IMHO this is one of the best videos you've done so far, and you have a lot of great content. It is good to see so many different applications of your concepts. Any time you can add a few nuggets of info for those of us in the southeast or more southern locations the better, thanks again.
I agree, Jeff I always wonder what your plots end up looking like come fall. Appreciate update vids especially with the new plot start. Plot on. -UP of MI
I agree with the southeast tips. When should we plant the buckwheat? I want to adopt this system. Right now we just let the weeds take over and till because we thought that was our only real option without a drill. Soybeans can't keep up with the browse so I want to try buckwheat for summer cover crop. Do the deer ever eat the buckwheat?
@@brianboyett6250 I was surprised to see that they do in my area, but there isn't much native browse either. They do prefer other things like cow peas, radish, and cereal grains more...oh yeah, sunflowers are their favorite.
Thank you Jeff!! This if by far the best video, I truly appreciate it! This style of video is what I have been hoping for! I shot I nice buck because of you and your videos (and because the Lord blessed me with him). Thank you again so much for what your doing I have only 15 acres but because of your teaching I've been able to map the property and last year shot a beautiful buck. So thank you! God bless!

These videos are outstanding. Purchased 50ac last year and on 2nd year following the food plot videos. Prevented me from getting sucked into to gimmick stuff on the market
Ive been planting soybeans on top of the ground for years and have always had great success! They last all the way until February with heavy deer browse. You know that from my EZ plots. Happy to help Jeff, good luck this year!
Absolutely the best whitetail content available! Average joe can take this info and produce quality habitat. Jeff is the reason I started food plots. No need for bells and whistles. The experience and science behind this video is priceless. Watch this video multiple times and you will be on your way also. Congrats on 100k and thanks for all the great content!
Put up one of your mock scrapes 2 weeks ago. Tons of activity as early as the evening I put it up! Planting my food plot this weekend using your system! Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
I spent 2 years part- time while in college testing and developing test methods for many herbicides. I love Jeff's videos and he has taught me much. When it comes to herbicides he is right 90% plus. The type of water used does make a minor difference but usually is not a game stopper. I personally like to use soft water with a surfactant. But if soft water was not easy for me to get I would use hard water, rain water, pond/stream water provided I could do so with out plugging up my sprayer. Most important when using any herbicide is to use the PPE. I personally like to wear my respirator (not just a dust mask), rubber gloves, and goggles.
One of your best videos yet, this video gives the everyday hunter everyday solutions! And Kudos to Diane working her tail off, hope she gets the buck she's after, she deserves it!!
Jeff this is the best video you have ever uploaded. Please take some footage of planting your WI plots. I know it’s pretty much the same process but please do it anyway. Us viewers love the on ground physically moving videos like this. It make us feel like we are there part of the action. Please also upload updates when things start growing and when you seed the winter rye in early September.
I sprayed a field, tilled it, then broadcast milo. I came back the next day with the sprayer and cultipacker and did both at the same time. Got a good weed free food plot now. I'm trying sorghum over corn due to the fact there's nothing for them to eat until October or later and it won't get destroyed early like corn. Spraying gly as you plant is a great method.
Yes that plot start is amazing. I just used a jug on my soybean field and they turned out amazing, I also got plot boost I'm going to wait to use that with my other jug of plot start. Thanks for explaining out the spreading of the different seeds.
I agree with Paul, this is your best video yet! You’ve said in the past that when using buckwheat you like it in the 6-8 week growth range for this method of planting. What do you do before that early June time frame with your soil? Have you double planted buckwheat to maintain the weed control so you don’t ever have to work the soil?
Hey Jeff I put up my first ever grapevine licking branch in early July and the big bucks have been hitting it regularly ever since. So much fun to see!
Okay Jeff. I have two of your books and numerous TH-cam videos under my belt. Going to use your no-till method. Herbicide is down. Will plant in three weeks. Excited to see what it does. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
You can use as a pre emergent , prodiamine , and diothiopyr as a post emergent for weed control. This is used on many residential areas. Prodiamine is layed when soil temps are at 55 degrees for the first app and at 65-70 degrees for your 2nd app. We then spray bio stimulants like rgs ,air 8, humic n microgreene for root growth n color.
Nice job with this one, Jeff. Got my brassica & oats in last weekend. Used the packermaxx over it and sprayed. Been using the plot start for two years along with the plot boost. It does work and minimizes the time & effort when the plots are on the other side of a swamp.
Got my food plots planted last weekend in mid Michigan 1 day before the rain. Maybe a few weeks early but I couldn’t pass up the rain after this summer drought. My spring plots all burned up. So sprayed them all and now have fresh seed down for ladino clover, alfalfa plots. Also new brassica plots including rape, turnips, radish. Planted some oats and rye and will follow up with more oats, rye first of Sept. Have also sprayed for spring switch grass plots prep. Sadly I drove over my Earthway with the tractor but after I was finished. 😂😩
not having a packermax, I used my back blade on my tractor, to knock down the buckwheat, spin it around, and drag it around the plot--- worked great ! Better than the luck you had getting her out of the air conditioning on to the sprayer job in the hot sun Lol
Jeff been following your lead on my 20 this year. Finally seeing nice bucks living on my land. Thanks for all the great info! Two target bucks, so far.
Love how you showed footage “in action” and your explanations of why you are planting the different varieties. Would love to see similar approach when you make your timber bedding areas.

My buckwheat got completely droughted out on my first ever plots this year :( Hoping my Northwoods brassicas, clover, and rye will take! I've been able to manage the weeds really well. Got my lime down 2 weeks ago. Are you using any fertilizer in your new plots or are you just using the DeerGro plot start?
Thanks a lot David, I really hope it all helps but that stinks about your buckwheat! With great weed control you sure have a great chance...those seeds should all take very well 👍 I am using the Plot Start in place of lime...can't wait to see how it works. I will use Plot Boost too when the plants are growing...but not as a substitute to fertilizer...just helps the plants to use the fertilizer more efficiently. Hope that makes sense!

I was in Boone National in KY last wknd. Got 5 inches in 2 hours. Rain like I'd never seen before. Naturally, we were a mile deep on the trail when it hit. Lol. I'm planting in my buckwheat today here in IN. Buckwheat has a few weeds in it but for most part looks good. Got Egyptian wheat all the way around it .
My Whitetail Forage Radish from Northwoods Whitetail says to plant 8 lbs per acre if planted alone or 4 to 5 lbs if mixed. You said in the video to plant 8 lbs per acre with 2-3 lbs of brassica. Later in the video you said to cut in half both seeding rates. Should the radish be planted at 4 to 5 lbs per acre or 8 lbs per acre? I appreciate the videos Jeff. I'm learning a lot!
Awesome video Jeff! Best one yet IMO. the walk through each plot and discussion was awesome, especially seed rates that sound like rain. Really learned something there! Keep up the great work and good luck this fall.
This year we worked up a couple fields for food plots with a rototiller. My question is how deep should you till the land? I have looked with no answers. Thanks in advance.
Awesome stuff per usual. Just planted the WHS blend into my standing buckwheat yesterday and rolled down. Am I going to have issues with the buckwheat as it actually seeded out? Inside the hauls was a cotton like core, I don’t think the seeds actually formed. Thoughts? Thanks for your time.
I have watched a lot of your videos Jeff, they're all awesome! I noticed in other videos you say not to plant rye with brassicas but in this video you plant rye around labor day on top of the tilled radish. Will this stunt the growth of the tilled radish? I am starting my food plots for the first time this year so i am using this method and going to start the buckwheat no-till method next year.
Jeff I planted buckwheat first week of June upstate ny. I'm using your no till system. Its been awesome so far and I planted my fall crops August first and smashed the buckwheat on the seeds after! I will be making a video step by step and all credit goes to you for your no till system. Once the video is posted ill let you know. Have you tried winfred brassica? I have then planted in my brassica mix plot thanks again! -Tino
Jeff like your videos great knowledge! I'm in Southern Alabama and looking to try something different for food plots. We usually use rye, wheat, clover. What would you suggest? Thanks for your help.
Got my plots in today, ahead of a southern MN rain. 40 lbs winter wheat and 20 pounds clover per acre. Based off of a qdma recommendation. Definitely gonna try buckwheat next spring. Did i read right, your not a fan of clover in the north? If so, why? If not, my mistake
Jeff I could have a problem with my buckwheat patch. Mine is going to seed right now and I’m not looking to plant and crush for a couple of weeks yet. Will I have an issue with the buckwheat reseeding and shading out my fall plot?
I'm very interested in this technique just spreading the seeds by hand but I think it would be better to add water before and after spreading seeds directly
Jeff, I am a wildlife management student. I have 8 classes left and I'm looking to forge out my niche beyond graduation. I started watching your videos and commenting before I watched 'How to be a consultant.' I'm a Marine Veteran and I'd love to volunteer some time and maybe make a seminar or two of yours. I've hunted since I've been 10, conducted population studies and worked for some QDMAs at local military bases here in Kentucky. If you have clients here I'd love to be a fly on the wall or a grasshopper on a blade, but I can carve out time next summer, completely on a volunteer bases. I have a goal of becoming a private lands biologist for my home state or a consultant for one of our local outfitters like Whitetail Heaven. I don't know if this is possible but I thought I'd continue commenting since I know you're dedicated answering comments. I wouldn't mind working with Brandon either. I just need that field experience to add to my education. That experience would be more valuable then any salary I could get straight out of school. Thanks Charles
I have a clover plot I kind of use like your buckwheat except I'm 5 years in and have not had to replant I mow it twice a year last time August 1st with a flail mower spread my turnips radish and beet blend and my clover is thick enough it holds a large amount of moisture and it seems to stunt the clovers growth just enough to let my seed blend take off. It also seems to block out other weeds
Love these videos..first time food ploter so this really does help me, my one question is can you throw lime down before you spray for weeds?..say like when the weeds are still in dormancy in march?
Thank you very much! That's great with your peas ☺️ You have to be very careful with peas tho...they need a LOT of water to get germinate and grow without being covered by soil. May work ever 2-3 years but not every year...
Whitetail Habitat Solutions thanks for the information. I plan have equipment next season . Just moved to new house and property hopefully it works out .. Still plaint cereal grain and gonna follow all ur steps for Germination would love see shirts and hats and beanies of ur company love support you great work!
Just wondering if a shelf could be added above the Packer Max wheel to hold a sprayer that way you can pack and spray at the same time....Cutting time for planting large plots. And added weight would also help pack
So I have a question if you or anyone could answer this for me. I have a bunch bermuda grass that gross on my property in some spots I'd like to plan. Could I bushhog it down and use it as a cover crop for the seeds, and do I need to spray glyphosate first and maybe lightly disc it? Thanks for the awesome video!
Busy year Jeff,100k subscribers, new property+ client visits you could wish days were 48 hrs long not 24,how do you find the time to do so much in 1 day?I know all your hard work will pay off in great hunts in 2020 for you and tour family!
Thanks Tex I need those 48 hours ☺️ it really helps living on the land now...always something to do! Should be a very rewarding year ☺️ Hope yours is too!
Real curious about the plot start. I’ve tried it before but never really saw a benefit. But this was early on in my food plotting. Think I’ll try it again.
Awesome video. I would love to convert to no till plots and I am considering trying buckwheat on my plots here in Central TX next spring. However, I expect the buckwheat to be dead from heat and drought by early July. Should I just let it sit until mid September before crushing it and planting my fall seeds? Thanks!
Jeff, if you have 9 acres of plot go and talk to the local farmers coop and have them spread the lime for you. I cant imagine it would cost more than $400-500 dollars for them to do all the work and spread all the lime you need in bulk. You would be set for years instead of spraying foo foo juice every year and not fixing the problem.
Jeff - Were all your seeds you spun out round up ready? I'm asking because you sprayed glyphosate after you spun seeds out and crushed the buckwheat. OR does the buckwheat protect your seeds from the glyphosate? Thanks. I agree with the other comments...this is a great video.
I live in the southeast and we have a lot of that highway grass. Could you not broadcast your seed then cut the highway grass and spray? Kinda like you did with the buckwheat, I know you didn't cut the buckwheat you just knocked it down but this highway grass is terrible. Also what seeds would you recommend here in the southeast for a fall food plot? Thanks. Enjoyed the video
Hey Jeff i will be planting your WHS mix this weekend. I wasn't able to do the buckwheat and have bare soil. I was wondering if you could steer me in the right direction to get it planted on bare soil. I have the soil tilled, was thinking it I was to seed, then drag, then cultipack over it that might put the seeds at a good depth? Let me know what ya think. Thanks for all the great content. Keep it up.
If I’m just doing rye on half my plot in sept should I do my 3rd spraying now or wait until sept right before I plant rye or both which would make 4 on that half
Great system using it this year so tell us how you start next year with the plots after all that buck wheat is on the ground and dead along with all the dead food plot debris thanks
I live here in Maine. What would be my time schedule for brassica, clover and then winter rye? I assume I should be getting the first two into the ground right now. Great video. Thanks for any and all your help>
Hi Jeff, I planted winter wheat and I would like to kill it off later this summer and plant a Brassica, so I can use this same method smashing it down and spraying with glysophate after seeding my Brassica right?
Great tips Jeff. We are trying the no til this year with some oats and clover. We want to try rye in a new plot we've been prepping. Do you have a particular brand or rye brands that you've had the most success with? I'm finding some bad mixes with rye grass fillers and obviously want to avoid them. Keep up the great content and thanks for your dedication, sharing your knowledge.
Jeff, thanks for what you do! Question...can you put the winter clover down and then run over the buckwheat with a brush hog set high...? Thinking ahead for labor day weekend...and utilizing the buckwheat to retain moisture is a good plan. let me know. Thanks!! Property is located in Northern eastern lower Michigan...Alpena area
Hi Jeff great video with a ton of information. I have two questions I am hoping I can answer for me. For the plot start are u adding that to it glyphosate in the same sprayer at the same time and spraying or are u spraying one then cleaning the sprayer and spraying the next? Second what is the typical seeding rate for brassicas 3lbs per acre, 6lbs per acre? Thanks Eric
Great Video. Thank you for you’re willingness to teach. I’ve got half of my plots in and the rest will go in before the next rain. Would you plant switchgrass anytime soon or wait to frost seed it???
Great video! How much would one expect to spend on an acre or so food plot? Also thank you for all of your tips and advice I use them as much as possible.
Thanks for the video Jeff. I ran into a problem last year with spreading those small brassica seeds .... seemed not enough and then I’d open it up a little and it was too much dispersed. This year the sweet feast suggested using 6-24-24 fertilizer so I saved some of the fertilizer and filled the spreader with it and then added the bag of the brassica blend and mixed it up thoughly into the bag. This enabled me to open the spreader to the 3 setting and I’m hoping it evenly spread the small brassica seeds. I have no results yet on how it worked but what do you think of this practice?
Ok so this is for fall hunting plot prep, my question is what about buckwheat prep, spray glso first or till first? When to plant northwest Illinois (buckwheat)
Jeff, I just started planting a food plot this year because of your videos! Thanks for the videos. I threw down some seed two weeks ago, a little early for southwest Ohio/ southeast Indiana. Later in the video you said to cut in half both seeding rates. Should the radish be planted at 4 to 5 lbs per acre or 8 lbs per acre? I appreciate the videos Jeff. I'm learning a lot!
Best video yet.... perfectly timed for this weekend. I will see tomorrow if I can actually do as instructed....Thanks again for your videos.
Jeff, HUGE CONGRATS on the 100k. You are awesome and such an amazing influence to so many people out there. Keep up the great work.
Jeff, great video. I truly appreciate all you do to share your experience! God bless you and your family.
This is probably your best video so yet. But I said that about the last one I watched too😁
I have watched a lot of your videos Jeff, they're all awesome!
-Tino
This is an awesome, in depth video on how to food plot! Thank You Jeff for an excellent video!
Thanks a lot WC!! I really hope it helps a lot of folks
Jeff like your videos great knowledge! I'm in Southern Alabama and looking to try something different for food plots. We usually use rye, wheat, clover. What would you suggest? Thanks for your help.
Like to use a little handheld spreader to do brassicas. Put half in and try to cover whole plot and do other half going crossways.
Thank you for saying something about Arkansas because I was wondering the difference between up north to being down south like I am in Arkansas
Good info Jeff. I'm jealous of that buckwheat stand. It's like Arizona here in central PA. Nothing grew
Dang Stephen...crazy the lack of growth that you had! Buckwheat is very hardy...needs timely rains tho.
Beautiful .. all about timing , and having the time. Love buckwheat for summer
Amen Eric!
That’s right
Diane wants first crack at the droptines, so she’s putting the labor in! Good to have a helper for sure!
Jeff I could have a problem with my buckwheat patch. Mine is going to seed right now and I’m not looking to plant and crush for a couple of weeks yet. Will I have an issue with the buckwheat reseeding and shading out my fall plot?
Hey Jeff, great video as always. Can the Plot start be added to sprayer tank when applying glyphosate as well? You know, 2 steps at one time??
Thank you! Unfortunately it can not...the Plot Boost to add later can, but Plot Start can not.
I'm very interested in this technique just spreading the seeds by hand but I think it would be better to add water before and after spreading seeds directly
God adds water...
This is best info I have gotten in awhile. Great Job 👍
Thank you very much Travis ...really appreciate it. Hope it all helps 👍
Agreed with others, one of your best videos yet and you sure do have a lot of great ones already, I’ve learned a ton
Excited to see these plots come together. A lot of information on this video.
Hands down your best food plot video
I love ur videos and all ur information you give out to public ! But I’m having great growth with my peas from just on top soil no cultipacker
This was a very explanatory video, really got into the detail needed. As always thanks Jeff for all the info.
Thanks!
Great information! If the ground is hard should I wait for rain to plant then cultipacker the seed to have better seed contact?
Jeff, if you have 9 acres of plot go and talk to the local farmers coop and have them spread the lime for you. I cant imagine it would cost more than $400-500 dollars for them to do all the work and spread all the lime you need in bulk. You would be set for years instead of spraying foo foo juice every year and not fixing the problem.
Do you recommend driving over brassica with atv tires to push in the soil? or not needed?
Jeff - Were all your seeds you spun out round up ready? I'm asking because you sprayed glyphosate after you spun seeds out and crushed the buckwheat. OR does the buckwheat protect your seeds from the glyphosate? Thanks. I agree with the other comments...this is a great video.
LOL...guess I needed to just keep watching! You answered my question...thank you, sir
Ha, you are welcome Ryan...and for anyone else - Glyphosate does not kill seeds, only plants that are growing, as a post emergent.
Thanks for the plot info i really enjoy how you explain every step on all your videos thanks a bunch 👍
Have you thought about doing a time lapse some time? I’d find that super interesting
Doing that tomorrow 😁
Whitetail Habitat Solutions I know you have that drone! 👌🏻😉
Thanks
Eric
I know this is a shot in the dark but what was all the seeds used here in this field or what pack of seeds? Ill watch again and try to catch'em.
Top notch information. Thank you sir for all you the information you provide As always keep putting it out and I will keep soaking it up.
Facts here. Pay attention and follow directions.
Great video Jeff. Very helpful
Awesome Robert...thank you!
Does the Glyphosate or 24d hurt the switchgrass or buckwheat seed? Looking forward to implementing ultimate no till in 2021! Thanks Jeff
Jeff, I just started planting a food plot this year because of your videos! Thanks for the videos. I threw down some seed two weeks ago, a little early for southwest Ohio/ southeast Indiana. I put basic greens for now since we have some soy bean and corn fields. How would you go about planting a plot in a wide valley in between crop fields?
