    What a gem! I never knew George had ever sat in with Deep Purple,and I still can't fathom how some people still underestimate the fine guitar playing of the so-called "quiet Beatle".One of the best ever-just listen to any of his solos on the various studio versions of the song "Let It Be",and see if you disagree(LOL).I miss George.

    A prefatory comment: DP is my favorite band and Blackmore is my favorite guitarist. That said, I am amazed by a few of the comments that indicate that George Harrison cannot "hold his own" on stage with Deep Purple. It's utter nonsense. George Harrison is among one of the greatest songwriters and a fabulous musician. One of the most amazing thing about George's playing is his restraint.

    • @miguelurdaci7884
      @miguelurdaci7884 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, restraint, clarity and to the point. If it hadn't been for the onset of the axe lords in the late 60s he would have stood out as a guitarist then. He certainly stands out now; now that all the fuss is over (don't get me wrong, lots of that fuss was/is great. I'm just saying it kinda stole George's thunder at the time)

    George had fun. He was looking at Ritchie when Ritchie was playing his solo like he look at had fun with Gary Moore 5 years later. George was respect by all the greats.

    I don't know what's more surprising, a beatle playing with Deep Purple or Ritchie Blackmore playing with another guitarist on the same stage.

    • @9CaratPurple
      @9CaratPurple 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes Blackmore seems quite relaxed about it and happy to be playing some rhythm when Harrison was soloing. It shows he was prepared to play for benefit of the band and the song. In Blackmore's solo he plays a short passage of sweep picking which showed he wasn't just going through the motions of playing any old nonsense before he left the stage.

    George Harrison was a great friend of Jon Lord and Ian Paice, they all lived in Henley on Thames. George Harrison was also at the Royal Albert hall in 1999 when Purple performed the 30th anniversary of Jon Lords concerto, although he did not perform. Ian Paice also recorded the run devil run album with Paul McCartney that same year.

      Mandi Ferrer your so correct they were having fun and those vibes the crowd feels and Ritchie Blackmore has not played much at all live with any Guitarist but down deep Ritchie can be a great guy. But fun we had in the day. And fun rock bands was what it was about and band's like Black Oak Arkansas and Slade maybe weren't super technically but when you went to their show's you were so tired from jumping around and Watching Jim Dandy and Dave Hill having a blast performing. I raised my son on Purple, Rainbow and Sabbath. I came home one day and my albums were all over the place and he had Raunch and Roll spinning and he was singing Giggalo and trying to howl like Jim Dandy not knowing I was listening and I was laughing because I did the same thing at ,13. He came in the kitchen and saw me and he said dad ya'll had fun in your day. That was the first time he heard BOA and I asked him how many times he listened to it and he said at least ten. A chip off the ole block. Somewhere in the late 80s Rock turned depressing. Rock was always supposed to be fun.

    I was at this show too and the following night when they shot the concert footage for Knocking at Your Backdoor music video.
    I had completely forgotten George's guest appearance - only seeing this now reminds me. Two great shows from DP.
    I was backstage for the film shoot on work experience with the crew. Too starstruck to even talk to any of DP after the show. I spent most of the show off the side of the stage behind John Lord, occasionally venturing out into the crowd for a better view.

    I was at this concert in 1984. It was the Perfect Strangers tour from memory. Gillian announced that DP had a competition for a random person to get up on stage with them to have a jam. Gillian then said the winner is a "George from Liverpool." There is a suburb in the outer west of Sydney also called Liverpool and me & me mates presumed it was some lucky dude from that area? Anyway it wasn't till I read the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald the next morning that we actually witnessed ex Beatle George Harrison on stage with Deep Purple. To be honest I think a lot people there that night thought the same thing....

    @NonStopRocker, as a guitarist (Jazz and classical background), I can say that George had the stuff. And yes, he could keep up with the best of them, from anticipating Beck's fusion (Old Brown Shoe), soul (Pure Smokey), Quiet Storm (Something, T'il There Was You), roadhouse (One After 909). And that's not even mentioning his slide work. Take a listen and look at George's last run at the closing: riffing with the best of them, indeed.

It wasn't a matter of who showed who up, I mean just the idea that those completely different musicians can actually play on the same stage and have fun...that was enough for me to enjoy it. It was a DP concert and Harrison just appeared for one of the encores (from memory) - introduced as someone who had won a competition to play on stage with DP. He was 'George from Liverpool' (there is also a suburb of Sydney with the same name, so a clever twist). Only a very brief time on stage, I recognised who he was, not sure how many others did though! He was probably in Australia for one of the F1 Grand Prixs.

    Strangeone: Harrison received a significant music award as a solo artist in December 1992, when he became the first recipient of the Billboard Century Award - presented to music artists for significant bodies of work.[169] The minor planet 4149, discovered on 9 March 1984 by B. A. Skiff at the Anderson Mesa Station of the Lowell Observatory, was named after Harrison. In 2003, Harrison was ranked 21st in Rolling Stone's list of The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Remainder from 2003 Rolling Stone 100 greatest guitarist of all time comments on #21, George Harrison:
    John Lennon and Paul McCartney dominated the Beatles' revolutionary course through 1960s pop, but Harrison defined the musical character of those innovations in his explorations of studio technology, tonal color and Indian scales. At the same time, he never strayed from the terse, earthy qualities of his first love, 1950s rockabilly, and his biggest idol, Sun Records star Carl Perkins.

      The Beatles are my favorite band, and George Harrison is one of my heroes. But the technical ability of Ritchie Blackmore is at another level, and as others had mention in the comments, Ritchie let George do the playing without overpowering him, no egos here.
      However, I recognize The Beatles were of the first bands playing hard or heavy songs like "Helter Skelter", "Everybody's something to hide", "I want you (she's so heavy)" and "The End".
      Ritchie Blackmore is a master guitar player and should be top 10 along: Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Gary Moore, David Gilmour, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, Rory Gallagher, Randy Rhoads.
      I also like Hank Marvin (Shadows); Don Wilson and Nokie Edwards (The Ventures), Mark Knopfler, Allan Holdsworth, Santana, John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, Paco de Lucia, Satriani, Vai, Van Halen, Malmsteen, etc...
      For acoustic check these: Leo Kottke, John Renbourn and Bert Jansch, Michael Hedges, Tommy Emmanuel, Paul Simon, and many others...
      So many great players, really should not be a competition, nobody at this level is better than other (each has a particular style) but I would recommend you to check all those players.

    • @hu9204

      Blackmore is all technique. George had his own style and he was one of the best slide guitar players. Ask Clapton.

      Being the best technical player doesn't make you the best of all guitar players, like chopping potatoes the fastest doesn't make you the greatest chef. It's creativity that does it, and George is obviously one of the best, especially when you think of his spectacular slide guitar skills. Check Behind That Locked Door, It's All For You and Cheer Down, just to mention a few. 🖖😊❤

    Les 2 groupes ont les mêmes racines . Leur évolution musicale n'a pas grand'chose en commun, mais des retrouvailles de copains, çà se fait autour de ce qui nous rassemble . Je suis sûr qu'ils se sont régalés de cette scène .

    If this is the condert I was at I think it was 1984 .I was in the front row slightly to thye left of the stage .I was pretty pissed at the time.Venue was Sydney entertainment Australia.Gillan announce that they had a lottery and the winner gets to play with the band and he announced the winner was from Liverpool (there is a suburb called Liverpool in Sydney) Out walked George Harrison ...for me to see one of the Beatles live was breathtaking .They played Im sure a couple of songs.

    Fr R.S. writeup: As the Beatles' lead guitarist, George Harrison never played an unnecessary note. In his solos and fills, he prized clarity and concision above all things. But every note made history, from the Cavern Club R&B frenzy of his breaks in "I Saw Her Standing There" to the hallucinogenic splendor of his contributions to Revolver and the matured elegance of his work on Abbey Road. innovations in his explorations of studio technology, tonal color and Indian scales.

    I think George played one of Ritchie's guitar..I can tell by the large '70's headstock.George at the time still has the white Strat he used in Concert Fof Bangladesh,he has the ex-sonic blue "Rocky" Strat,and probably a candy apple red one,but they were all oldest pre CBS strats,with small headstock.

    Blackmore is one of the few. Harrison's solo in Taxman demonstrates his amazing guitar playing The two of them together on stage is just a fabulous encounter.
