When my parents retired they relocated to Mabou FOR THE MUSIC! Almost every home had a piano and a fiddle whether they played or not. Spontaneous house parties just spring up when talent stops by. It's one of the most special places I've been to in my life. And shout out to The Red Shoe, the heartbeat of Mabou!
I remember the young fellow with long hair and mustache as a member of the awesome Cape Breton Symphony on my very favorite John Allan Cameron Show on CTV during 1975. R.I.P., bro.
I was at this concert and was very moved by the whole experience. Jerry was a humble musician, who never outgrew his trousers; he always remembered his fans, of whom I am one, and he had a good sense of humor. I remember telling him about how, back in the old days, fiddlers were sex symbols, and why (was it the motion to and fro of the bow...) and how he laughed when he heard this. Cape Breton will never be the same without him...
For three years I have been studying the fiddle and violin artists and in my opinion no one exceeds Jerry Holland. The amazing thing about his style is he does everything wrong according to the "experts", he holds the bow wrong, he holds his left hand wrong, not straight. Aren't we glad he did it his way! No one plays more beautifully.
He came to our area in Washington State at the request of Mike Saunders, who was a member of the band I was in, Stone Circle. I think we opened for Jerry, but whatever we played was totally eclipsed by his amazing, most excellent artwork on his fiddle. RIP, Jerry, hope you’re up there jamming with the angels.
I'd like to say thank you to you Jerry for being a dear friend and mentor. Built my first house with Gerry. He was also a gifted carpenter as well as Fiddler. Miss him dearly.Jerry Jr was still a baby then. Nice to see him playing with his Dad. We must sit and talk about the ole man some day. Love and respect.
No one could every play his tune with the feeling he put into it -- it was magic. I was in the second row for this performance -- I think his bone cancer had just been discovered and there was still a lot of hope. What an incredible loss....
What a gracious and heartwarming man. I keep coming back to this to remind me why I keep struggling on to learn the fiddle. So sad we lost him, but he continues to spread joy though his tunes and recordings...
Beautiful, as always. Brought tears, not only for the beauty, but the loss of such a talented and wonderful person. I feel blessed to have been able to attend a couple of his workshops, as well as have him as a teacher at BHSFS ('04, I believe).
You bring tears to my eyes. Iv always wanted to play the fiddle. Celtic cape breton wow. Tears of celtic tears im geting and ino what I want to learn thank jerry I love your music. Peace
Master Cape Breton fiddler had a huge impact on me as a teen....always being into hard rock and metal the sound of my cranked up Marshall always drowned out the fiddle music my grandfather was playing upstairs.....when I heard jerry,it was instant love for the music.....the feel of that album was something different....something very special.....now I’m older and still love hard rock and metal.....but there’s nothing sweeter than a good set of Cape Breton tunes.....thanks jerry! RIP
When I was 10 years old, I went to see Jerry after one of his shows. He took the time to talk to an inexperienced fiddler such as myself about violin strings, technique, and how to improve. I'll never forget it. EDIT: he used Thomastik-Infeld Superflexibles, for anyone wondering.
I had the chance to talk to Johnny Cunningham in Tucson and he game me a couple of strings that he used . I also saw Jerry in late 80s at a contradance. I was mesmerized.
D: FireFrog and his playing at his best, always! He never failed to amaze us, and just come up with tunes on the fly. He had the best jokes! M: he was a totally awsome guy. my rolemodle and someone who i could look up to.

We listen to Jerry's My Cape Breton every day and dance to the reels. It makes my day so much better.

Are you the Jerry Holland who played at the Canadian American club in Boston 1966 ish?
Jerry would have been about 11 years old in 1966, but I wouldn't be surprised if he were playing there by that age. Btw, he died a few years ago now.
Dang !
I am talking about the first tune
Anyone know what the names of the songs he is playing are?
lovely - what are the second and third tunes called, anyone know?
