    Thanks for your review! I believe that the reason for the strange flight behavier of your quad in fast moves you mentioned is due to too soft mounted gyro and get irritated. I replaced the foam with thicker double-sided tape.

      Hi, this was the firmware I actually installed at the end of the video. It fixed the 120fps freeze and the OSD still displaying when you turn it off. So the fixes I'm interested in - if possible - are the clunky looking frame rate if you use PAL in your FPV feed (NTSC seems smoother) and can we clean the image up, lessen the noise in the live output ?

    I have had the little bell ticket for all notifications from your channel and a few others for literally a couple years now thanks

  • @xjet
    @xjet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As I mentioned in my review, I found the live video feed to be much smoother when using NTSC rather than PAL. I think the jerkiness is somewhat due to the frame-rate mismatch between PAL and NTSC. Because the camera actually does 30/60 and PAL is 25/50, using PAL for live video must drop frames and that produces a jerky output.

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’d kind of expect these 4K chip sets to be able to cope with the mix of the 60fps HD with 25/50fps SD. The manual did suggest PAL would give lower latency. Did you happen to test that one out?

    Great flying and review, Wayne! 😊
    The footage is beautiful! I really think that if FireFly makes a 2 lens camera based in this one... It would be a winner! 😃
    BTW, I have a Hawkeye FireFly here, I'm going to use to record my videos. It's a really great camera as well!

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. The recorded footage is nice but I can’t cope with that FPV feed for regular flying. A 2-lens system would work.

    Its your video card. a 6 year old computer cannot keep up with it. Had the exact same issue with my bosses DJI phantom at my work. None of the machines could render the video fast enough and he thought it was his camera. The HD footage from this is better than anything they've come up with in an enclosed camera. Awesome review as usual!! Sorry....I shouldn't say that's what it is in your case, but my experience was the low end video card being unable to render 4k that caused the jerkiness.

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's very curious the HD footage from this card.. .and bear in mine that I was only working in 1080p60. It's an old girl, my machine, but no issues with 4k from a DJI Mavir Air, or form the Tarsier... or anything except this video. My gut instinct is that there's something not quite right with the encoding that the codecs on Windows are just handling, while quicktime on my Mac is throwing a bit of a fit

    I mounted my Tarsier on my last 5" (going 3" or smaller from now on ). The FPV cam is great, almost at Ratel level, I'd say, and the 4K recording is great. The user experience setting up, etc.sucked big time. Almost none of the China based companies have a clue about little things like good manuals, good firmware, good quality control, etc. Caddx is no better, but the product is better quality than this. Thanks Wayne, you sure are covering good stuff lately.

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. The tarsier FPV camera was really good I thought. It’s a shame that getting the thing mounted in a 5” is such a pain. I would happily write some proper manuals for these guys but they don’t seem bothered. All about just rushing the next product out.

    May I point out that both the runcam split series and caddx turtles have much cleaner FPV feed when powered with 5 volts. I have tried 4-5 products of this category, and I can only suspect that a sub par buck converter is on the board generating rippled voltages to the NTSC/PAL analog components. If I power it with 5 volts, which was the standard digital/computer-logic chip voltage before Intel/AMD went on the rampage of converting chips to 3.3 volt, the built-in buck converter is muted, so the analog feed draws power from the good BEC, producing clean FPV feed. The HD recordings are oblivious of the ripple noises because the digital circuit is immune from analog noises. I have corroborated my findings with Albert Kim. The bottom line is that we are forced to use 5 volts with this series of products. And since the Hawkeye can't be powered by 5 volts, it is just that, helpless and hopeless. If you were trained in the 90s to be an electronic engineer, there was a saying in the schools that 5 volt means 1, and zero volt means zero. When in doubt, give it 5 volts.

      I've not tested the HDMI port at all. I presume HDMI would work when recording. For me, it would be more about the question of what sort of latency this would introduce. • @CurryKitten

That single FC/VTX will easily overheat and shutdown though unless you have some decent airflow going over it

    A brand noob here, I'm watching all these videos about FPV and such, thinking I want a quad someday soon. My burning question is what should I be expecting for image quality? Amazon, Banggood etc offer very cheap cameras, less than 20 bucks! Even fpv goggles are reasonably priced, but what will one get at these price points? Is it going to be a shaky blurry mess or will it be like watching a 3Dmovie at IMAX? The former I presume. Seriously, can someone speak English and give a noob a simple explanation as to what to hope for. Obviously the image quality must be reasonable or you wouldn't be flying yourselves. If your flying and you hit something can you tell if that object was a farm animal or the neighbours wife? Judging by many of the comments below your video Wayne, most viewers seem to be well versed in fpv "quading", some are offering their own opinions, some offer support with suggestions of what you could try to "fix" the camera in question and some seem to be judging you, even the haters speak their own language "bro". 2500 views, 137 likes, I wonder how many of those viewers are noobs like me and don't understand much of what you "pros" are saying and so don't bother hitting the like button. Bruce did some amazing videos explaining the basics of electricity and other relevant subjects, now I know what an ohm is. WEEEE! I will hit the like button, I do appreciate you guys encouraging the growth of the hobby and you do offer amazing content! Every evening I rush home from work to tune in. Thanks to all of you for all of your hard work. What the hell is a UFL? These acronyms need to go, PAL.

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kevin, thanks for you comment. You illustrate very neatly some of the difficulties involved in making videos about a subject that can be quite specialized: How can you balance content that targets an audience at both experienced guys and new pilots. Too technical and the noobs don't get it, and too basic and all the experienced guys turn off. I try and get the balance, but it's not always right. So you'll find me not explaining TLAS (Three-letter-acronyms (do you see what I did there)) for example - although most people learn them very quickly. But you do give me an idea that having a webpage or something with some sort of "FPV Glossary" might be an idea... watch this space.
      As to the quality of cameras, don't buy stuff that you can't at least see multiple reviews on where they use the camera in the way you want to use it. Cameras don't have to be expensive, but they certainly aren't all created equally. Best balance of cheap and good of things I've looked at recently is the Foxeer Arrow Mini (review is here th-cam.com/video/5p-sk1x5PNY/w-d-xo.html) the image you can see in that video is what you are getting via your goggles.... of course, goggles aren't all created equally either. Cheap googles, if box goggles and with a resolution of at least 640x480 can actually look pretty good - but cheap goggles with a lower resolution should be avoided.

      @@CurryKitten 4K has no higher bit rate and not more details than 2K7. I didn't check the photo function, but the video read out is not 4K, it's just blown up. you find that often. The manufacturer needs the trigger word 4K for marketing. The chip set of cheapos is not capable of the 4K bit rate. Either they compress the material to death with blotches, or they read out a smaller format/use a smaller sensor. Anyway not bad for the price. Tho the focus and parallax of this thing is very sensitive. I printed a rubber-mat between main board and case in order to adjust and get it sharp over the whole image.

    Looks like garbage. After Xjet’s review I decided then, but yours puts a nail in the coffin.

    Could not live with that fpv image myself.
    Awful imho.
    Glad I watched this so I know to NOT get this camera.
    Tarsier looks better ....
    I have just flown the larva X and that is how I want all my fpv feeds to look now with the runcam nano 2, DVR was ok too but not hd ...

      Not good enough is it. I've just got the Lava-X in, looking forward to testing it !
