Your info on the solenoid was spot on. My oil burner was only burning for a few minutes and then turned off, replaced the solenoid and everything is working normal. Thank you a lot, your info helped me a lot, especially because it's -20C here right now 😅😅
Thank you so much for doing a great video. Might have been made seven years ago but still totally valid. Really clear and pitched at just the right levels for those who are happy to try and fix things themselves but just need that insight into how things like this work.
This short video is perfect for people who have some idea but were a little scared of fiddling. Just a shout out for fixing my boiler today bro! Thanks!
On the coldest day of the year. 4 hours of servicing fault eliminating provided no solution. I had a tea break and found your video (after watching 6 others). Your tip about the pump solenoid failing after 2 minutes due to dodgy coil heating up and breaking contact . Swapped it from my boiler spares box and great joy we are warm again. Many thanks excellent explanation well done.
Very helpful, many thanks! As a gas boiler specialist who's just bought a house with an oil boiler, this has filled in quite a few blanks about oil boilers for me.
Magic eye is a photocell just so people know what to look for at the merchants. Transformer produces 30 to 50 thousand volts for ignition of the atomomised fuel/air mixture but with a low amperage so it is less lightly to seriously harm or kill. The 220 to 240 volt supply to burner is much more dangerous as it can have anywhere from 0.1 milliamps amps and 3 amps can be enough to light up your insides and youd be history. It takes only 100mA to stop your heart. It's a good video guide and I'll recommend it for others to watch👍 Always replace bearings. Solenoid coil slips over the brass solenoid valve stem. Depending on the size of the jet....psi for diesel is 140 psi and 90 psi upwards for kerosene.
I'm considering doing an oil boiler maintenance course. I didn't have a clue what they were about but this video gave me an understanding. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant video, fixed my Rayburn 440 by replacing the oil pump solenoid, had one lying around in the "stores". Saved me a Christmas and Covid call out! Stay safe and thanks again!
Spot on! Exactly what I needed. Clear troubleshooting advice which led me to the problem with my boiler. Turned out to be an easy fix thanks to Sebastian Hibbert. I watched at least 5 other videos (very little to no help) before I found this one. Thank you!
Thank you for the video... mine was starting and stopping after a few minutes.. I needed the coil on the fuel pump... got it going just in time for Christmas ... thank you again
Very useful video, especially late at night when all the engineers are in bed. This helped me to get my burner running again ( jammed fan blade )Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks very helpfull! It would appear I had a problem with a clogged up oil pump filter and a dirty photocell sensor. The burner is now back up and running nicely thanks to your guide!
Hello Sabastian... All credit to you.... A very good video.... you do explain things well in terms the average Joe with a bit of common sense could follow... and you do make the points about safety and not playing with the air/fuel mixture! All the Best.....Trevor
Cheers Sebastian! A new starter capacitor got my old Myson Velaire going again! It just has to hang in for a few more weeks before we get our new boiler.
Hi Been having trouble with my heatslave 26/32 Having watched your video I tried a few of your tips, and found the fan wasn't turning freely (by the way this was on a sterling 40 burner) so I disconnected the fuel pump from the fan and the fan was fine but the fuel pump was notchey so put some olive oil into the bearing side and Worked fine. So ordering a new fuel pump Original symptoms were when flat cold And everything reset it would heat up ok Then when you wanted more water i.e. Shower/bath /heating etc it would trip out Guessing the bearings in the pump when warm would be more tight Thanks for the great video although different pump the principles are the same 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
The drive pin for the gears in the pump can break causing no oil pressure. I get them pins made up so I can easily replace them. Or fit a new pump and recondition the old one and it can come in handy
This was very helpful, although I often wonder why they go to the bother of creating such sophisticated equipment to operate an electric chair, if a simple dig from a central heating boiler is all you need 🙂
Bloody excellent - I've got a Redfyre Oil Range Cooker - can I get someone to service it; more chance of finding Hen's teeth! Last engineer recommended I buy a new range cooker (£9k).
Ditto, my 20 year old Redfyre hasn't been serviced for a few years for that very reason. Local oil boiler service people seem to imply it is some kind of black magic.I think they just don't like having to work through the relatively restricted front panel of the cooker. Most common problems on mine have been solenoid, several times (Grundfoss solenoids seem very unreliable) and the motor capacitor changed a couple of times. This video has been an excellent explanation of what is going on.
Thanks for great video. My control box has not got any light on but the pump wouldn't switch to heat water or run central heating. Can I still press it to try reset it?
when I on my heating system the light of controller within second gets on then goes off then no light is there the orange light stays on when its working and flame is working properly but in this case, it is not igniting anymore, what do you think what it could be? Please reply because I am going to open it today the first time in my life, that would be very kind if you help us. thanks, yesterday I pushed the button and it went on but today goes off.
Very informative thank you. Could you also tell me after a an Electro Oil Sterling burner has been run out of fuel why the restart button refuses to iluminate, to allow a restart to activate please?
Brilliant video and extremely well explained! I watched it through a few times while waiting for a qualified engineer to come to fix my Rayburn 680k cd boiler as the cooking side kept locking out and eventually would not fire up I'm surprised how simple the workings are in oil fired burners and how easy they are to understand having watched this video It turned out that there were 2 problems which were preventing my burner to fire up First of all, the oil pump was jamming, not all the time, but intermittently. the oil pump and solenoid were replaced and the burner fired up However, after a short while it locked out again so the engineer came back to it The second time, he replaced the fan capacitor and that has sorted out the problem I will continue to get my Rayburn serviced annually by the same qualified engineer but I was just curious as to what the function of the fan capacitor is, which is the only thing that wasn't explained in any detail in this video Can anyone tell me please?
I have been servicing around 20 oil boilers a week and attending on average 5 breakdowns a week for the best part of a year. I personally don't find oil burners 'easy' at all!
Hi very interesting, but I'm still stuck where do I find the bleed nut on a ecoflam boiler. The boiler is very old but it was working fine until until a friend house sittin ran out of oil. It will strike up but won't stay on I think it could be air in the line. It's a ecloflam boiler with a flair motor. Any help would be much appreciated. Maria.
What do you think problem is when it does fire up then dies after 30 seconds roughly .i have to wait a minute till I hear a click from pump then I press button on pump it fires up then runs ok ,do you think it's air in line ? It doesent work from the control unit in the house ,I have to go out and start it from the unit outside .would appreciate your input .
Hi Sebastian, can I ask your advice please. I am working on a monoflame minor 1, it’s not even attempting to fire, fan/motor doesn’t come on, I have wired motor to mains and it works, when I power up burner it just sparks electrodes briefly but no motor running. I’m thinking it’s control box, any idea what might be wrong? Thanks, Brian
Great vid , helped diagnose the fault on my boiler , now up and running again . Thank you.
Your info on the solenoid was spot on. My oil burner was only burning for a few minutes and then turned off, replaced the solenoid and everything is working normal. Thank you a lot, your info helped me a lot, especially because it's -20C here right now 😅😅
The best video on TH-cam regarding explaining problems with burner .
Thanks for making it .

Excellent summary of burner operation and trouble-shooting. Thank you.
Well spoken, well presented, and very professional. If only there were more people like you!

Thanks for this video, helped me fault find my Stanley Super Star Aga
Really informative thanks.
Excellent video. Found my boiler stops because the coil goes open circuit when it gets hot. The resistance was within spec when it was cold!
Brilliant overview!
Thank you so much for this video !!!!
Fab bit of knowledge wish I had watched this would have saved me time

Hi Sebastian, Great video. My boiler seems to light but cut out when the air temperature drops. Any ideas?
so it is a good basic to troubleshooting and understand how it works
Brilliant

Very good instructional video. You mentioned a wet nozzle means " not atomising properly How do I remedy that problem? Is it an oil pressure issue?.
Very informative thank you. Could you also tell me after a an Electro Oil Sterling burner has been run out of fuel why the restart button refuses to iluminate, to allow a restart to activate please?
Hey still learning oil burners what’s the best way to know if water has gotten into the pump

I have a burner that fires up for a few hours then locks out. I have changed oil pump and solenoid. Do you think it could be control box
Magic eye👍
Thanks 👍😊
I have ecoflam minor 4.1 with nozzle 0.5. Any recommendation on what air flow setting?
High voltage, combustible gases and moving parts, that ticks all the right boxes!
this it burner brand?
