  • Today Jim is doing more draft horse training and Duke & Earl are driving together!! We have only ever done this a couple of times, so we will see how it goes!! They are getting a few different training lessons, both in driving and in standing while hitched up.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Look at the boys! They are just magnificent! I feel very lucky that I get to see these beautiful creatures growing and learning and flourishing at the Gordon Farm! And I can’t help but laugh a little bit every time I see Baron looking in the window!

It's so interesting watching the colts learn new lessons in their training! Jim's gentle nature keeps them calm and not excitable learning different parts of their training. I remember Baron doing some of the same things as he learned "the ropes" of being an excellent draft horse. They are very inquisitive to different surroundings, which is good, though as they progress they'll be more in control of what Jim asks them to do wherever they work! It's a lot to learn and they did very good!!👍 They're a beautiful team together❤

I've noticed a lot of pullers as well as their double tree handlers will start stepping really quick when they are approaching the sled. They have to move quick , but I think they alarm the team when they over react. Just my thoughts.

Beautiful. You are calm, you don’t speak loud to your horses and they learn in calm. I like it so much. You respect your horses. You have a good life and everybody is happy on the farm.

I understand when you say there is no tried-and-true training methods. Just like people, horses are all different and learn things differently. Yes you can apply some things, but not all. And I applaud you for knowing what to do with each one in a particular situation. That just comes with experience. Good job, Jim and Brenda!

Indeedy, how do you answer how do you train horses? It changes, you say. So true, Jim. It's a life time of learning. For those that are just interested I'd say watch a million videos. Otherwise, you do have to have an ability to communicate with animals without anger or fear. Careful attunement. And no substitute for time. Hours, days and years. It's a conversation with the humans responsibility. When it clicks; when it works...it is like that most special teacher.,.the one you remember all your days. It's a kind of faith. Faith in kindness. Being family with all living things in our lives. Careful, move your butt, and other clear, calm directions. Rinse and repeat. Brenda, your skills with the camera makes it so real, it's as good as any IMAX I've seen.

Thanks Jim and Brenda for a good video on training these animals. Your statement of how these will not pull a load until they are trained to give them that confidence that they can pull a load. That is interesting and like you say at the end of this video "That is one reason why horses, these days, are so expensive."

When you can sense what is going to happen before it hapens that,s when you know you have the control. You really can feel what hores are are going to react ahead of the time ( but never 100% ) YOU ARE A VERYGOOD HORSEMEN.

Colts' area blessing, Training is time consuming, today we don't use Horses as much as we did 75 - 100 years ago so we don't tend to have as many on hand. Having several gives one the opportunity to pare faster Waling Hoses and Slowe walking Horses to gather as a team, sometime matching Coler are nice. Have a wonderful day!

If these two develop as quickly as Baron Jim will be having to be careful with regard to what they are asked to do. It just complicates things for a while and if Jim believes that they might be able to handle 10,000 lbs at a pull in a couple of years time I wonder when he will decide it is time to test out Bill and Baron. Congratulations to the Gordon family on your work so far.

Jim love your 2 box stalls .The one that Lady and Bree are in right now and your box stall ( pen ) that is just past Ladys tie stall .I suppose the alleyway could be used as a quick box stall where you installed that new steel gate . Plus you have the large box stall area behind where you park your manure spreader. Plus your 4 tie stall are plenty large enough for your horses to lie down in .As Ken your largest horse proves every night .You may need 3 more tie stalls for Duke and Earl and future for Bree but thats your decicion to make . I believe your tie stalls are 5 ft wide and 10 ft long up on wood .I believe your horses love their tie stall as they walk right into them .Oh and while I am at this your going to have to explain your watering system to some viewers .You have no thirsty horses on your farm .Cheers

Our Belgian, Mac, drives nice, and I’m getting to the point that it’s time to teach him how to hitch up. Two problems I’m facing at the moment is, one I tried to hitch him in July and he bolted on me, I believe that was more of a me problem then a Mac problem. #2 there really isn’t a whole lot of info for training a horse to hitch up. Best game plan I’ve come up with is hitching him to a tire while he’s in the winter yard, (Fenced in area). Teaming him up with an older horse isn’t an option for me, there aren’t any teamsters around my area. Love the videos as always.👍✌️

The Boys did good driving around the corn field! Calendar picture? Holding my breath as they got hitched up to the sled! Really interesting video!

Another excellent video! Learning to drive makes me think of learning to dance and learning to stand reminds me of when I first started trying to practice meditation - doing nothing is actually a (challenging) skill to be mastered for both horse and human! And I love your barn cats! Thank you!

Jim you made a wise decision 👌 getting Duke and Earl. The other horses are great but you needed new blood. Once their trained, they'll be a great team, and they look 👍 good together. Blessings ❤️.

I was thinking early on in the video that you could try taking them over the pole individually before attaching them, etc. You sure have to have patience and stamina to work with them so diligently. Great work 😊
