- Learn Initials part 1: b, p, m, f in Ten Minutes | Chinese Pinyin Lesson 6
Initials are called "声母" in simplified Chinese (pinyin: shēngmǔ). There are 21 initials excluding y and w. The conventional order is:
b, p, m, f; d, t, ,n, l; g, k, h; j, q, x; zh, ch, sh, r; z, c, s
In this Pinyin Lesson, we learn the first 4 initials, "b", "p", "m" and "f".

佛 sounds like “fwo” instead of “fo”, with a short single vowel “o”. I hear 佛 as f + wo(窝). Is the phonetic transcription of “bo”, “po”, “mo”, “fo” inaccurate such that some websites and teachers pronounce them literally as a consonant + a short vowel instead of “bwo”,”pwo”, “mwo”, “fwo”? I am confused.
Because 'o' pinyin sounds like somewhat like that
b should not be pronounced like “bo”. b should be pronounced very light. And when pronounce p, the air should come out of your mouth which b shouldn’t.
@Guan Meng It appears just from listening here that this "wo" occurs when there is a consonant which uses the lips (b, p, m, f) + an "o" vowel.
I could be wrong.
Anyway, there are different transcription systems. Don't be confused and believe your ears.
There is only so much information a given transcription system can show. We could get really complicated but that would be defeating the purpose.
Y is the O pronunciation wrong ????????????
can you elaborate on this because i think its quite alright?
The o pronunciation is wrong again 😂😂😂
