It’s sad because this is truly about life and pursuit of happiness, not about ideology. Every political ideology should have protecting children in their agendas.
The amount of virtue signaling from the senators. They are equally as guilty when they can pass laws that allow for easier prosecution of online criminals. They are projecting all the blame on the companies instead of working with them
I'm frustrated as well. I felt the senators were on a stage in front of parents and victims and were putting on quite a show. Bullying at times. I'm a teacher and parent and I'm for the children. We conduct Socrator Seminar in the classroom and we emphasize dialogue vs debate in understanding and awareness of issues. Very minimal dialogue occurred here and not much was accomplished here except for more awareness as a parent for me of the dangers of social media for my 12, 11, and 5 year old. I'm ultimately responsible as a parent because not much will be resolved here anytime soon. Prayers and thoughts for all the families and victims.
@@anneloving8405It’s typically because they live quite luxurious lives. You’d be shocked with what simple fillers and Botox can accomplish (one example is a nose job without the surgery).
In this situation, both the senators and the social media platforms are ACUTELY aware of the dangers of their platforms. How do you have dialog with someone who sat in that very chair 5 years ago, proclaiming the same thing he says today? Why does it take whistleblowers for us to find out the planned targeting and damage that is being done to our children? There is no need for debate. It needs to stop and unfortunately, the only way it will stop imo is when the consumer walks away from it. Period.
It's crazy how I despise these big tech corporations and their leaders... but the senators managed to made them look like the good guys. Like that interview with the TikTok CEO alone, I ABHOR TikTok, but the senators were so childish and puny, they made the CEO look like a boss.
The fact that a senator keeps on asking ‘who did you fire’… As if that’s the solution to all. This is the reason why workers fear accountability and proceed to lying. It prevents workers and workplaces from self learning and self criticism. Nothing is going to change as it is not 1 person being responsible for what’s happening within large organisations/companies like these. This line of questioning shows exactly how simple minded, and superficial the thought processes of the senator were. How do all of these representatives land on those seats??!!! Where is the critical thinking and ability to assess the validity of information???
What got me was how he conflated not firing anyone (or at least not telling the world that someone was fired) with 'doing nothing' as though the solution to the problem would be resolved with a single person losing their job. Ok, so someone was fired, what then? Because following his (incredibly tenuous) logic, once a person was fired over it, the thing that needed to be done had been done. A bizarre thought process to my mind, that refuses entirely to acknowledge that however simple the problem is, the solution is inevitably going to be complex, multifaceted, and necessarily collaborative
Its a corruption issue. It went over your head. WHen they ask who did you fire, its because they know the top heads are all in cahoots. They arent talking about desk workers like you both seem to imply. These would be ranking board members that get disciplined. You guys need to spebd more time learning these nuances or keep self harming with false diagnosis
Its intresting to me because if one of those senators where in any of the CEOs jobs for a month, they would be voted to be retired of duty... They lack such an understanding of how these social media platforms work, yet have the gaw to criticize them. Its really as simple as the following: If someone doesn't comprehend how a product works, they should not be allowed to make laws over it. If someone doesn't comprehend how a product works, they should not be in charge of making decisions for it. If someone doesn't comprehend how a product works, they should not be using it. If the information on how a product works isn't public, then that product shouldn't be in the public.
Probably only has one team of programmers working on the latest software update to help with fixing the problem. But if you go off her point of view, you're supposed to fire them for not working fast enough on the problem. Not to mention that they're probably the only programmers that have any idea on how to go about it. We already know that that type of content doesn't do anything but cause problems for the platform. The CEO"s would love nothing better than finding a way to remove anything negative from their platforms.
You need a new senate. It's hard to answer if you cut people off from answering. Even riling people up ? It sounds like politicians using their position to climb up the ladder.
@nightwingaven69 false, they keep cutting him off because their emotions are getting the best of them in the moment. You can't know that an answer is BS if you don't give the person a chance to even give the answer.

You're kidding right? This is like the 6th or more hearing on this crap. These CEO's get up there and act like it's a pitch meeting over and over. Personally, I think parents should educate themselves on these apps and be parents. However, these CEO's are here for the theatre. 🤔
Nothing Zuckerberg has to say would even appease any parent that has lost their child due to online bullying. When my daughter was 8 years old a local 12 year old girl committed suicide because of online bullying. Maddie would have been 20 years old today and having a beautiful life. Maddie was the kind of girl that was sweet, accepting of everyone, helpful, loving. She was a gorgeous girl inside and out. Because of the cruelty of other 12 year olds who would mentally torture Maddie daily at school, while riding the bus and then would tell her to kill herself through the social media and posting unflattering pictures and videos of her. She’s gone and the other 12 year olds cruel little girls go on to live to be 20 and most likely not even accepting their fault in this horrific situation. Maddie’s loss was everyone’s loss.
@@jagilo967712 year old girls have been bullying other girls long before social media. I was one of those who was bullied around that age. It took me decades to overcome it, and some of the emotional scars are still there. Zuckerberg is not responsible for the action of all 12 year old mean girls everywhere. He IS responsible for the ways in which his platform has amplified and worsened the problem, especially to the degree that he has fomented division and strife in a quest for more profit. He interfered in our election in 2016 by screwing with the algorithms around what got shown to whom (I don’t have links to hand, but this has been demonstrated.) He is not innocent of wrongdoing. And at the same time, Spidey is correct that the way these hearings went down - based on the clips he showed us today - *was not helpful* in resolving the problem. It’s quite possible that Zuckerberg is correct that they are the “industry leader” in dealing with these issues, and that their efforts simply aren’t enough … because the problem isn’t limited to online fora and algorithms. The problem is BULLYING and we need to address it in person in schools and homes and at very young ages. In fact I might even contend that the senator at the end who was refusing to let him even answer her questions was demonstrating that very bullying tactic herself! We aren’t going to make progress until and unless we as humans learn how to empathize and express empathy to each other OFF social media as well as on. What happened to the 12 year old you mentioned is tragic. It shouldn’t have happened. And I can understand parents choosing to try to keep kids off social media as a result. (It’s not going to work completely - when have teens ever listened to their parents 100% and not done stupid things to get around them? - but we can try.) But blaming Zuckerberg for the behaviors of all 12 year old girls everywhere isn’t accurate and it isn’t helpful. I don’t have all the answers to the problems (obviously), but I think they begin at home and in schools with trying to teach our children - and adults - about compassion and kindness. Kids need to understand the CONSEQUENCES of their cruel words and actions, because they often do not know. For the bullies, this is just fun and games and a way to make themselves feel superior. They need to understand how to deal with their OWN feelings of inadequacy and find other ways to “have fun” that aren’t at others’ expense. Zuckerberg (and others) can and should work on improving their algorithms to deal with these issues better. Ultimately though, it’s not about the algorithms and it never was. It’s about a failure of humanity to be humane to one another. No algorithm can fix that. Only we can.
The senate missed some really good opportunities to dive into how to actually solve the issue. Their grandstanding to families that have lost loved ones to online abuse cost them any real chance of improving industry standards. Senators so focused on pointing fingers and gaining rage-filled sound bites for their constituents.
Do you think many of the senators know that some of us can see right through their intended virtue signaling and showponying and will try and change their approach or continue with their rhetoric because most other people here oi noticed were impulsively echoing what the senators were saying ie something must be done to ix. i then asked a few people here when asking well how would you like to resolve it then no answer whatsoever. Most people are robots so unfortunately the senators will continue to showpony because most people aren't awake like you and me.
No, didn’t miss that at all. I was commenting on the efficacy of their questioning not whether they were justified in any frustration they may have felt. Senators who kept cool and asked well-researched, specific questions got better answers and made Zuckerberg much less confident in his replies than the finger pointing, grandstanding crowd.
True. Many of these questions were "got ya"s and attacks on the ceos, rather than specific demands to make changes in the algorythms. Circus, but no bread.
This was very hard for me to watch. They wouldn’t let him even answer, even if the answer was going to be total BS. I hate it when everyone is talking all over each other. He has a duty to make it safe, but parents also have a duty to monitor their children. Thanks Spidey, even though I cringed through most of it!!
I didn’t see this one specifically but in most committees hearings the congressman have a specific time. Seen so where they run out of time due to the one being questioned not answering the question. Yes it’s infuriating because we expect a question and answer exchange but committee hearings aren’t structured as such. I had a broken tv that got stuck on c-span. I think it’s about making a point rather than anything else.
Senators we’re grand standing and just there to look like they care. Wouldn’t even let them speak to answer anything. Pretty much shows how nothing gets done in Washington. Great video Spidey!
Wow. Just wow. That 43 minutes went by in a blink. I hope you're going to do more from this hearing. Warning: political comment coming: high praise for Senator Tillis! He broke away from the usual Republican method of attack. He appeared sincere in wanting to work cooperatively with social media to protect the future leaders of the world, children.
Tillis is my Senator from North Carolina. Even though I vote Democrat, even if I disagree with Tillis most of the time, he appears to be reasonable. He is not outrageously ignorant like Cruz, Hawley, and some others. I occasionally agree with his positions.
@@MichaelBuieFilmsits so refreshing to read someone say something like this. It’s so rare nowadays to see someone who can see good in things they generally dislike or bad in things they like. We need more sound minded people like you. I couldn’t care less in this context what Tillis’ political opinions are, as a human being, he had the right attitude here.
As an (I guess Republican could be used to describe me but I don't really like being known as that cause I try to stay out of politics as much as possible) extremely conservative dude Seriously!! Again, I try not to watch any kind of politics and don't even vote but occasionally I'll see someone who's points I agree with but they're so angry and dominating about it that I don't like them. Like I get that they (and I) think the other person is wrong but are you really gonna convince them of that by yelling and using insults?? It has been my experience (in my limited intake of information and admittedly biased view) that liberals take this approach even more often than conservatives, so I would appreciate it not being referred to as "the usual Republican method of attack" (I'm not even proposing to call it the usual liberal method, I just think it's a stupid method) but I couldn't agree more with your overall point
“Two people, Monologuing at the same time”. What a great phrase. I’m stealing that one. I see or actually hear this often. In politics, it’s happening a lot.
It's by design. These people are there because it's a televised show and they get 50 million eyeballs for free. Senators don't want to talk to Zuckeeberg. Zuckerberg doesn't want to talk to senators. Both parties want to talk at the people on the other side of the TV screen. You and me. And so yea, they just monologue over each other. This happens at all senate hearings since the 60s or 70s. People should have gotten used to it by now.
So important these days to educate and inform people on the deviances that drive big business and media. No child should be on social media. It's scary to think that parents are willingly allowing their children on platforms like this. Parenting has become lazy and diluted these days. If you don't raise them, the internet will.
That's what I got from watching the video too. You're asking these companies to monitor millions of children with a few thousand staff, but parent can try to do their part too watching over a few children. And yes. If the kids wanna find loopholes, they will. But at least everyone did their part as best they could

Asking someone a question, then interrupting their answer with your version of what you think they'll answer is a sure fire way of infuriating everyone and getting nothing accomplished
The Senators who focused on attacking, instead of resolution, should be embarrassed by their own behavior. If this hearing is any indication of what it’s like when laws are passed in this land, I weap for us, as American citizens. BTW: Thank you for another great analysis, Behavioral Arts.
My struggle with these interrogations is that you can't actually hear a real conversation. I get that people are angry, but it doesn't answer questions that actually matter. "Who did you fire?"?? That's not even an effective question. It's a double bind. That's not the point. It would be better to ask, "what are you doing to change this?"/"what have you done in response?"
It's almost infuriating to watch. How are they accomplishing ANYTHING like this???!! It's very eye opening and disheartening watching the way these senators are behaving, in my opinion.
I agree 💯 Spidey! Seemed most of the senators were more interested in grandstanding for the cameras than getting real answers. Missed opportunity…such a shame.
9 times out of 10 it’s unfortunately to protect the video and the creator. It gets flagged. Like we’re talking about in this. Video lol sometimes you can get away with it but other times they take the damn video down. It’s crazy lol
They call it a hearing but really it’s an excuse to give a public tongue lashing w no goal of improving the situation. “Asking a question” is just time to stand on their soap box w no attempt to listen to an answer
Back in the early days of the interwebs, we called this JAQing Off. (rhymes with tracking off). JAQ stands for Just Asking Questions. It's essentially verbal m4sturb4tion.
Always!! Also where are the parents responsibility for monitoring their child’s activities. Don’t get me wrong my heart breaks for them and the wounded and the loss of life for some but we as parents also need to be aware of our children’s behavior and monitor social media etc.
The senators weren’t at all interested in any real answer nor were they interested in understanding anything. I think MS couldn’t really give an honest answer here because the algorithm doesn’t show anything you’re not interested in, or that you haven’t clicked on, so is hard to give an answer with all those parents that want to blame social media, but where is their responsibility as parents. I know many 10yo and older kids in my son’s school that have IG public profiles and those profiles weren’t made by the parents with the real age or anything like that, so how are any security measures supposed to work?
I never in a million years thought I would be rooting for Zuckerberg, but the Senator (while 100% in the right) made it an emotion-based clownshow. You can savagely destroy someone in a deposition without brining an ounce of emotion or feeling into the equation. An icy, measured delivery of blunt facts would have been much more inpressive.
One of the problems is that the AI they are using is still flawed. The AI doesn't make judgements that humans could make but it's probably not economically feasible for the companies to employ the number of humans they would need to do that. Early versions of AI were blocking all the organizations that counsel victims because the AI was triggered by certain words and phrases. I would have liked to have heard the Senators ask some questions about training the AI but a lot of the "questions" were more or less just rants.
Here, we see the evidence of the dumbing down of a society. The senators are supposed to be examples of respect and decorum. If we can't/aren't holding them accountable, how dare they expect to hold anyone accountable. In a word, disgraceful.

First, I'd like to say thank you for your posted content. It's always informative and eye-opening. Secondly. Your comments about how negative the Senate's questions are and how counterproductive the whole format is. I, as many others, have already stated, totally agree with you on the manner of the how and/or why they feel that they don't need to give time to actually answer their questions. Finally. In this episode, you have shown the difference in a dialog that is truly fact-finding and/or trying to be diplomatic and solving an existing problem by using thought and words. As opposed to what the example of "Bullying" that the Senate members have chosen to use in their line of questioning. If I was trying to teach teenagers the difference between Bullying and debate, this would be a near perfect example. As always, thank you for your content, my friend. Take care of yourself.

I had to go take a look at Senator Blackburn's web page because the way she was acting like a Mom accusing a child of doing something made me wonder if she was up for reelection soon. I'm not familiar with her, so to me listening to her not listen she just sounded like someone who was more concerned with getting her talking points across than someone who wanted to actually work on a solution. Great video Mr Spidey, very informative and well presented. Also, sorry about going off topic, it was just something that really stood out to me.
We call her the opioid queen here in Tennessee. She is owned by the pharmaceutical industry dealing with opioid and the addiction it causes. She could very well be sitting at the table with the social media ceo's but it's a different subject but just as bad. It's hard to look in the mirror when something terrible happens to your child, but it starts in the home, parenting or lack there of.
Blackburn IS up for re-election and all her behaviour was nothing but grand-standing for votes. She never shuts up and it's obvious what her agenda is. She's despicable.. and it shows to anyone who cares to pay attention. As a Tennesseean, she will NEVER get my vote.

I agree all Mark's products (Facebook, Instagram etc.) actually aggravated societal problems. I get too many Instagram scammers' messages every single day, including romance scams. These products are just too eager to make money itself and let scammers make money. It's a shame this world's leading tech company is so much morally insensitive. I don't think our future will remember him as a role model. He will be remembered just as a morally failed entrepreneur.
I am sorry these parents lost their children. No parent should have to endure this pain. But does publicly shaming Zuckerberg, and demanding an apology in front of cameras change anything in these people's lives? No. Does it elevate the bully mentality of Halley and Cruz? Yup. There are better ways to get positive results and change.
Excellent breakdown. As for whose fault it is that people are harmed on social media …. Everyone’s fault. As parents, many of us have to do more. Should the platforms have some responsibility? Yes. As a parent, personally I feel the majority of the responsibility is on me. But that’s just me. I wish the senator would have let him talk more. I wish as Spidey said, that emotions were left out… and more time was spent working together for solutions.
I agree 100%!!!The parents themselves should pay attention to what their children are watching. They are part of the problems, why does a 7 year old have a phone or Instagram? There are apps to monitor what their kids do, I get it kids are exposed to a lot especially from their peers. However they should be JUST as responsible for what their kids are doing/watching on their phones.
It is more on parents but bc parents don’t parent social media gets blamed. Since they allow kids on platforms they need to make sure it is kid safe and it isn’t. Also on politicians bc what have they done to stop this too. But if parents were doing their job it wouldn’t even be a thing. But as long as kids aren’t in many parents hair they don’t care what they are doing
Aweome analysis as usual Spidey! The senators should take a class with you, or at least watch your videos. Then they can learn when to shovel on (cut in) or when to sit back and let the person bury themselves (listen).
Thanks so much and you definitely got this right. It’s not even only about letting them talk for answers, but let them talk to show the world they don’t have any as well sometimes.
Thank you for mentioning the difference in body language when it comes to people with autism in the beginning. Lots of people with autism continuously show body language that indicates lying as their bass line, including me. And it makes it quite hard to be taken seriously and to come across as reliable. Could you please do a video about autism and body language? I would love it if people became more aware about neuro divergent body language, and maybe get some awareness for ourselves as well 😊

@@HeatherEss Firstly, did you not listen to this?! People are being PROMPTED to view without searching. Did you not hear about how people were creating cartoons on Kids YT for peppa pig where they put Momo scenes in it? This stuff happens all the time everywhere. Inappropriate content should not be allowed on “family-friendly” platforms. Period. Those platforms should be locked at 18+ / 21+ and certainly not advertised to users below that age.
Spidey, as an autistic woman I love how receptive you are to learning about and recognizing that autistic people do not act in the ways expected by non-autistics. The community in general isn't using Aspergers anymore as you noted, but also we don't tend to like using "functioning" labels or "mild/severe" labels. Zuckerberg might have a mild presenting autism, but that doesn't mean that his experience is "mild". He may have lower support needs or may be high masking, but he doesn't have "mild" autism. Again, I love your videos and you did a great job on this one!
I would definitely argue with the characterization that Asperger’s is a mild form of autism. The characteristics are just different than what pops into people’s mind when they think of autism. People who once were labeled as suffering from Aspergers fall on the Autism spectrum and the severity of their symptoms can be very severe and crippling.
@TraumaLlama91 the only reason he places any emphasis at all on Zuckerberg's diagnosis is because of the fact that reading an autistic person's body language is going to be different from reading a nuerotypical person's body language. It might be difficult to read their baseline because their behavior can sometimes be much different. His job is to read people and understand that person's baseline behavior is a huge part of that, as is identifying any reason why it might look a bit different to a layperson.
"Would you like to apologise to the families of every person who died from a tragic accident in your district ? They're here with us today, go on, take your chance." Heeeellooooo ad hominem fallacies !
A great video thank you! In all honesty, I think you give the senators too much credit. I perceive them to be there to just make a great show for the parents there and the people at home. They are not looking for solutions at all and it is not because they are too emotional. They enlarge their emotions because that resonates with voters who are open to being influenced. ;) But fair enough, Mr Tills was looking for solutions.
The AI system for sexually explicit content on fb is broken. I have reported so much of that kind of content (likely posted by bots on groups very much not meant to be about that sort of content). Every time i report it to fb, the report comes back that it doesn't go against community standards. I have tried contacting fb about this issue and haven't gotten a response ever. I have exactly 0 faith in fb to moderate any sort of content at this point. The solution for now, at least, is that my children do not go online. They're too young to understand the consequences of online activity so until they're old enough to understand how their behavior can be used and manipulated online as well as old enough to deal with some of the content they may see online, they'll be staying offline. I don't post their pictures/videos/personal information online and neither does anyone else.
It would be awesome if you were the official Senate hearing interrogator. Maybe we could get answers for a lot of different issues. Thank you for this video. As usual, you break it down so well.
I've gotten upset before when I see inappropriate things on social media sites and have frequently reported these things however because I now work for a website, I do have a bit of a different perspective on some of these things. The site I am employed by is a selling website but it's basically the same thing, finding the bad guys and getting rid of them so that the site is not ruined for others who have the right intentions. These "bad guys" are relentless and because it's online, the anonymity aspect makes things worse. We shut them down one day, they are back the next day and the next. It's difficult to control. Now, if these social media sites are not interested in doing anything about it, that's different but that's my two cents. Great video!
I believe when he kept looking down at the same spot, he was looking at a water bottle cap he had been fiddling with to sooth himself. There are a few clips you can see it Great video Spidey. Certainly a tough one. Thank you
The senator is acting foolish. If he genuinely wanted answers/resolutions, the questions would be different. He just wants to vent indignation. He cannot accomplish anything by asking in this way and overriding answers. We could have solutions here but instead there is just disconnection and so there can be no place to agree to a way that serves for betterment. Where there is agreement there is power where there is disagreement there is none. As is evident as we look around in this world.
I apologize in advance for the long comment but I would like to point a few things: 1- Zuckerberg might have anticipated that he might have to apologize but didn't really wanted to because it would increase his stress in an already stressful situation. Hence his "sure" reply. When I go to something important, I try to predict the most probable scenarios/questions and prepare for them. Sometimes I make a list of them as topics right beside my actual talking topics. Maybe he is looking down to a similar list of his own? FYI, I use those as a kind of score on my work. If many of the questions made are covered in my probable scenarios/topics, score me. It means most of the things I thought about are probably not important and I need only to improve my work tactics a little. If many questions are raised for which have I not prepared then I need to improve my work a lot. 2- The "see results anyway" has to be there for multiple reasons: 1) sometimes people are looking for information but lack the appropriate terms/words and end up with results they are not really looking for but they will not know until they see them; 2) the result they are expecting may be mislabeled as inappropriate (example: I have seen sites/media/search results being blocked because they contain the character sequence "horn" which, even as a word, has multiple meanings depending on context and not all are inappropriate). Without accessing that content, no one can be certain if the specific result is being mislabeled or failing to appear due to some other factor like server/service failure; 3) It is almost impossible for any company to block access of an user to their site because the company has no way to validate the information. Take the age example given in the video. Any user can say they are any age they want to and the company has no way to verify it unless a third party, like a parent, intervenes. The company has to take your word for it. It can not demand everyone to have a third party validate your age. Even then the "third party" could be just yourself using a different account. 3- Without wanting to defend any of the tech companies, I want to explain some of the technology and how it works in broad strokes. Probably what Zuckerberg was trying to do but was not allowed. But first, a little background about me. I do not have, or have I ever had, any social media and the most social thing I do is sporadically commenting on youtube. Years ago, I implemented a recommendation system for a medium sized company (now defunct/bankrupt). A recommendation system is a set of algorithms that process selected data (common examples of data are text or images from posts, or browser/site navigation history), assigns probabilities to each item of such data (examples of items are words/people/actions/places/themes/shapes within images/URLs of visited sites) and correlates each item with all the others to produce a list of most probable items given a reference item or set of items. This is how search engines and social media sites work and are able to provide search results or recommend media on your social feed. Some algorithms are more complex than others and may involve the so called AI. Independently of which algorithm is used, they are not capable of reasoning, they only do what they are programed to do. If something needs to be removed from the results, it must be programed into the algorithm. But, and this is the tricky part, while algorithms are not capable of reasoning, their users (humans, hopefully, most of them) are not only capable of reasoning but also capable of deception, which creates a cat and mouse game of users of a platform trying to evade the restrictions imposed by the platform, and programmers trying to catch those deceptions and program new restrictions to the algorithm. Being the programmers severely outnumbered by the amount of users, specially companies with a large user base, it is inevitable that it takes a long time for restrictions to be effective. 4- I see this type of situations as a plane crash. There is always a sequence of multiple failures that lead to the crash. If only one thing failed, the plane would not crash. So, I do not think that the companies are the only thing that could have failed and the committee should analyze what else failed. I have seen people hand a tablet/phone to their children with an attitude of "Here. Take this. Now don't bother me". Did parenting failed? If so why? Was it because the parents are overworked or neglect because they lack proper education themselves? Was there a lack of infrastructures that should support the parents, like kindergartens, caretakers or institutions for post-school activities? Also, I am no psychologist but I do not think suicidal tendencies are acquired overnight so, did the friends noticed anything? Is there anything in place were they could have reported it in case they are too afraid to talk to either parents (theirs or the friends)? What else failed and why? And can be done about that? 5- Most of those senators seem more preoccupied in asserting their power by shouting, interrupting answers and making themselves the center of attention, than in resolving the social the problem. Irate people are not as rational and the senators are taking advantage of it by inducing that in the crowd. I can almost bet that, sometime in the future, no one will remember what Zuckerberg apologized for but most will remember that senator XYZ made Zuckerberg apologize.
This feels like "Tell me you're neurodivergent without telling me" 😂 But all very good points! (And they don't take away anything from the fact that more proactivity and bigger share of resources should be placed on the issue by the companies.)
These parents owe all these executives an apology for refusing to actually parent their children, and blaming everyone else for their bad/ lacking parenting skills.
Yeah, they ceded control of their children to these networks and that is on them. If they thought about it even for a second they would have realized that's pretty freaking stupid
You are 100% correct. I wish these Senators would watch your review and take your advice. NOTHING ever gets accomplished in these hearings. Instead of confrontational, grandstanding hearings, they need to have real discussion and exchanges. Find common ground. They don’t even try. It’s embarrassing to watch.
These senators want media time to make voters to remember them as powerful and aggressive. This hearing is about their visibility, not about the actual performance of Meta or Facebook. If the senators were about actually trying to fix things, the discussion style would be totally different.
These are the same Senators that don't make any effort when children die in school shootings. The only reason this hearing exists is not because they care, but because they can bully and make noise while, yet again doing nothing. They are using these families and it is horrific.
Great topic Spidey!~ When Zuck paused .... and then said ".....alright, senator, um", he was answering the question "Mr Zuckerberg, what the HE** were you thinking", in addition to using that moment as a pause to compose himself, I also think it was to draw attention to the disrespectful wording of the question - letting it hang in the air for a moment. I think Zuck is almost surprised Senator Cruz would use that kind of crude wording during a US Senate hearing and he is a little taken aback, but also smart enough to let the question sit a moment: "what the he** were you thinking". 😠
😂 I find it laughable how many people are focusing on how offensive the senators are to him. I could care less whether these senators are left, right, middle, or somewhere in between. What I do find offensive is how these parents had to sit there and listen to an idiot who could care less about what happened to their children. This guy is well above the curve in intelligence, so don't fool yourself with all the emotions going back and forth. He was smart enough as you said to let the question sit for a second, but he's not smart enough to fix the problem and protect our children? Now that's laughable.
@@debbieoseguera7960 Smart enough to be 99% effective at filtering out the problem. Which is absolutely unheard of in any operational processes type of functions. World class standards. The absolute best in the industry. And those who are doing nothing to contribute other than complaining that the best programs ever made to take the task on, are not good enough for them, with ZERO understanding of what is involved in doing such a task at the speed a volume. They pout from the sidelines "make it better" "fix it stupit", with their lower lip sticking out, looking like the child that they also sound like. Please inform these types of people of their foolishness, if you ever come across them.
I think they do that on purpose because the way I see it nothing ever gets resolved in these meetings because nobody ever lets anybody finish talking. They can ask all the tough questions they want, but the questions never get answered and nobody ever gets held accountable.
These lawmakers don't want to resolve anything. They do these things so they can look good to their voters. But then they continue to do nothing while collecting the paychecks that we all contribute to with our hard work.
I don’t see Congress or senate doing anything to compensate the families or people who are struggling with our day to day. They are more responsible than the private companies. Senators are rude why not listen senators are at fault too. Waste of CEOs time
I’m sick of the antagonistic tone of our so-called leaders who feed the meanness in our culture. Yes social media companies can do more, should do more, and ned to be held to task. However, grandstanding bullying conduct by these senators fuels at worst and validates at best the hateful predatory lying divisive content that is equally destructive. Imho
Thank you so much for the invaluable advice about leaving the emotions outside the discussions when trying to move something forward. I am currently wrestling with my local authority and I feel i would have made better progress using your advice so next time round i will try my hardest to contain myself
Here in Kenya, a girl was led to her death by decapitation and dismembering through Instagram. Social media platforms should have a possible threat alarm system in direct communicatuons with strangers or recent friends
There’s simply no way for websites to detect potential crimes through message exchanges even with AI and ML (machine learning). Even then that would be an enormous breach of privacy. There’s absolutely no way for social media to detect who is a stranger to someone. Having something as a “social media police force” just doesn’t work. Is your idea to flag any messages that include phrases like “hey let’s meet up”? If so police would be knocking on just about everyone’s doors as I’m sure millions of people, myself included, use social media as the primary way to connect with real friends. The incident of the girl you mentioned is unfortunate. But that’s the risk in things like this. This was not an issue in social media not having an alarm system. Everyone puts themselves at risk the moment they contact any stranger regardless if it’s on social media or out in public.
25:00 "who did I fire?"... I wish I could fire the parents who give cellphones to their kids instead of spending time with them. Who don't prepare them to be able to deal with the complications of the modern world without being emotionally destroyed by being exposed to something they didn't want to see. Yes, social networks need more security, of course. But also, how old were those kids and what's the policy for opening a new account? I don't really care since I'm old as time, but should 9 year olds or whatever even own a smartphone?... Not saying Meta is perfect or Zuckerberg is a saint, but he's also not the only one to blame. Where are the parents?
As an adult performer, social media safety & the protection of children online is very important to me. I wish a paywall separated children from adult content. Looking forward to watching this.
They need ID verification for account signups. If it’s an account is in the age of minority, a parent/guardian should submit their ID, and the parent/guardian must have an existing account and they get parental controls over their children’s accounts. This is how we hold parents responsible. A kid can easily create an adult lurker account, and bot accounts are also a problem.
The parents themselves should pay attention to what their children are watching. They are part of the problems, why does a 7 year old have a phone or Instagram? There are apps to monitor what their kids do, I get it kids are exposed to a lot especially from their peers. However they should be JUST as responsible for what their kids are allowed to do.
@@NovalieSweet I totally agree with that. I think a lot of people shift blame and kids are the ones that suffer for it in the end. If we all worked together everything would be much better and personal responsibility is a huge part of that.
@@olli3686I thought of that before but obviously social media companies won't do that unless they were legally forced to do it so it still goes nowhere. Realistically, social media companies need to continue putting protective systems and parental control in place while the parents need to do better when giving their kids access to devices. Many parents get their small kids iPads so they don't bother the parents and then those kids are on TikTok, TH-cam, etc every single day.
Cruz and Hawley are so combative that it makes it hard for anyone to want to comply. Their style of questioning causes stress. I would have been VERY uncomfortable.
There's accountability that needs to be had in all corners. The law makers, the social media platforms but also the parents. Stop worrying about being too strict with your kids and start engaging! Worry more about their LONG-TERM mental health and well being, their moral fiber, than being their friend or keeping up with the Jones'. I'm a parent of 2 "kids" in their mid 20s and I was restrictive of their screen time through mid teens and had access to real-time data on their phones and computer (though rarely needed it - the fact they knew I did was enough usually). They didn't resent it, they understood it. If they had to hide it, they shouldn't do it. We had frequent open dialog about actions and their consequences, both emotional and material, and about empathy and doing what's right even when it's difficult, not what feels good in the moment, and the long term benefits and pride that comes from those tough decisions. My kids weren't perfect by any means, but I can say they were involved in very little of the drama I saw others going through. Being a responsible parent is a full time job, and is more and more difficult as time passes (or we complicate it... ). I am truly thankful I am not raising another child in today's world. It is not for the faint at heart.
@@seedsoflove7684 It's amazing how you managed to completely ignore the entirety of the point of what was said to basically say the same thing but stupider and without personal stories/ examples of the methods used to protect your kids wen raising them around social media. I don't personally have children yet but i see OP's comment as an pointer in the right direction and a stepping stone in forming my own methods to protect my kids. That is my take on having read OP's comment.
My parents weren't as into controlling my devices or content, (maybe at one point when they thought I am addicted to gaming, luckily they rested their case when I pointed out dad is also gaming or programming for hours until 3am and he is revered for algorithmic thinking and his PhD but I am being restricted in achieving the same 😂) but I definitely do agree that too many people seem to want the whole world to raise the kids right instead of them... True, it does take a village to raise child, but the parent has the utmost responsibility for that. A child experiencing abuse and sometimes even ending their life is a terrible thing to the parent, but it tells me that everyone failed this child along the way - the media companies who provide access to content, the parents themselves who didn't instruct the child on how to navigate and consume media, how to process things and open up to them, and then didn't take action soon enough, the schools and other facilities the kids attended that should also pick up troubling signals thanks to the trained personnel and mitigate and/or alarm the parents early... You can't just throw a set of clothes, a frozen pizza and an iPhone at a child and consider it parenting 🤷♀️
21:35 Agree 100% with you: If content may be harmful, it should be blocked until human eyes can determine if it's actually harmful or it's helpful to create awareness. Personally, I don't think Zuckerberg cares. Senator stated, they've communicated with Zuckerberg's team who refused to answer their inquiry. I also believe, for myself - Children should not be on social media. But that's just me. There is content that I have found disgusting. Zuckerbergs platforms refuse to block etc. He's not being truthful.
Perhaps if the AI blocked everything that could potentialy be harmfull half of what is posted would be blocked and Instagram wouldn't work. I think that maybe there can be a reason for not blocking everything but I don't have any data or knowledge about how the recognition of harmfull content works. Its a shame that Mark wasn't allowed to answer.
How do you get to be a senator without learning the basics of nonviolent communication? This is unfortunate. We need Marshall Rosenberg in their mediating lol so that we can get solutions.
Wouldn't that be a huge move forward - all public representatives need to pass a course in non-violent communication skills before they get to step out into their job.
3:54 Creepy guy. His voice sounds so metallic and robotic Back in 2011 I joined a group called "The Anti-facebook League of Intelligentia". Does anybody remember that website? We collected huge evidence long before the Cambridge Analytica scandal. We got shut down
Parents should be the sources of the problem! Big organisations like Facebook, meta, discord, TikTok whatever is here to earn $, not to pamper kids who do stupid stuff where they watch online.
I agree. I would have loved to hear what his reply would be wothout being interrupted. The question and finding is absolutely gold and has the support of everyone in the room. But it still is a question and a a chance to reply uninterrupted no matter if it makes any sense or not is important. The answer can either make things clear or end up just digging a grave for themselves
Unfortunately, having dealt with Congress myself, it appears many of the senators are grandstanding for their constituents rather than trying to truly address such a critically important issue. I don’t think it’s simply that they don’t know how to ask questions; I (cynically, I suppose) believe a number of senators saw it as their platform rather than trying to get real answers for the impacted families, which is sad but seems to be the state of government.
thanks for this very good analysis. you should coach those people and advise them. Very good to see your ability to empathize with all the counterparties involved. very inspirational!
Can you please do an analysis on how the CEO of Tiktok was subjected unfairly to racist remarks by the US senate? Especially on him being a communist and having links to China despite having Singaporean citizenship. As some who’s Asian, it really had my blood boiling 🤦🏽♀️ it’s like asking if I got links to the Taliban just because I’m Muslim.
It really just kills me that its the GOP getting mad at these companies for allowing the posting of fake information… because is that not the pot calling the kettle black? I only caught a small part of the hearing where the guy made Mark apologize to the families and then like just give me a break..
I believe that senator Cruz was the one that left on vacation when Texas froze over. Leaving everyone to figure it on their own. I think he also mentions in the video where he reminds Zuckerberg that he's on national television (which was weird). I am not very fond of Cruz; he just seems so ingenuine. Like he wants to look good to the public so bad and he's so UPSET about this social media thing (which is important, don't get me wrong). Just wish he had the same passion for other problems too, just my opinion. Also, I really wanted to know what Zuckerberg had to say, but I guess the world may never know. 🙃
I have pros and cons to this video. Senators are not behavioral analysts. People all over the United States, organizations, our court systems, government agencies, and Congress have been trying to put an end to the harm that Facebook, Meta and Instagram causes our children, adults, and animals over the years. We all tried working with Zuckerberg for a resolution, but no positive response and outcome came to pass. Zuckerberg refuses to take accountability for his actions, hiding behind Section 230. Yes, he does have a mild form of aspergers, whereas I have a higher degree of aspergers. No excuse should be given Zuckerberg, as he is arrogant!!! He didn't apologize for taking accountability of wrong doing, but rather, he apologized that these families have gone through this ordeal, which is not an apology. Senators do not have to sugarcoat their questions and how they are presented. Zuckerberg should have directly answered the questions at hand instead of beating around the bush, babbling, and not much being said. When he was asked YES & NO questions, he still didn't answer them. He thinks his wealth makes him above the law. He had ample time before the set date of this session, and he failed miserably. His platforms have caused much more harm than recorded. I will stop my rant and await your response.
These hearings are so much about Senators showing their constituents their ideology, rather than working towards solutions
If zuck wanted to work to solutions he would have started before the 1st hearing. Being this is the 4th, I'm suspecting he's not about to start, ever.
It’s sad because this is truly about life and pursuit of happiness, not about ideology. Every political ideology should have protecting children in their agendas.
100%
This!
The amount of virtue signaling from the senators. They are equally as guilty when they can pass laws that allow for easier prosecution of online criminals. They are projecting all the blame on the companies instead of working with them
"this is two people monologing at the same time" DING DING DING.
Modern politics and 'political discourse' summarized in 9 words.
These billionaires need to be held accountable....ask yourself why do they look so young and they aren't that young....mmmmmm
This is such a perfect comment.
@@anneloving8405It’s typically because they live quite luxurious lives. You’d be shocked with what simple fillers and Botox can accomplish (one example is a nose job without the surgery).
They have been doing this behavior with EVERY person they are horrible
In this situation, both the senators and the social media platforms are ACUTELY aware of the dangers of their platforms. How do you have dialog with someone who sat in that very chair 5 years ago, proclaiming the same thing he says today? Why does it take whistleblowers for us to find out the planned targeting and damage that is being done to our children? There is no need for debate. It needs to stop and unfortunately, the only way it will stop imo is when the consumer walks away from it. Period.
They don't want the problems solved. They want the performative speeches and righteous anger & blame pointing.
That's right!
References for this statement of fact? Peer-reviewed publication references are preferred; thanks!
What do you mean? They're voted in, because they act like their ideology aligns with their constituents.
Its really as simple as the following:
If someone doesn't comprehend how a product works, they should not be allowed to make laws over it.

I totally agree
Narcissistic human beings aren't really looking for the answer, just what they want to hear and what is on their own personal agenda.
He interfered in our election in 2016 by screwing with the algorithms around what got shown to whom (I don’t have links to hand, but this has been demonstrated.)
He is not innocent of wrongdoing.
Yeah they are just scoring points not promoting change
but what you're missing, is this has been going on for a long time, and Zuck has no intention of solving anything.
1000 percent!
Love your comment!
Totally agree
I didn’t see this one specifically but in most committees hearings the congressman have a specific time. Seen so where they run out of time due to the one being questioned not answering the question. Yes it’s infuriating because we expect a question and answer exchange but committee hearings aren’t structured as such. I had a broken tv that got stuck on c-span. I think it’s about making a point rather than anything else.
'Tis classic(sadly) senator style
Senators we’re grand standing and just there to look like they care. Wouldn’t even let them speak to answer anything. Pretty much shows how nothing gets done in Washington. Great video Spidey!
Wow. Just wow. That 43 minutes went by in a blink. I hope you're going to do more from this hearing.
Warning: political comment coming: high praise for Senator Tillis! He broke away from the usual Republican method of attack. He appeared sincere in wanting to work cooperatively with social media to protect the future leaders of the world, children.
Senator Tom Collins was however appalling and completely ignorant. Singapore has been a separate country for over 400 years. It is not part of China
@@TheBehavioralArts Yep!
As an (I guess Republican could be used to describe me but I don't really like being known as that cause I try to stay out of politics as much as possible) extremely conservative dude
Seriously!!
Hell some adults dont need to be on social media. Let alone children
That's what I got from watching the video too. You're asking these companies to monitor millions of children with a few thousand staff, but parent can try to do their part too watching over a few children. And yes. If the kids wanna find loopholes, they will. But at least everyone did their part as best they could
Diluted? ... oh deluded.
@@notme2day Nice. You obviously knew what was meant but you had to display your superior intellect with a blatant correction for all to see. Do you feel better about yourself now? Because I'm sure the person you unnecessarily corrected doesn't.
I completely agree, so many parents have zero accountability for protecting their children.
Thanks for this awesome analysis and also for bringing this hearing to attention! I found out about it here, yet to see it in any traditional media. I ended up watching the whole hearing session.
Watch the small groups that catch the pedi’s who get pop ups and it leads them to CP groups. So many started on mets’s social media platforms. Leading to harder CP even with babies. He is just what she said. And he’s a dad .
I'm so glad you enjoyed the analysis and watched the whole hearing. :)
BTW: Thank you for another great analysis, Behavioral Arts.
cmon they are politicians that too american
what could u expect
It's a general lack of standards.
Well said 💯
It is.
Well, it is whenever cameras are involved.
It’s all theater 🎭!! 😏😕
And not to mention, he probably can’t name a person or team that was fired, due to legal reasons, even if he knew their names.
Bingo. It’s all empty theatre.
Been this way for decades. Elitists wasting tax payer funds for NOTHING
I agree 💯 Spidey! Seemed most of the senators were more interested in grandstanding for the cameras than getting real answers. Missed opportunity…such a shame.

They call it a hearing but really it’s an excuse to give a public tongue lashing w no goal of improving the situation. “Asking a question” is just time to stand on their soap box w no attempt to listen to an answer

Creepy Ted has nothing but accusations and grandstanding.
Here, we see the evidence of the dumbing down of a society. The senators are supposed to be examples of respect and decorum. If we can't/aren't holding them accountable, how dare they expect to hold anyone accountable. In a word, disgraceful.
one word AMERICANS

Very good point.
24:40 "I know you're aware of this because he sent an EMAIL about it to you".
I personally get so much email that I cannot reasonably read all the email that some random people are sending to me and I'm basically nobody. I cannot even imagine how Zuckerberg is supposed to read ALL email that somebody is sending to him.
When senators ask questions like this I continue to lose faith in government- it’s like they can’t wait to be assholes on display. Its all pathetic tbh. This entire charade of hearings.
It truly is disgraceful
They are asking these questions because we the public can’t? And u think they’d listen to us? so who is there to stand up to big tech?
Yes. I have been watching these kinds of inquires for a very long time because I can’t trust the news to tell me how they went. It is always a theater to Congress, the Senate and the Committees that are involved. 🤷🏼♀️😏

Yes! You make a great point. Many republicans are using problems for their benefit rather than solving them. The border is a great example of that.
We call her the opioid queen here in Tennessee. She is owned by the pharmaceutical industry dealing with opioid and the addiction it causes. She could very well be sitting at the table with the social media ceo's but it's a different subject but just as bad. And the parents enraged with the social media giants seem to forget about the fact that they bought the smartphone, even iPhone for their children and didn't disable apps.
If you watch the entire session a lot of the senators were like that no matter what political party they were from. Smh 🤦🏼♀️
@@chanelv5373 it’s a strategy employed by some in both parties but used in different ways and for different reasons. Tillis was the most effective in promoting a ‘team’ strategy. Some dems do that but not as regularly.
Sen. Blackburn is treading very, very close to slander in her ridiculous accusations. That's absolutely insane.
Unbelievable.
I respectfully disagree. Respectfully.
Look at their stock price at the moment of this hearing versus now. It went up. Nobody cared about this.
@@HeatherEss Firstly, did you not listen to this?! People are being PROMPTED to view without searching. Secondly, someone could tell/show another person about it, people talk about this crap all the time in workplaces etc, younger people do search it whether peer pressured or curious, a parent may well do a quick search for something to check first if anything is available before they allow their kid access. .. there’s plenty of reasons someone may come across it.

I totally missed this hearing so it's awesome seeing you analyze it.
I’m also an autistic woman and I felt like he placed too much emphasis on his autism. Autism doesn’t create greed. Autism doesn’t enable trafficking.
You watched this TWICE?? You're super human Spidey!!! Once was all I could do. Thank you for your amazing content as usual!! ♡
The senators are such hypocrites. One could find failures in their tenure: "crime has skyrocketed in your district. WHO DID YOU FIRE?!"
"Would you like to apologise to the families of every person who died from a tragic accident in your district ? They're here with us today, go on, take your chance."
Heeeellooooo ad hominem fallacies !
A great video thank you! In all honesty, I think you give the senators too much credit. I perceive them to be there to just make a great show for the parents there and the people at home. They are not looking for solutions at all and it is not because they are too emotional. They enlarge their emotions because that resonates with voters who are open to being influenced. ;)
But fair enough, Mr Tills was looking for solutions.
Agreed 100%
The Senators only get a short time to ask questions and alot of witnesses slow walk the questions from the side that isn’t for them.
Interesting because my phone or computer corrects ‘a lot’ automatically.
Exactly. These other comments are disturbing..
This is infuriating to witness these unproductive demagogs blaming the irresponsibility of parents on platforms.

I saw that and was thinking the same thing!
I apologize in advance for the long comment but I would like to point a few things:
1- Zuckerberg might have anticipated that he might have to apologize but didn't really wanted to because it would increase his stress in an already stressful situation.
Another outstanding analysis, Spidey!
😂all of a sudden i have an urge to lick my lips! i wonder now how often i do this at work when making announcements.
These parents owe all these executives an apology for refusing to actually parent their children, and blaming everyone else for their bad/ lacking parenting skills.
Yeah, they ceded control of their children to these networks and that is on them. If they thought about it even for a second they would have realized that's pretty freaking stupid
@@keithmichael112 Some people aren't aware of the problem
I didnt think i would watch this all the way through, but i did. Thank you for a very neat analysis :)
Thank you for covering this! The look down seemed grounding to me to help manage/regulate emotion.
Bro really just censored "hell" 💀
Oh plz.....😂

Smart enough to be 99% effective at filtering out the problem.
Waste of CEOs time
I really appreciate, your thoughts. To help us understand what’s going on. Thank you.
Imho
👍

Exactly!

"who did I fire?"...
Aspergers now is simply referenced as Autism Spectrum Disorder Level 1 which is mild symptoms.
An absolute anger-fueled blunder by these senators! They did more damage than good.
So happy you put this out on your channel 🤟😊 🇨🇦
As an adult performer, social media safety & the protection of children online is very important to me. I wish a paywall separated children from adult content. Looking forward to watching this.
They need ID verification for account signups. If it’s an account is in the age of minority, a parent/guardian should submit their ID, and the parent/guardian must have an existing account and they get parental controls over their children’s accounts. This is how we hold parents responsible.
A kid can easily create an adult lurker account, and bot accounts are also a problem.
@@olli3686 I think that's fair. I have to provide my ID & a facial scan to be able to upload.
Great analysis yet again Spidey!
U can raise decent kids in any age, if u are careful and protective.
@@Darksin757Production i do have kids and am raising them right. U calling me stupid is just an offense to this channel. Go spew your hate elsewhere.
@@thekeysman6760 It maybe corrected. HAHAHAHA 😉
His voice sounds so metallic and robotic
Back in 2011 I joined a group called "The Anti-facebook League of Intelligentia".
Jumped right on this! Morning Spidey!
Political theater is meant to be attractive to constituents rather than accomplishing legislative objectives.
I was so outraged on his behalf. I am not Asian however I do believe in not setting out to be rude let alone racist to anyone
Man up little boy 😂
It really just kills me that its the GOP getting mad at these companies for allowing the posting of fake information… because is that not the pot calling the kettle black? I only caught a small part of the hearing where the guy made Mark apologize to the families and then like just give me a break..
It was easy for these social medias to flag our comments on certain answers we write. But they won't stop their subjective contents.
Words are easier for ai to decipher than images.
Agreed
