS it’s uncanny and unnatural all right it’s cell phones, and what’s working through cell towers, electricity , etc. and the demonic algorithms. Sounds nuts I know I thought so too until I learned up. What’s you discover our technology came from satanic worship. Yes real rituals done to Satan, whoever you like to him then our technology boomed.
Look up Jack Parsons who created what is now called NASA. He was a disciple of Aleister Crowley who worshipped Satan, was a mason and created his own “religion”. This is fact btw not speculation.
Jack parsons look that up it will spark something in you maybe. Hopefully. Things aren’t what they appear to be at all. Why would the guy who created nasa be worshipping Satan and doing rituals if he’s trying to explore space

I want to pass something on. Yesterday I learned some new licks and patterns using my Casio
CTK4200. They sound extremely jazzy. I tried them in a Grand Piano
and was disappointed. The sound of the grand did not give the sound
I wanted. It was just basically a Cmin to F and back , then just playing Blues notes. The grand..I think has to much built in sustain.
So now I practice on two different instruments..synthesized and natural. Just passing this phenomenon on. Thanks for the like. The best. Pianostyle100.

You can also use polymetric patterns (3/4 or 5/4 over 4/4 gives nice syncopation)

Thank you for this great video. I am practicing playing a simple quarter note walking bass on the left hand while applying this comping rhythms with the chords on the right hand to the tune Fly me to the moon. Since i use passing notes on the bass,(I mean non-chord tones) on beats 2 and 4, I feel that the chords clash with those notes when I do the comping patterns on the right hand on those beats. How can I solve this problem. Do you have a video on that topic?

Great lesson. However, I was hoping that you would touch a bit on comping in a group where there are others playing rhythm. Should the comping patterns among the rhythm players complement each other, be identical, or should one play little to no comping while someone else is comping.. Thanks.

  •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hello, great video. Just one small question, if the melody is done by a saxo let’s say. Does it means that you will only comping with your left hand and playing some rhytms melody? What will do your right hand ? Thank you in advance.

  • @PIANOSTYLE100

Very good. I play many of these rhythms. But naturally and mostly not thinking about singing in timing. Good points. On the piano, with a band or a backing track like I realpro (I use the guitar trio setting), I try different rhythms. I also find always playing a static place in the measure is boring. However what's boring to an experienced player may be exciting to a novice. I just learned Donna Lee measure by measure.
I don't like my comping on it so I used IrealPro pro on it. How would you comp on that one?

    A little confused
When the 'comped' chord is on beat 1 can you play a crochet or a quaver.
Also are beats of a bar crotchets so there are 4 crotchets in a bar. If so were do the and beats come in if there is no space for them as it would be taken up by the 4 beats/crotchets in a bar

  • @JadSleimanComedy
    @JadSleimanComedy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I wonder what if the chord change in a bar is written on say the 3and, but the rhythm you're practicing is the eight note on 1 and 2and for example? Do you just change early or not hit that change in the bass at all?
