Perfect intro. Hear that track, see that 24v and say "oh...shit." And that engine sounds soo good. Hell, it sounded great in my old 626 automatic with the stock exhaust. It sounds heavenly with a good exhaust. I'm considering this swap. J-spec KL-ZE engines on eBay for 600 bucks.
I think P6Lewis spent around 3k on his swap, mine will probably be closer to 4-5 when I'm done, but it depends on how many nice parts you get. You could do it with all junkyard parts cheaper, obviously. Not sure on the 1/4 times, we never go to the strip, only road courses. I'd guess somewhere in the 14's depending on driver/launch. It doesn't put down an inordinate amount of power, it's just a fun motor, and the car still will melt your face in the corners, which is what we cared about. ;)
@g151nilly Pretty sure that he didn't have to do anything extra for the ECU to work with the manual. The ECU is running the engine and that's it. He's still got the Protege ECU running the dash, cluster and stuff. The connectors for the auto trans are just left unplugged and it doesn't know the difference.
This is just brilliant. Grew up with a 98 626 V6. The KL is a glorious little engine. I would love to put one in my P5. Do you have a build thread for the swap? Curious about engine and tranny mounts, dash wiring, the basics . . . BTW, I bow before you. Truly impressive.
The KLZE will have a straight neck IM. There's some debate over whether or not the ZE's ever came with a curved neck IM. Unless you want the curved neck for fitment issues (not a concern on an MX6), it won't flow as well as the straight neck. A ported KLG4 manifold is supposed to flow the best out of all of them without going custom. Good luck, and feel free to ask questions. You can google "klg4 manifold xtremethings" for more info as well.
Can the KLDE sound like this? Or do the ZE and DE have their own specific sound? I'm not a Probe/626/MX6 guru, still have more to learn. Got my Probe GT not too long ago.
This is a KLDE. The ZE should technically sound a bit higher pitched, since it's higher compression, but I'm not sure what the conversion is between compression ratio and Hz (or if there is one). I think anyone would be hard pressed to tell them apart based solely on the sound, ignoring exhaust differences. Congrats on your new car, I'm sure you'll love it! :D
@phaethon42 Thanks, man! Watch out for those 600$ "KLZE's" with the curve neck intake mani. You want the straight neck for a real ZE (intake manifold is still no guarantee, though), which will be more like 1250. Do enough research to know what you're getting before you buy one, those importers are a tricky bunch. I know you won't regret a ZE swap, though! ;)
does the KL swap need any modifications does it bolt on the same mounts of the protege and can you use the mazda mliienium supercharged motor for a swap
Hey I was wondering if you were running a MAF converter? That doesn't look like the stock super restrictive torpedo MAF, I've always thought it was robbing 10-20 hp. I'm getting ready to put a KL in my 93 BG hatchback
Indeed I was running a KL47 MAF. However, I was running a KL47 ECU and wiring harness from a 95 Millenia. I can't remember if it was OBD1 or OBD2. But basically the ECU and motor was setup to run like a Millenia. This setup was 169 on the dyno and worked very well. Best of luck with your KL swap, mate!
i have a 2003 lx which i think would make a nice sleeper if i did the swap, in your opinion would it be worth the time and money? would i need any custom mods to make it work?
I have a P5 ...The engine is currently the original. All I have is the K&N "true" cold air intake. And the OEM mazdaspeed exhaust. Much nicer than the normal oem. But my engine has 140k and I'm wanting more power. I'm thinking about gutting the entire car and replacing everything with a mazdaspeed 3. A lot of people talk about how the mazdaspeed 3 has higher compression yadda yadda it won't work yadda yadda...but my thing is...switching everything! It will look like a P5 but I'm talking about motor transmission wiring computer everything. I've yet to measure the cluster to see if a MS3 cluster will fit into the dash of a P5 if it can then it would be awesome. The protégé is a lot lighter than a MS3 and if I could find one that has been rear ended for a donor car that I think would be perfect...please comment. .no calling me names or making fun cause this is the first time I have ever considered doing a swap.
alan stepp If this is your first swap you're taking on an epically large project and I would say stick to the FS-DE or go with a KL swap. The KL swap in 90% bolt in affair into a Protege. If you plan to swap an MZR Disi into your Protege bear in mind you'll need a ton of custom parts like motor mounts, axles, downpipe, intercooler piping, and the wiring for the ECU and dash cluster will be a pain. But I believe someone in Puerto Rico has a Protege MZR swap already done, but those Puerto Ricans are awesome at swaps. Best of luck ps- I've since parted out and sold this silver P5 and am driving a modded MS6 now.
I don't know what you was doing to cause that issue. I dog the **** out of my motor and it is at 148K. No issues at all. But I keep clean oil and all fluids fresh too.
Troy Parkhurst It's very common for the KL Probe/MX6 guys to use the turbo kit from eBay with a T3/T4 turbo setup. You may be able to use your OE turbo. But you need to do a lot of research since you're talking about going from the 4-cylinder FS-DE to the V6 KL. Best of luck.
Hi there i drive a mazda mx6 i'd just like to know what do you call the coating that looks like granite or w.e i saw a civic that had that as well and would appreciate the help man thanx.the black coating at the start of the vid just in case XD.props man.Oh and btw people that say this is slow i can keep up with a golf6 gti and my car is 20 years older so don't comment too fast cars usually look slow.cheers and thank you
im wanting to do this swap what are some things i need to know will the engine and trans bolt in will the stock axles work do i need to change the wiring harness and ecu or just the ecu
sorry but yeah to slow....and really you are not showing the the all entire car with the engine on it.....so i think you are trying to get views......nice car tho....i have the same one..
This videos going to end up with 1 million views all from me
looked this up after watching videos of vw Vr6 swaps into older Golfs LOL! great work!

Safe to say I was pleasantly surprised! Sounds excellent!

I know it takes a lot of work, but I think my first swap is gonna be the kl . So much better than the fsde
Thanks for your response bro. The car sounds great.

@g151nilly OBX headers > catless > CorkSport Power Series exhaust for the P5 w/ resonator. The KL 47 ECU is from a Millenia.
@greggregburger the old escorts are on the same platform as the protege, so if the zx2 is also it would be the same as this swap in the vid.
Sounds great I need this setup on my p5
amazing, i have mazda 323bj and im going to upgrade it, damn it is sweer ride you got :D
"Good" is a relative term. What are you looking for, outright power? Easier fit in a Protege engine bay?
This sounds amaaazing!
Can the KLDE sound like this? Or do the ZE and DE have their own specific sound? I'm not a Probe/626/MX6 guru, still have more to learn. Got my Probe GT not too long ago.
I’ve been thinking of KL swapping my Protege
Can someone tell me what advantages the KLG4 has over the KLDE?
Amazing bro can't wait to do this to my P5 or 00 Sport20 converted LX

all kl pretty much sound like this as long as you have a equal length header, or stock header and y pipe.
What's with the 2nd gear bog
That sucks... Can't you use the 5 speed from the svt contour?
Im looking for as much horsepower in N/A MX6 i thought( KLZE KL31) were curved necks but your saying beware KLZE curved necks...
Hey not to bother you but im finding out allot about the KL motor. What do you mean straight neck i thought the curved necks were good?
@phaethon42 Thanks, man! Watch out for those 600$ "KLZE's" with the curve neck intake mani. And I know if I get a MS3 and just gut it it would be lighter...but..I have two little daughters and they need a place to sit lol

I don't know a lot about steering wheel swapping, but does anyone know if a Protege wheel can be swapped in a Probe?
I'd like my protege to sound a bit louder, not crappy garbage loud, more like something to enhance the engine revs.
gizz in me trouserz nuff said... also, i own a protege.. now you got me thinkin
Is this the mazdaspeed or is it the es?
@g151nilly same manual tranny in the probe gt , mx3 and or mx6 v6.
@knobcheese69 Thanks for the kind words. It was posted less than 24 hours ago, that's why there's 33 views. :p
Would this swap work for a protege sedan?
100% yes
It would be the same I have tons of rare kl parts for sale if interested
I've got a 2003 mazdaspeed protege, bent rod spun bearing. Usual Mazda. Can I do this swap and keep my turbo?
I don't know what you was doing to cause that issue. I dog the **** out of my motor and it is at 148K. No issues at all. But I keep clean oil and all fluids fresh too.
And an answer if you could get a hold of a miliumS that are supercharged.

my mp5 is automatic,I have to replace my transmission for the mx-6 too

Its truck bed coating
I'm not familiar with that platform. I'm sure there are zx2 forums, and I'd check those out if I were you. Good luck!
same engine from my mx6 ohhh i love it im gonna put this in my girls protege
Ok! Thanks buddy i will!!
What's the gas mileage with the KL engine in the Protege5?
Jee Nou Xiong about 26mpg
I love how that engine sounds fuck! >W
are you using the stock Protege5 transmission or is it also a swap, and what kind?
+Nomar Igartua It's a Mazda G-series 5 speed from the Probe GT/MX-6. They came from the factory with the USDM variant of this KL v6.
sweet
I got that same stereo in my truck
RedbtickSHADYT high five.
It's how the stock gear ratio is.
HOLY SHEEEEET KLZW FTW!

Check out this thread for more info on that ;)
Google: "Probetalk Ultimate Transmission Thread"
that klde engines are wasted
jaj ta mui lento te despido con mi vocho, ase mas ruido que lo que corre
0 to 60 in 6 to 7 seconds my stock protege sedan does that
David Cardinal okay. Neat.
my stock protege does 0-60 in 16 seconds
Damn! All that and it STILL slow as shit.....? (Time to get a real car)
That shit is mad slow lol...
Sammy boy my license plate was "SLOW P5". If you think this is slow you should drive a stock P5 with the FS-DE. ;)
im wanting to do this swap what are some things i need to know will the engine and trans bolt in will the stock axles work do i need to change the wiring harness and ecu or just the ecu
sad all that work for nothing slow
Samuel Bermudez you should use punctuation.
sorry but yeah to slow....and really you are not showing the the all entire car with the engine on it.....so i think you are trying to get views......nice car tho....i have the same one..
Joe Joe my license plate was "SLOW P5" on this car. :)
