Thanks for the great comments Nathan! I do have so many trees….. Mabel is my constant bonsai companion. She comes over and insists I take regular breaks and give her the attention!! 🤣. But I figured out how to prune and film with her on my lap - you can probably hear her breathing actually quite often. And for sure, lots of pruning coming up I just have to get busy here!! 🙏❤️🌲
Thanks for the tour, I enjoyed it. Very interesting about the akadama working well for your ports.Amen about the your ruthless thought at the end. That of course resonated with me. I have yet to regret moving on from a tree that just wasn't bringing me joy. That really goes for all material possessions too - I don't miss the majority of stuff that I've gotten rid of.
I enjoyed your recent video of 2025 goals - all great points! I believe that Dave sort of brought us together with a similar sentiment. I’ve been tempted to apply Marie Kondo’s method to clearing out the herd by moving things on that do not ‘spark joy’ in my soul. It’s a thought……
the final non-succulent is a schefflera which is not a ficus. They do however grow quite similar and require similar care. Love your channel btw, i saw the package of cuttings you got me is in very close. I doubt they survived the extended shipping time but you never know
Aha - you are most certainly correct! I knew that I should just stick to succulents! 🤣. My daughter gave this to me when she headed off to college. It grew about 3 feet tall before I decided to cut it back. Glad the cuttings are almost there - wow that has been a very long time. We can always try again when warmer weather hits - I’ll send an entire plant which may have better chances. Best of luck!! 🤞 and thanks for the kind words on the channel!!! ❤️☕️❤️🌲
Haha - thanks Dave!! Too many by far I think. I will trim back this year if at all possible (get it? 🤣), but it’s a difficult goal for us - too many possibilities.
🤣 That’s probably my all time favorite show - I think I’ve watched it 3 or 4 times already and enjoy it every time. I gotta say it’s the only series where I actually cried at the end - so so good!! And yes, there are certainly a parallel, not only with rocks and minerals, but possibly also with bonsai!!! 🤣 If you’re not in the club, it’s not possible to understand I suppose. Thanks for the fantastic comment. ❤️☕️❤️🌲
Thank you so much. I really like to set up as well. It makes taking care of them quite easy. I will eventually do a video where I show watering and how I do all that since lots of folks have asked about it. 🙏❤️☕️❤️🌲
What a nice variety of trees you have. Wow, the plants really do enjoy those grow lights. I recognize some that you just recently pruned and they are growing like weeds. I like your Bonsai apprentice, she's really cute (Mabel). Thanks for sharing.
Haha - thanks!! Mable follows me around all day as my constant companion. I joke that I should have named her shadow!! 🤣 The lights have really worked out well - they keep the plants growing well. I was surprised when I first started using them how often I need to water and how well they work. I think the key is that they are quite close to the trees. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for the shout-out Tom....i borrowed the theme from Bonsai Northwest, who said that he's.." focusing on the tree's that bring me joy". My 2025 resolution is - No more impulse or rescue purchases of tree's or pots. My 2025 goal is definitely reducing the number of tree's. No more growing cuttings just because I pruned a tree... Essentially quality versus quantity is the theme.
You’re most welcome, Dave! I love his channel as well. I never miss it. Let’s see how we do on our goals this year! Maybe we can form an accountability group! Sending cuttings out has helped me a lot actually because I feel like I’m not just throwing them away. Thanks for the great comment and idea Dave! 🙏❤️🌲
I love it - we don’t all admit it, but keeping things alive is the most important bonsai skill by far. It will come. Most of my early mistakes was doing too much as once which, luckily, is very difficult to do with succulents. Best of luck with your goals!!! 🙏❤️🌲
Great question! I use a mostly inorganic mix with around 20% pine bark. I do need to water a fair amount however, so using more of a cactus or succulent mix is better if you don’t want to water them as often. They are fairly forgiving soil wise - the only issue to avoid is a soil that stays too wet or soggy which will lead to root rot. 🙏❤️🌲
Wow that’s a forest of beautiful trees, do you leave the lights on 24/7 I have my first grow light arriving tomorrow and I don’t know how long to leave them on for the best results
They need 6-8 hours so you could also start there and adjust. I started with 12 and it has worked well so I have not changed it. An option that I have also considered is setting it to “follow the sun” in my area so the light would match the season outdoors. Which, for me now would be roughly 8-9 hours.
@@CoffeeandBonsaiwithTom I think I’ll do 12 hours like you to start with, I’d like to see the same results with my plants as you get. I’ve got a couple heat mats as well to help convince the plants it’s springtime, thanks for your advice
It’s 2 parts akadama, 1 part black lava, 1 part pumice all smaller particles for smaller shohin trees. For larger trees it also works, but larger particles and equal parts of akadama, lava, pumice. I get it on .99 Cent Bonsai on Facebook. Thanks for the great question Dave and I look forward to your next episode!! I’ve been thinking about your PS greenhouse idea because it rarely gets below freezing here. I think it would work quite well. 🙏❤️🌲❤️☕️
@@CoffeeandBonsaiwithTom its interesting, I used Akadama fines for recent PA cuttings and they are not performing nearly as good as my regular method of just recycled bonsai soil (sm-md) APL.
@DavesBonsai It could also be my environment. With my non-akadama soil my shohin established plants typically need watering every 1-2 days. With the akadama, they can go an additional day or 2.
I’ll keep this in mind! 🤣 What usually happens is that I don’t want to ship them in the winter when I have lots of time because it’s too cold. Then spring comes around and I put everything outside where I have tons of room and I basically forget about it until fall!! 🤣. And of course, the cycle continues….. 🙏❤️🌲

Eventually, you get too many tree's and the hobby is less enjoyable.
