Good tutorial. The only problem I have is that I don't know EXACTLY where to jump after getting past the torch. My jumps are just like your jump at 5:00. Even though I always stand right in front of the pixel, most of the time I get unlucky and least of the time I do it. And, you're right. Most of the time when I try to perform this jump I feel like a doofus and always slap myself. I managed to record myself successfully jumping past the guard and I can upload it. Actually, for me, it's harder to jump past other guards successfully.

On reflection, I don't know how much time that actually saves. But still, I always went for the sword, because I wanted that continuity to the second level. Didn't like getting it for "free" by these exploits. But I admired the skills of those who could do this consistently.
Yeah luring the guard to the left definitely saves time over getting the sword! I used to do that strat too before learning this jump skip. Both work great for speedruns, but I get what you mean about wanting to get the sword - it feels more like how Jordan Mechner meant the game to be played. Pretty cool hearing about different ways people played it back in the day!
I was never able to do this if I jumped into the guard's room. But, I can do it reliably by just running into the room. Note that "jump just after the torch" means to press jump between the torches so the kid actually jumps just after the torch. (Dosbox 0.74-3 with PoP 1.0 from myabandonware in case it matters).
I believe it works on all version of the game. So the big difference with the guards from 1.0 and 1.4 is that the guards in 1.0 are actually a slight bit easyer. If you are playing on DOSbox one of the problems could be that your cycles are low.... it is technicly still possible but it does make it harder. I toggle off sound because of the songs the songs that plays when you enter takes off time. Some runners start their runs off without the sound on. When restarting a run I always restart the entire game. I have always felt that I got better RNG if I restarted the entire game... according the those who have looked at the actual code for the game this isn't true. I suppose it's just my own superstition. :P
Tried 50 times, get killed every time. Don't know how to pull it of. I jumpt straight into the sword everytime, no matter how early or late i try to jump
Just tried this out at least 8 times in a row and skipping the guard doesn't work. I get killed every time. Is this a modified version? I'm using the PC version in DosBOX.
It also helps to have more cycles in dosbox and a good keyboard. If you set cycles high and you get a sound error you just need to go into setup manually set all the sound settings so there isn't any auto detect.
This version is 1.4. I don't remember where I downloaded it, but I do know that there are many sites that hose the game. I also have the CD version of the game that comes with POP2 as well.
I wonder if it works for Sega Mega Drive/ Sega Genesis, it's one of the latest versions. As for the SNES version, I think it's too different for this trick
And I thought I was fancy doing it so he chases you then you go up and back to the original room and run behind him and dash to the right skipping the trip to the sword and return leg/fight. 😆
@@Lilducktator Yes, the one you said. It was really rewarding pulling it off. The only thing (ever so) slightly challenging was pulling upwards at the left edge of the screen shortly before the guard swings at you (at least I let the guard come all the way to the left to have some maneuverig-space after the prince falling down and landing to the right of the guard). Edit: Imagine you not having the sword at Level 2 after pulling this trick off! XD

It's actually ok to let yourself down, it's only the place where the jumps are performed exactly that matter.
I don't think I can give you specific advice on that you just need to pratice a lot.

All speedruns are done with pop 1.4. Pop 1.0 actually has easyer guards.

Are you playing on DosBox? If so make sure that your cycles are set to over 10000.

That is actually the way to do it in the No Major Glitches NMG run.
