WE did lunch on the way to Penzance, and the service was exceptional. First they took us from the first class lounge to the train on a jitney! Then they walked us in carrying our bags. Then they took us up to the restaurant. The food was delicious and we loved every minute. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Well done GWR! The best food on an English train in my experience, though I haven't been everywhere. Thanks for a great video.
I haven't done it since 2019 when it was the Mitch Tonks menu and HST first class. Back then it was really expensive but the food was on par or better than British Airways First Class. It will be interesting to see how a cheaper menu works and if it's better or worse than before.
Just a small issue - you were not travelling on the West Coast Mainline you were travelling on the Great Western Mainline. The WCM is from Euston to Glasgow. Apart from that, you whetted my appetite to sample the GWR Pullman service.
Just like you, I went for the half-bottle of Rioja although in my case, to go with the Duck Breast rather than the Steak! The catering crew kept asking me if I fancied Steak so I assume that they had some which was coming up for its use-by date! Whilst I was waiting at Reading to join the 13:29 to Plymouth I asked the platform staff which half of the train I needed to board for the Restaurant Car, the answer being "I've got no idea. I didn't even know that it had one!" Contrary to what your route map might suggest, but confirmed by the sight of the Kennet and Avon Canal flashing past the picture window, your train turned left on departure from Reading and travelled down the Berks and Hants line to Taunton, utilising both the Westbury and the Frome cutoffs. If you really want to push the boat out, and still have room after polishing off your Chocolate Mouse (sic), you can add the Cheeseboard and a glass of lovely Port to the bill for an extra £5:00 and £5:50 respectively. For future reference, 99% of the time the Restaurant Car will be at the very rear of the train, in the carriage nearest to the buffer stops at Paddington. Hopefully your next video diary will feature the new-look "Gerald of Wales" dining train during its four-hour journey between Cardiff/Caerdydd and Holyhead/Caergybi! I look forward very much to watching it!
Great video! The food and the scenery looked great. And the silence during the "wine induced conversation" made me laugh! I very much want to make this journey when I can. Thanks👍

Yes make sure you ask which set the Pullman dining is in, It's very annoying because it's meant to be at the London end first class but sometimes is in the middle.
This is a fantastic but sadly very rare service in this country. Believe me it is worth every penny, and the staff are truly superb. Make sure you leave them a decent tip, they very much deserve it. 👍🏻🇬🇧👍🏻

I didn't mind the train. I've gone from Reading to St Austell. The main problem is that if you're not using the restaurant car there's only the trolley for food which limits things on a long journey. The trolley can run out of sandwiches.
My only gripe with these units is that it’s the comfort of these trains far from par of the old hst sets. Sure you get good food but is it worth scarficing your bum for the food?
If you can book ahead and use a discount railcard, a Standard travel ticket between Reading and Plymouth can be bought for £22 or so, giving access to the Restaurant Car if any of the 18 First Class seats are unoccupied!
Having been travelling to and from London from Newton Abbot regularly for the last couple of months for work (project now compete) looks like I’ve just missed the re-introduction of the pulman service. I would say though that I thought the first class lounge at Paddington was looking pretty tired, I note the second coffee machine is still out of order in your video. Hi mate, thanks for watching. Appreciated. I wasn’t around in those days, we’ll too young but I have heard the gap is massive in what was served then and what is served now.
I was told you couldn't do Pullman dining if you were going to Penzance, as the train divides at Plymouth. Of course you can enjoy Pullman Dining with GWR if you are travelling between London or Reading (where last orders are taken) and Cornwall! If your train consists of 2 x 5 coach IET's the Restaurant Car will usually be in the carriage nearest to the buffers at Paddington. The catering crew likes to clear the tables and wash up prior to arrival at Plymouth, where you can transfer to the front trainset by alighting from your portion and walking forward along the platform, thus continuing your journey to Penzance/Pensans. On weekdays (Mondays to Fridays) Pullman Dining is available on two trains between Plymouth North Road and London Paddington (13:15 and 18:15) with last orders being taken after departure from Exeter St. David's. Two courses cost £25 but you can add additional courses (eg a Dessert followed by a Cheeseboard) for £5 per course. It's possible to access the Restaurant Car if you hold a Standard travel ticket, subject to spare places being available, after westbound departures from Reading and eastbound departures from Exeter!
Should add the Class 800 top speed is actually 140mph (225kph) - like the Pendalino; 125 mph is their top operational speed. Such an annoyance how all the trains on UK's long distance lines (Paddington, Euston & King's Cross) are still held back
