  • In this video we cover why you may want to consider installing a solenoid cover with a built in start
    button on your Evolution big twin powered HD motorcycle.
    **PLEASE NOTE: In this video I said to disconnect the Positive (+) lead from the battery. I meant to say Negative (-). You can disconnect the positive lead but please take care to not short the wrench to the ground post or anything metal on the bike. If in doubt - pull the Negative (-) lead first. **
    As always safety 1st and make sure to disconnect the negative (-) lead of your battery and wear eye protection. Also if you go to use this button please make sure your motorcycle in in neutral!
    Any efforts to install and use one of these solenoid covers is the sole obligation and responsibility of the individual(s) installing and/or attempting to use said item.

    That I have had the click of dread when i was 30 minutes from home. Yes I will be putting a manual starter button on after watching this. Great advice!

    Thank you. I specifically came looking for the "Myth Buster" section, and you covered it. You also helped me in another starter video. Thank you and very informative.

    I put these on all my Harleys immediately. The stock Bosch-style relay and starter button work pretty well, but the relays aren't immortal. With the cover I can get home and swap relays later. BTW auto stores carry heavy duty relays of the same type. Bring your old one and look at the bottom to verify the contacts match. BWD (car parts) make a good heavy duty relay socket with pigtail.

    Great video bro. Thanks , I already replaced the plunger and starter relay. So far it’s ok. But I’m gonna get the switch. I didn’t replace the copper contacts because it looks like I have to remove the starter to do it right. I was just in the primary replacing the stator. Thanks again!!!!

    This is a Very Good and informative Video...Make sure you heed his Suggestions on the install...that solenoid shaft will press back making putting the Cover back on a bit tricky...My suggestion here is to just place a finger dab or two of wd40 or cooking oil on the Gasket and the cover...holding cover straight and over the shaft end [in line with button, and Holes in line with housing push cover straight on, lining up holes. hold cover with one hand while hand inserting screws Torq tighten screws each one gradually...DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. Happy Riding.

    Excellent tutorial. Will this style mechanical plunger help if the starter shaft/gear doesn't pop out and engage with the ring gear and just spins freely every one in 20 starts or so? Every so often I push the starter button and all I hear is the starter spinning free. I honestly don't feel like removing the primary cover and the oil tank on my 2003 Softail to install a new starter. I've had the primary cover and oil tank off too many times last year. Thank you.

      Hi Rob- This cover should, in theory, help with your situation as it is a manual means of engaging the starter gear. However it is an odd problem in that the starter does spin w/o the gear engaging. As such I cannot guarantee it will work but if I were in your shoes I'd try it as you've really nothing to lose.

      It's not possible for the solenoid to move far enough to actuate the starter without moving the PINION into engagement with the RING gear, but when the starter spins that's the STARTER CLUTCH not engaging.
      The clutch requires a starter removal to replace. Use a quality clutch like All Balls (clutch internals vary, the best are all steel while the cheaper style use a plastic spider. While every local auto starter shop can rebuild these Denso OSGR Light Duty starters in their sleep (they're on millions of cars and trucks) the cost of a clutch plus the starter contact kit (you will need it and they're so inexpensive it's silly not to replace them any time the starter is removed from a Harley) is over half the cost of a new aftermarket starter so you may as well replace the starter. I'm a mechanic so I clean my commutators and replace contacts and clutch but that's too much hassle for most people.
      Shop labor plus parts is why motorcycle shops rarely repair customer starters and I don't either. I do collect dead starters and won't hesitate to repair 'em for personal use. BTW the end housing and minor parts are the important differences between Harley versions and I've converted big twin to Sporty starters using parts from my stash. Knowing this may save money if cash is tight. Here's one of several posts I made on the subject with pics and useful links: www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52178

    I've got that same old style torque wrench that is hanging up behind you.

      I think, if memory serves me correctly, that those are a couple of Wilmar (today known as Performance Tools) beam style torque wrenches.

    I can’t seem to find a video that has the problem that I’m experiencing on my Harley. Sometimes when I engage the starter and I release the button on the handle bar the starter keeps turning and makes a terrible noise. It’s not engaged it just sounds like the gear is still attached to the fly wheel. Sometimes it takes a few seconds and it releases. And it’s quiet again anybody have any ideas would greatly be appreciated thanks

    • @Theoriginalmalcontentcorner
      @Theoriginalmalcontentcorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Alan. So what you have is starter run on- the button is released but the starter remains running. This can be caused by a few things so here is how I would approach the problem: 1.) Find the solenoid wire. It is usually a plug and blade affair. When the problem presents itself pull the wire. If the problem goes away, I would test it again. Pulling the wire removes the solenoid engagement circuit from the equation. If that is the problem child then you may have a sticky relay, start switch or any other item from that wire back (see my video on the click of dread). If that DOESN'T take care of it then you may have a sticky solenoid. One of my viewers said theirs was so gunked up with grease that they were having the click of dread issue. You may have the other problem- it won't release. I'd pull the solenoid plunger and see how it looks in the housing. Is the housing filthy with old grease and copper particles? Since you pulled the plunger, you might as well clean it out (don't use carb cleaner but electronics cleaner), regrease the stub shaft and see how it behaves after that. Beyond that you'll probably have to pull the starter as it may have a bad bendix gear that won't release or release quickly. Hope that helps.

      Thank you John I appreciate your quick response. I dread having to remove the starter. I’m going to try to get to the solenoid by removing the rear pipe and opening the back cover.

    • @Theoriginalmalcontentcorner
      @Theoriginalmalcontentcorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No problem, Alan. I like trying to help people troubleshoot their issues. Sorry you have to pull the rear pipe to get into the solenoid housing but it is a place to start. And yes...HD starters are a PAIN to pull. Best of luck. Let me know how it all works out if you think of it.

    No, no, no, NO! You disconnect the NEGATIVE, aka, the ground wire on the battery first. because nearly every vehicle built in the last 100 years is a negative ground system. Pulling the positive cable runs the risk of shorting your wrench to the frame which produces a bright light and often a bit of cursing. Pull the negative cable and you'll be safer and the air will be less abused. Don't ask me how I know...

    • @Theoriginalmalcontentcorner
      @Theoriginalmalcontentcorner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Main thing is that the viewer disconnect the battery. You are correct- negative is the way to go however if one is careful the situation you ran into shouldn't be much of an issue. Main thing I wanted to make a point of is that the battery IS disconnected!!

      Malcontent corner where you buy the button at

    • @Theoriginalmalcontentcorner
      @Theoriginalmalcontentcorner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

       @ Timothy Cartrette : My first recommendation would be to see if your local, independent M/C repair shop has any in stock. Failing that you can typically buy this item from retailers such as J&P Cycle, Summit Racing or even Ebay just to name a few. I highly recommend J&P cycle as a first choice for M/C parts as they have always been a great company to deal with, IMO. As a side note: I've used Summit for auto parts and have had a great experience with them as well. Hope that helps!!

    9/32 socket = 7.144 mm. The starters are japanese or german and use metric bolts/screws...
    Please use a 7mm socket - its still loose - but just that tad better !

    no go on the BUTTON . . .ok guys figured this out - you will not believe this:
    bought starter back up button and that is what was causing all my short problems. . .
    Has there been any problems with these push buttons shorting to ground..???
    ever since i put on: push caused the blows out the 15 fuse for all my lights, speedometer, odometer and turn signals.
    recommend just keeping long wire in your pack to jump if you need too NOT adding the button.

    • @Theoriginalmalcontentcorner
      @Theoriginalmalcontentcorner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Only way it should short to ground is if there is electrical connection between the copper contact ring and the end of the plunger itself. Methinks you got more going on.
