    Hey guys, if you're interested in how I actually captured the footage from both handhelds and RF-based systems here, be sure to click "show more" on the description. I've got a full explanation in there! There was no PC emulation involved; the only emulators were those on the handhelds that I was testing.

      No the Go is great i had a 1000 before and theGo has 16GB with expandable storage and a great screen. the only way to get more storage for a psp is by getting a M2 to microsd adapter.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, but you don't really need that much storage unless you're putting a bunch of UMD's on it, which you have to with a Go if you want to play PSP games. You don't have to with one of the other models, though you certainly can if you want to. I don't know if you saw in the video that I have 1.8GB free on my PSP, and that's on a 4GB card with all those emulators and full romsets installed. (Not every emulator available, but all the ones you see me scrolling through.) Retro games just aren't very big. UMD's are big, but you can just play UMD's off the UMD with a 2000 or 3000, which you can't do with a Go :)

    • @Lollllllz
      @Lollllllz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      however the go uses m2 that maxes out at 16gb and the 1000/2000/3000 series uses memory stick that tops out at 32gb.The screen is miles better on the go but the sliding form factor and digital only model with the go may turn off some as in my case as i never got comfortable handling the go than the 1000 .

    • @TheSampleSlayer

      I managed to get 64GB working without an issue with an M2 to microSD adaptor on my 3000; however i ran into issues with 128GB! I tried this with multiple microSD cards ruling out a fault with the microSD its self. Basically sometimes the PSP would recognise card run without issue but other times it wouldn't even show up; I'm not saying its impossible; there are videos on TH-cam with people claiming the PSP can run 256GB of storage and if read the forums people argue it back forth, but if you ask me and well lets face it most people do ;) from my experience 64GB is highest storage size you run stably on this device!

    Vita homebrew has really grown up in the time since this video came out. You can easily jailbreak any Vita running firmware up to 3.70 (which is- and may well remain- the current firmware), and once you install Adrenaline, it's pretty much a complete replacement for a modded 6.61 PSP. The only reason to use a PSP over a Vita is to dump UMDs.
    If you want to try your hand at Vita modding, buy a 2000 model, as its 1.25gb 'internal memory card' partition is plenty of room to get your system jailbroken without needing a stupid-expensive Vita memory card.

  • @shabmaster7128

    Buy a PSP Go. Seriously. Onboard 16 or 32 gigs, and a very useful form factor. It's hard to use the analog stick for long periods of time, but you don't need it if you're going retro. I can actually stick it in my pocket, which is actually a thing I do when I don't want to carry anything in my hands and means I pretty much carry it with me at all times. That's the difference to me, I'd have to think about taking the normal PSP whereas the go is already in my pocket. Throw on a screen protector and you're good.

    • @leegsy
      @leegsy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends really. I don't have the smallest hands so I prefer my 3000 PSP as it just feels more comfortable to use.

      leegsy I get it. I initially just bought the go second hand for a backup media device during business travel, but quickly started carrying it with me pretty much all the time. I've got large mitts too, the go isn't going to win any ergonomic awards for sure, but for an hour or so, it's not bad. It's just a different use case really.

    • @merouby

    Two things you didn't mention. 1--The 2000 & 3000 models also have an output for connecting your PSP to your T.V. using composite or component cables. This actually works better than you'd expect...except when some games require the screen to be flipped sideways. 2--Let's not forget about the movies/shows released on the U.M.D. format. While exact numbers aren't clear, approximately 700 (probably more) movies covering all genres was released in North America for the PSP. Great little handheld console for sure.

  • @snoozy04
    @snoozy04 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The PSP is still my favorite handheld. It's not too big, not too small, powerful enough to play retro games like PS1, GBA, Genesis, SNES, etc...and great PSP library and graphics.
    Many handheld emulator knock offs from China pale in comparison to PSP's emulation and library, and the PSP came out in 2005!

  • @LynxxLancer
    @LynxxLancer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The go is still the best if you want an emulation machine. The screen is simply sharp and the form factor is very portable unlike the previous model.

  • @merouby
    @merouby 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Disagree about the Go. The Go came with a built-in 16GB of storage and there is an aftermarket internally-mounted microsd-to-m2 adapter allowing you to put hundreds of GBs of microsd to expand that. Coupled with the fact it's the only PSP with Bluetooth (allowing both PS3 Dualshock controllers and wireless headphones to work) to boot makes it worth it when you consider the portability factor of having your whole game library on the go. Get a PSPGo while you can as prices are going up.

      I dont own a PSP Go but its the most interessting of the PSPs as it can fit super easy into your pocket which i find is a big + The only 2 things that bother me about PSP go is the little smaller screen and that it doesnt use MINI USB but some Costum adapter similar to the PS Vita 1000.

    "Some people would say that Sony's PSP was a failure as a handheld gaming system"
    >8th highest selling console of all time, ahead of the NES, SNES, GBA, N64, 3DS, PS4, Genesis, Atari 2600, Xbox and Gamecube
    The Xbox 360 sold 84mil. The PSP sold 82mil. That is anything but a failure. Even the PS1 only sold 100mil.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was trounced by the competition. Game systems don't exist in a vacuum.

    • @toxy3580
      @toxy3580 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Selling 82 million units is hardly trounced. The DS did twice as well yes, but the DS did better than all but the PS2. If the PSP was a failure then so was the SNES, PS3 etc. Getting trounced is selling 3.5 mil like the wonderswan vs the gameboy's 120 mil.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The SNES outsold the Genesis/Megadrive by 19 million units, so I'm not sure what you're getting at there, . The PS3 was outsold by the Xbox 360 by less than 200,000 units worldwide - or about 0.4%. Still, some *do* consider that a failure given the margin the PS2 had over the original Xbox and GameCube. The DS outsold the PSP by 2 to 1, and 3 to 1 outside of Japan. That's not something for Sony to break out the champagne over.

    • @TheIzzyNobreShow
      @TheIzzyNobreShow 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I agree, Toxy. Loved the video but this notion that the PSP was a failure is really, really odd to me. More global sales than both the Genesis AND the SNES put together is hardly a "failure".

    • @toxy3580
      @toxy3580 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm getting at the PSP outselling all of those... it's not hard to figure out.
      "That's not something for Sony to break out the champagne over"
      nor is the Xbox 360 nearly getting outsold by the PSP anything to break champagne over if the PSP is apparently such a failure.
      "The DS outsold the PSP by 2 to 1,"
      did you actually read what I wrote? I just said the PSP sold 82 million and the DS sold double. And then you just copied it.
      "The SNES outsold the Genesis/Megadrive by 19 million units"
      and the PSP outsold the SNES by 30 million.
      guess the SNES was a failure then. So was the NES, that's only 60 million. GBA? Only 81 million, less than the PSP.
      Again, a failure I assume?

  • @timmadone8930

    Two things that I didn't hear get mentioned. 1--There is no region code for games on UMD discs. That extends the library of physical games to well over a thousand titles. 2--The 2000 & 3000 models can be hooked up to your TV with a composite or component cable.

    For not a lot more money you can hunt down a PS Vita on ebay, get it running homebrew emulators and adrenaline and has all the content of the vita with the added benefit of a PSP pretty much living inside of it. You also get dual analog sticks and can map the touchpad on the back to work as R2 and L2 for the later PSX titles.

    I have the PSP 2004 model, Final Fantasy limited edition silver. I bought it during the golden era of the PSP and loved the countless hours playing it. So many great games there! It was also at that time that the PSP could also serve as a smart device, the homebrews enabled taking notes, browsing servers, emulation, and whatever else you could think of at the time. It was a really powerful hand-held. I didn't bother much with emulation, but I did have a few PS1 and NES/SNES games on it that I really liked (Mario, Soul Reaver, DOOM, Quake II - that sort of stuff).

    There's one more reason to get the 3000 model. You can play every game through composite video output, which is a godsend for anyone still rocking a CRT TV. The 2000 model only allowed you to play PS1 games through composite, and everything else through component.
    And there actually is one reason to get the Go. You can play with the DS3 controller.

      Didn't realize that, thanks for the info! Do the composite cables actually output full screen? The component cables do not, which is a bummer. (I had to zoom all the footage for the video; the PSP seems not to scale the image at all when outputting over component.)

    • @AmartharDrakestone
      @AmartharDrakestone 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they don't. You can only go full screen on PS1 games and some emulators (don't remember which, though). A decent way for recording PSP footage is RemoteJoyLite, which can output PSP's video signal through USB to your PC.

    PSP was really ahead of it's time. UMDs allowed for large game capacities and at the time you could get damn near the graphical ability of the PS2 in your hand. Plus the Ultrawide aspect ratio which is making a comeback these days made for a better mobile experience. Just the PSP suffered bad battery life and other design flaws that kept it from becoming bigger than the inferior Nintendo DS at the time.

    I've had my PSP-3000 since 2009 and it still plays some of my favorite games pretty well. My only issue with it is the fact that the battery has this weird problem where it won't charge unless I turn on the PSP without the battery and then put the battery in once it's charged. But other than that, it's really great and was definitely ahead of its time for a handheld!

    Psp 3000 has one more capability you didn't mention. The area under the control surfaces has been deepened rather then being flat like the 1000 and 2000. Meaning that playing fighting games is a hell of alot easier then the previous models. The psp go removes this due to how thin the control area is. Not sure about the psp street

    Agreed! I've helped design handhelds and built my own from scratch, but you know -- the PSP was mass produced and still widely available, very cheaply; aside from emus, it also has a healthy open source library including PDF readers and video players, or you can use a video transcoder to translate a video into a format the PSP can hardware decode. So, if you're going on a trip or to a sandy beach, where a device could get stolen or smashed or is otherwise at risk.. take a PSP - they're _great_, and also cheap to replace. Read ebooks, watch movies, play retro games. Big win. Also, fun platform to code for.

    I actually much prefer the PSP GO over the 2000/3000, the main reason for this was at the time, the memory sticks for those models were very expensive. The GO has 16GB of onboard storage, which is plenty for all the emulators and emulation titles you could want, while also leaving enough room for several PSP games. I was never a fan of the UMD system to begin with because it's a spinning disc in a mobile system, just like Hard Drives can be damaged by bumps or drops, it always bothered me that it was such a loose mechanical make up.
    I think that today, the deciding factor in whether or not you should get a GO or 2000/3000 would be hand size, if you have large hands then the GO will not be very fun to hold, and could drive you completely away from playing it just for this simple fact. The 2000/3000 models are very nice in the hands no matter if they're large or small.
    Great video, I really like your retro review content! Keep making these interesting videos so that I can nostalgia trip during bad days :D

    I had a PSP 2000, really nice system in terms of power, but failed hard in the reliability department. Basically everyone I know who's had a PSP had it die on them. I never even dropped mine, but the case is cracked, one of the hinges is broken, and I can't even turn it on because the on/off switch thinks it is always in the locked position!
    Disks on a handheld were a really dumb idea too, they would get scratched up just playing because of dust getting stuck inside that little case thingie.

    • @DannyCD
      @DannyCD 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had reliability issues with the PSP 2000 also. I agree too that it was really nice, I had bought two red colored ones for one specific reason; the damn analog stick kept breaking on it. It would stop working properly plus it would input movements on its own. It drove me crazy. I finally gave up on the PSP because of that and I didn't want to use a PSP 1000 because it was too bulky. The 3000 is hackable but usually not permanently, I prefer it to be permanently hacked rather than always having to boot up into the hacked mode so I didn't bother with it. As for the PSP Go, don't like it at all.

      I use Pro CFW and I have to run it everytime I turn my PSP on. It takes like 10 seconds to install and for the PSP to reboot so it's not an issue really.
      I never run UMDs on my PSP, just PS1 e-boots and PSP ISOs, as well as some emulators.

  • @corsinivideos

    Nice video, good roundup. Although completely disagree about the PSP Go. I bought one for emulation and its perfect. Much prefer it to the 1/2/3000 for one huge reason you overlook and that it is far more compact and fits perfectly in a pocket. The PSP Go display also has a slightly higher pixel density than the other PSPs due to its smaller but same resolution display. I also see absolutely no reason at all why anyone would want to carry UMD discs when every title is available as ripped ISO and plays exactly the same as the original, no advantage to having a umd disc whirling around in your machine imo if you dont need it.

  • @wagner52169
    @wagner52169 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great video. I agree that one's first PSP should be a 2000 or 3000; however, if you become a fanboy of the system, like me, then you'll want to check out the PSP Go. It can be soft-modded like the others and plays all the same emulators. It is also easy to load files on it by connecting it to a PC - and as the video mentions you can rip the UMD discs after you've modded a psp and therefore load your backups onto the PSP Go (no need for the playstation store). It also has AV out, like the 2000 and 3000 so you can connect it to a TV with either composite or component cables. One thing it does that the 2000 and 3000 do not is allow you to use a Bluetooth connection to use of Dual Shock 3 controller. I have the PSP Go Cradle that's hooked up to my TV and I use a Dual Shock controller to play emulators and PSP games. I also have a clip on my Dual Shock Controller that I can attach the PSP Go to and play it using the controller and the PSP Go Screen. The PSP Go is also smaller and can easily fit in one's pocket. I think of it as a much more portable version of the Switch (with tons more games). So, there are my reasons why I think the PSP Go should be your second PSP (if you're so inclined).

I still have my PSP 100 and use it often. also have a darth vader 2000 and an ever so beautiful green metal gear solid PSP .
    The only bad thing I can think of when it comes to the PSP is it is a bit dubious in build quality at times. UMD doors just popping off when you press the open button, housings cracking from a 2 foot drop things like that. I have seen these first hand by the way.

    I would be more clear in the video that the PSP was a failure ONLY to unseat the Nintendo. I don' think 80+ million units sold is a failure (about same units as PS4 to date!). The DS was one of those products that sold a freakishly large amount of units - so the PSP numbers next to it might look not so good, but in reality they were BOTH successes. I wouldn't say the PSP just died out really quickly, it sold pretty well in the US for over 5 years.

Despite this they're cheap as chips and are easily modded. I just got a 1000 for $20 and that includes shipping. 2000s will run about $5-10 more. • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I didn't really forget it, I made the decision that it just wouldn't mean much to my American viewers (approximately 98% of my viewers are based in the USA according to TH-cam). It's a regional variant that doesn't ever really turn up here - I don't think it sold well even in Europe. I think I mentioned there being four "main" models, which leaves room for variants. If I didn't, it's in the script, so I should have. I suppose I could have just mentioned the E1000 specifically and the fact that you should probably avoid it if you run across one (I wouldn't recommend it).
      btw Wangan Midnight *is* great, but you do have to get used to the controls. The series (going back to its Shutouko Battle roots) has controls that feel strangely laggy, but in a way that's obviously intentional. So you really need to get used to steering a little bit in advance of when you'd normally think you would. Every car feels a little bit like a boat on water. Still, it is amazing how realistic it is - they actually mapped every single inch of those roads, and even the road markings are dead on accurate. I do prefer the Shutouko Battle games - Wangan Midnight was made into an arcade game so it's a bit simplified - but hey, I take what I can get on a handheld.

    One playful advantage of the first PSP (the so called Phat) was the IR blaster. Players were coding remote scripts for it.
    And secondly, now there is an adapter that allows players to use microSD cards with the PSP. I have 64gb on mine, carrying around about 250 games, from AAA like GTA to minis and puzzlers. The console only sees 256 games and apps in total, but if you have a few emulators you can access as many ROMs as you please.

    Another advantage the "regular" psp models have over the GO: they can be used with cheap microSD cards instead of the expensive MS pro Duo sticks. All you need is a $4 adapter called "CR-5400". As far as I know CFWs can use at least use 2 x 128Gb cards using that adapter.

I don't there's anything wrong with locating the ISO's from another source if you own or acquire the UMD's too ;). Loading ISO's from internal storage is superior for load times and convenience; whilst using UMD's are good for nostalgia and novelty purposes. But each to their own.

      megasquals The psp go is awful especially it's design with the slide out screen and cramped feel.The sliding mechanism of the psp go screen has a ribbon cable that can break. It can't play your physical umd psp collection that totally sucks in my opinion.The psp go is garbage no wonder it failed.

      yodagamer1 Psp go can't play physical psp umd games and breaks easily because it's fragile.

      Paul Barnes I have an old psp with a broken screen. With a modded psp you can rip your disc and just transfer it to a psp go. It's a pain, but the form factor makes it worth it

      Paul Barnes you bring some good points, but I think the size is a preference for some. Also, I have a few devices with a sliding mechanism and none of them have broken. Perhaps the Go isn't appropriate for those who find it difficult to maintain their belongings. It's not worth getting wound up about though, if people don't want the Go based on opinions mentioned in the video, it only helps make them cheaper in the second hand market.

    But since it was hacked it's the best emulating machine out there

      The 3DS was hacked to an even deeper and total level: full control of the whole system from boot, giving ability to control, modify and customize about anything on the machine...
      You can even blindly accept any future update (2 more happened last september and december of 2019) from Nintendo with the pleasing confidence that no firmware update they can throw at you will ever be able to break the hack!

    I love using my psp. I am also using a micro sd to memory stick pro duo adapter with a 32gb card. This is a neat little adapter allowing you to have tons of storage. I really need to get me a psp 2000 model since my slims glossy back is starting to peel off from use.

      PSP 2000 gave me issues with its analog stick all the time so beware, it's not 100% reliable. It's also flimsy. Shame though because I really liked the PSP 2000.

    The PSP GO is great for connecting to your HDTV via component and then using its BLUETOOTH to connect a PS3 controller to it, essentially making the portable system into a "docked" home console. You can even buy a cradle for it that keeps it charged while you play games on it in this situation. Sony basically did first what Nintendo eventually did with the SWITCH, though not as slick and powerful, they were first to the punch at making a portable/home console. Out of all the versions of the PSP, only the PSP GO can let you kick-it in a comfortable chair with your head back and play downloaded PSP games and classic emulators in 480p on your HD flat panel with a PS3 controller in hand. Very nice!
    The 2000 and the 3000 also can be connected to your HDTV but do NOT allow you to bluetooth a PS3 controller to them. Therefore, you must hold the system in your hands and use it as the controller with the a/v cable and power cord hanging off the sides which is okay but not as convenient as the PSP GO.
