    Before the actual sound of thunder, you could hear this sort of static pop. I can tell you that that's what we call "positive/upward streamers" in meteorology. There are multiple in an area on the ground when the lightning is about to strike, but only one connects with the streamer, resulting in the actual strike. So basically, if the lightning channel had connected to the one you heard, the lightning strike could've been even closer with some bad luck!

      I played it back on VLC and slowest of speed and I can almost see the (not sure what it called) “trailer” before the discharge…I’m trying to get a snapshot of it

      Someday in around of April (if i remember correctly), we had a thunderstorm in my area during late morning, and then bam, we heard the same "clap/pop" sound in the video. The lightning was really loud, so i'm glad I covered my ears lol

    I randomly decided to watch this and I HEARD THAT NOISE BEFORE A LIGHTNING STRIKE TOO! I have no idea how close it was to me, but that was the most vicious and terrifying storm of my life. At the time it seemed like our house was almost hit by lightning, and I guess this proves it

      I’m positive I put two marks down on Google maps and the distance from where I was to the base of the building is 98 yards now granted it did hit the, I guess above the 10th or 12th floor of the building on the roof. I’m not going to math that lol 😂

      Nah. A third of a second of delay. 100 yards is a very good estimate. I was actually listening for the ~1/3rd of a second delay because I wanted to be judgmental, but walked away impressed by the accuracy.

    I, too, experienced a lightning struck at close range. There was a little electronic sound that sounds familiar to the games. The sound came like a second or so.

      That happened to me in Houston when I was a kid lightning bolt stroke right outside of our condo and it sounded like when you unplugged an old tube TV while it was on. Weird sound.

    Yep, been there myself. So close I could feel the heat from the bolt. My close strike was back in 2012. Bolt hit somewhere close by my apartment, I was on the door step filming and next thing I know there is a flash, a loud crack, and I'm running inside about to piss my pants from laughing so hard. 😅 fun night. 🤣

    in my experience about really close lightning, that short “pop” sound before the actual lightning sound is from your electronic releasing a short static electricity caused by the lightning, and one of the example is your phone releasing its static electricity to your hands and actually shocks you (happens to me), so don’t hold your phone or any electric devices when there’s a really close lightning around you

    Ony time there was a lightning strike 4 houses to the right of where I live like 20 yards away you could feel the ground shaking

      I like to shoot these for long-distance lightning shots but that is the first time in my life that I’ve ever had one that close.

    A 100 yards? According to my calculations the lightening hit that building 3/4 a mile away. Excellent catch 👍

      Nope sorry if the metal fence Wasn’t blocking my apartment from the bank building it is 100 yards to the outside of the building. The building is 12 stories so not sure you can figure that into the calculations or not

      The rule of thumb is lightning to thunder is 5 seconds = 1 mile. That was close, it looks like it hit the building.

    Did you record this for ASMR sleep sounds? I recognize this exact sound of rain and thunder. I use to have really bad anxiety, I still do. I turned a particular rain video on and slept in the fetal position every night.

    I also experience a lightning strike near me, much closer than yours about 20 meters away. I didn't hear the static pop cause I was in a car

    It looks like the lightning hit the tall building, which is more like 600 ft away. However, the thunder, being instantaneous, says otherwise. Is there any reason?

      It indeed did. it hit the LTE node on the top of the building

      I actually did and I could feel the hairs on my head my arms going stiff. The funny thing about it is I thought I had the door cracked when I went to open the door I actually hit my head but I cut it off before then lol

It's been often said that one can feel the buildup of static electricity before lightning strikes nearby, but this is not generally elaborated, i.e. by how much time. Would you say you felt this effect before the strike? If so, do you think you could approximate the time interval?

      @@patcola7335 we unfortunately get bad storms all year. In Texas we just wait 15 minutes for the weather to change. Thursday and Friday we had snow/ice and today it got up to 62F

      So I measured on google maps and it says 460 yards but it’s also a 9 story building where it hit the LTE node.
