The stock Tamiya silvercan motor used to be a 27t, 540 and about 2100/2300kv rpm when unloaded. I heard the more modern ones may be a 23 or 25t, but yours is the older version. You can adjust the gear ratios a little. The spacer that goes between the motor and the gearbox, can be removed and the motor can be mounted directly to the gearbox. The different mounting holes mean you can fit a much larger pinion. The one from the Tamiya hornet fits / works perfect for more top end. I run my old Chrome Pumpkin on 2s with an old Hobbywing 2 pole brushless motor. 17.5 and about 2400kv i think. It's pretty tame. The third shock mod on the back axle is maybe worth doing to stop the gearbox slamming into the body. If you want to upgrade to another brushed motor i reckon anything south of 20t is going to be a bit too much
Nice build. I just recently picked up my first Tamiya kit. A VW type2 Wheelie on the WR02 chassis. Putting in a Dynamite 20t motor with a Dynamite 60amp esc and a Savox SW-0231MG servo.
1979, my 1st 'real rc car' was a hitec kangaroo! Started racing a year later (dad had to be sure I wasn't like his friends' kids, & lose interest!), with a tamiya frog🤯. 1st true race car was the kyosho ultima. Discovered then, I was good at it! Wow, 1980. Damn I'm old! But, I've been "modifying rc since 1980"!😁😁😁😁😁
&, if I remember correctly the gen 1 tamiya (pumpkin, grasshopper, hornet) used a 380 brushed motors. Later on they included a plastic adapter to use THEIR 540 motors. Gen 2 series ain't as renown as the originals. I bought a 2nd gen clodbuster & was badly disappointed.
I just looked at this yesterday at hobby town, this was the 1st hobby grade rc I got in 1988. I want to get the black edition though. Need to definitely get one of these in my collection.
I love it. I can’t wait til you rip on it. I just recently built a Lunchbox, Blackfoot, Hotshot, and still have the original Hornet I had as a kid. I even got a Bruiser clone. All the cars I wish I could of had as a kid.
I still have my Blackfoot that is my first hobby grade RC! Lots of memories of great times with my brother and friends! The Pumpkin is actulaly 1/12th scale, it also has a lowrider version. I am building a Blockhead Motors Wild One right now, just putting in the 27T on 2s
I have the Bullhead edition. In the axles where the spider gears I smeared it full of. Body filler it made it a posi trac solid axle for more. Traction works great. A true 4x4
Hahaha just put the last bit of clear cote on a re release blackfoot last night, these old tamiya's just take me back to my childhood, oh that motor is a 27 turn, I picked up the sport tuned for the my blackfoot it's a 23 turn!! Awesome video as always 👌
I had one as a kid.. it’s probably still around… but I always got yard sale stuff.. so mine had no remote.. so I took the gears out and made it roll free
Good choice. I just finished my Black Edition last weekend. It's fun. I give it some Black paint and detail it then decals. I may upgrade to oil fill cva's.
I've only been in the hobby a little over 3 years and have jumped in with both feet I absolutely love it. Be careful with that antenna tube "you'll poke your eye out" or maybe even the guy you're standing on the side of. 😀
The transmission in the pumpkin/lunchbox is allot stronger than you think once you use proper berings! I'm running a 4300kv brushless in my pumpkin and it's crazy fun. The only thing that keeps breaking is the body mounts lol 😆
It's nice I have one and love driving it!! you be surprised that gearbox is pretty strong you could put a brushless system in it but the car is so crazy when driving I would not put anything to fast in it.
The gears can take that 3S with 27T motor, easy. Ive run my lunchbox with 17.5T brushless motor on 3S, with no problem at all, it's just difficult to control on 3S🤣 but it's a good small backyard basher👍
Tamiya use Japan JIS standard head screws on their kits…it’s not the same as the Phillips head screws. If you use the right JIS screwdriver, you will not strip screws head anymore. 😉
I love it that is an awesome truck I'm going to try to get my hands on them for sure if you happen to get a chance to read this comment is there anyway you could tell me the wheelbase of that body ??
Just remember, Joe - size doesn't matter...it's what you do with it. As for Tamiya kits, in general, yeah, they're simple...but, it would be nice (REALLY nice) of they updated Miss pic these 'old' kits. I mean, seriously, that suspension is SERIOUSLY outdated. Enjoy. As for me, about to start building an Enduro Gatekeeper kit, adding the IFS.
There is nothing like building a Tamiya.
There are so many that I wanted as a 80's teen and I still want them today. Lol
Right? When I was a kid I thought the Lunchbox was a big truck. Then the Bullhead came out and my mind exploded! Great build! Beautiful!
Omg Iv my my paps whole set of those same old screwdrivers
The first kit I built as a kid was the Lunchbox. I was so excited! There's something special about the Tamiya collection.
Tamiya silver can motors are 27t. Great kit!! I love Tamiya kits.
I looked this up yesterday! LOL!
Brings back so many memories
yes sir it does

Like a powerful magic mirror. incredible!
Never thought I'd like chrome with blue flames but that body looks awesome! You should definitely make a body like that into a class 0 crawler.
that would be a neat tiny little one for sure.

that must be the adapter thing on this one?

Yes sir I believe so. Tho IDK y anyone would want to go down in motor size.

! 👍😁
Love the gen 1 tamiya!!!
& everyone remember, thx to these, WE/YOU have the TECHNOLOGY of today!

yeah, thats it, the things we dreamed of as a kid for sure
looks like you are having fun building this kit!
Well a little but Tamiya kits are so different.
I still have my Blackfoot that is my first hobby grade RC! Lots of memories of great times with my brother and friends! The Pumpkin is actulaly 1/12th scale, it also has a lowrider version.

Very cool!

I built a Kyosho Big Brute when I was 17. It took 18 hours strait to finish with those little Phillips screws. And it wouldn't run when I finished lol
In some parts of the world, RC ppl are STILL using 75/27mhz radios. Actually, on Amazon and flEbay, sellers are too with their 'toy's brands.
They are too much fun.
Yep, gata love Tamiya kits🤙🏼
I got my first rc car at radio shack called the mountain man. Had a black foot, clodbster, and rc10 in the late 80's early 90's.
Hahaha just put the last bit of clear cote on a re release blackfoot last night, these old tamiya's just take me back to my childhood, oh that motor is a 27 turn, I picked up the sport tuned for the my blackfoot it's a 23 turn!! Awesome video as always 👌
awesome thank you
Very cool old school RC. 🔥👍✌️
I had one as a kid.. it’s probably still around… but I always got yard sale stuff.. so mine had no remote.. so I took the gears out and made it roll free
The first hobby grade I had.
I’d love to do a “midnight pumpkin” style LMT.
Love the tamiya stuff. Always have. My lhs has some old 80ish model tamiya race buggies. I've begged him to sell me one

I will try it on 3s soon, its awesome on 2s too
27turn on the motor!
I’ve still got the taureg cc-01 a few Blackfoot

Just don't jump it lol 🤣 th-cam.com/video/d680Vti6joQ/w-d-xo.html

HELL YESSSS!
I have a tamiya prerunner with a dodge body on it. My esc gave out so I need to upgrade. Hw 1060 here I come
Yeah mine was the black edition
My first hobby grade was a Blackfoot I changed the motor out to one of those trinity horsepower motors
Joe loves his shiny lol
Classic. Why are you not running it yet.
Send it

I didn't know this
The Mabushi motors included in most Tamiya kits are 27 turns
I love it that is an awesome truck I'm going to try to get my hands on them for sure if you happen to get a chance to read this comment is there anyway you could tell me the wheelbase of that body ??
Yeah looks awesome dude
I just acually saw a review on the truck on amin hobbys
Very cool....👍👍
my first r/c then rc10
Cool👍🏾
even you use brushed you need to be careful you can destroy the gear, some brushed motors are really powerful
