  • Navi Radjou has spent years studying "jugaad," also known as frugal innovation. Pioneered by entrepreneurs in emerging markets who figured out how to get spectacular value from limited resources, the practice has now caught on globally. Peppering his talk with a wealth of examples of human ingenuity at work, Radjou also shares three principles for how we can all do more with less.

this guy made me proud for not having everything. limited resources? is equal to jugad and growing as much as you can in that limit. and you can grow soo much. if you had everything you might have ignored those small growths that lead up to bigger ones.
i am happy...and proud and ready to grow

*Ephemeralization:* A term coined by R. Buckminster Fuller in 1938, is the ability of technological advancement to do "more and more with less and less until eventually you can do everything with nothing".

This video can be summarized with the quote, "The more you know, the less you need." I agree with all he said though.

Just to clarify, it's not that SMS works without an internet connection. This is a commonly used software messaging pattern called "store and forward". In cases where communication isn't urgent and connectivity is either poor or traffic is heavy, messages can be stored and forwarded when connectivity returns. That works for occasional messages with small payloads. For example, SMS or pre-scheduled bank transactions (e.g. deposit my daily payment of $1 whenever ever you can, as long as it is some time today).

Money (but not the interest) is borrowed into existence, so western countries are tied to an economic model which relies on built in obsolescence, waste, fashion and constant growth to keep making enough to pay the interest. The strategy in developing countries seems to be contraction - doing increasingly more with increasingly less.

Pleasant guy. To produce using less resources is one thing to focus on. The make do solutions however useful will not create a viable economy. It will keep people on a to low level of innovation. But cheap innovations that requires a limited capital is doable and even private persons can supply low level capital.

North vs South, West vs ?. I have a distaste for the frame of reference for the topics presented in this talk. ( I do like the show cased products ) The over ridding truth is that business and open markets are spectacularly spectacular in the benefits they bring to people. This is universal across geographies. One of the hall marks of capitalism is illustrated particularly well in this talk. Specifically that is, the application of innovation to deliver value in the face of scare resources.
The speaker is rightly proud of the accomplishments of his geographic stomping grounds. But he creates a false and distracting juxtaposition to frame these accomplishments as a unique model. He has confused unique products suited to their niche with unique business models. There is only one known effective business model and that is free markets. We would benefit from recognizing the spectacularly spectacular benefits of free markets to deliver the products and services needed by all peoples of the world within whatever challenging environment they may exist.

this guys doesn't tell a coherent story. he complains about the more for more system, but then praises the siemens scanner which does more, but has cost more effort to design.
the idea he is promoting already happens all over the world, it's not a new trend or something, its a natural reflex for anyone a budget (±everyone) to do more with less.

This has some real interesting information but Mr. Radjou is a terrible speaker. Also, the three "best innovations" he talked about all come from (already) developed countries, and none of them is free.
