As soon as I saw Family Dog, I thought he looked just like Sparky from Frankenweenie. Then when you mentioned Tim Burton worked on the show, it all made sense.
@@CarysCreatesThings Family Dog is a cartoon I only know of because it received at least one video game tie in, as is also the case with Maya The Bee, Benjamin The Elephant and Initial D!
I miss swat cats. Used to watch that in 93. I remember also watching stunt dawgs as well. 93 was an awesome year. Playing Mario paint and what not. Much simpler times.
Apparently the show had too many production issues because the Miranda episodes were supposed to air first but had to be redone, later Bonkers is transferred to work with Lucky who moves away after getting hired by the FBI.
Bonkers did have 65 episodes in four groups so it's a bit misleading to call it a single season. Other shows would only get 13 episodes a season. It is on Disney+ but up until that time it was unavailable. I don't believe it's ever been released on DVD.
From my understanding, it had production issues where the Miranda Wright episodes were the original premises of the slated 65 episode series. However, Disney deemed the animation quality from overseas less than stellar, where they retooled the series with a team of writers. The new Wright then retooled the series where they replaced Miranda Wright with Lucky Piquel, but made the Piquel episodes taking place before Miranda's - Lucky Piquel's surname is probaby a "play-on-words" that his episodes are prequel episodes.19 of the Wright episodes were aired after the 42 Piquel episodes. I digress. No offense to the video, but it is a misleading as some of these cartoons such as Bobkers and Double Dragon intended to be 1 season because it was the fashion at the time to make enough episodes for syndication. If you think about it, a lot of the Disney Afternoon cartoons like the Rescue Rangers and Tailspin didn't have additional episodes made for Saturday mornings. From my recollection, a few did such as Aladdin and Darkwing Duck.
YOU HAVE CROOOOO OMG I'm so happy!!! I caught reruns of this in the early 2000s on Nickelodeon and I loved it so much. Only ever saw like three episodes, but it stuck in my brain so hard.
This is the first mention of Cro I've seen in comments, This is a show I forgot I missed. Hit the nostalgia Hard. When remembering old cartoons at work, I hit Swat Kats, Tailspin by song alone, etc. But, I completely forgot this show existed.
I miss being a kid in the 90s. It was definitely a golden decade. I remember bonkers n both sonic cartoons from back then. Saturday morning toons w cereal were all i needed to be happy
The 'Cro' theme song goes hard, man. Me and my best friend in middle school would always spontaneously sing it out loud (same with the Captain Planet ending theme) because it always got stuck in our heads, and I still remember it to this day.
As a pre-teen, I watched Sonic, Dennis, Double Dragon, Droopy, and Bonkers. The latter were undoubtedly the best, and I still remember the theme-tune for Bonkers very fondly.
Sonic and Double Dragon were the best of this list because these are most of what I remember. There is one missing which is Speed Racer. Some of the best cartoons were from the 90s IMO!
Things tend to last longer when you’re a kid. I must’ve watched the entire series of bonkers because I thought that show was on for five years. There were so many episodes I had no idea it was only one season. same with Tail Spin.
Oddly, I remember The Family Dog appearing as part of some kind of special presentation. I only ever saw one episode but I liked it enough that I clicked on this video when I saw the dog in the header image.
I was a huge fan of anything and everything Sonic the Hedgehog while growing up in the 90s. I fondly remember watching both animated series and playing with a little sonic toy I got from McDonalds constantly

In 93 I was 13. I remember almost everyone of these shows except for Cro and Stone Protectors. Only reason I watched Cadillacs and Dinosaurs was cause of the comic. Some of these I had forgotten about because I didnt watch them. But I remember seeing the commercials and I remember turning on The all-new Dennis the Menace show one morning and did not like it. I had always loved the old Dennis I grew up on that version and something just seemed off with the new one. Also, the part with the mean brother yelling "mad dog mad dog" I instantly had a rush of memories. Wow, such great shows.....sometimes but thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Ive seen all of these since I had absentee parents, and watched way too much TV as a kid. Cro and Bonkers were my favorites. Bonkers deserves a comeback ✊
One of the few good things about the Speed Racer cartoon is that it helped generate interest in the classic version. MTV ended up licensing the series and airing it at 1am on Friday night IIRC.
I loved Bonkers! The lucky pickle joke still makes me laugh all these years later! Also, the "after these messages, we'll be riiiiiight back!" short is a punch right in the nostalgia gut. Memories from a better time.....

Technically it did have 2 seasons as the miranda episodes were actually produced first but after those few episodes failed in test markets they made the much better received lucky episodes but come time to air the show proper they just aired the lucky episodes first and used the miranda episodes as filler to reach the 65 episode threshold since the show wasn't popular enough to warrant producing more episodes. So basically the show is like those scooby doo syndication series that package multiple series together as the lucky and miranda episodes are technically two different runs and would certainly qualify as multiple seasons if it wasn't a made for syndication deal.
Thank you for explaining what "1 season" means. I was always shocked to hear some shows that had like several dozen episodes only lasted one season, never made sense to me.
Thabks for the nostalgia. Back in the late 80s and early 90s, shows were created strictly to release toys and IP related merch. I remember so many 90s shows doing this. Not just stone protectors. COPS, Centurions, Thunder Cats, Street Sharks. So many of these cartoons were 1 or 2 season things, but the moment they were released, they already had an entire toy line. Growing up in that time was so much fun. But LJN had their hand in all of this. Flooding the market with random garbage IP and mediocre video games as well.
A couple of notes on Family Dog. First, Amazing Stories was an anthology series, similar to the Twilight Zone, and Family Dog was the only episode that was animated. Second, it was created by Brad Bird, who would go on to do The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille. An underrated clasic.
I remember watching it back in the day. I probably didn't fully understand it then, but now that I look back on it I feel sorry for the dog because his human family are too wrapped up in themselves to pay attention to him!
And I don't think any of the people that worked on the Amazing Stories Family Dog were involved with the TV series, which was rushed into production after The Simpsons became popular and all the other networks wanted prime time cartoons of their own. The titles of all these cartoons are listed on tombstones in one of The Simpsons Halloween Specials, after these shows all flopped and were cancelled: Family Dog, Capitol Critters, and Fish Police.
As soon as I saw Family Dog, I thought he looked just like Sparky from Frankenweenie. Then when you mentioned Tim Burton worked on the show, it all made sense.

Bonkers was a terrific cartoon!
I loved that Family Dog short! "Sniveling, snarling, white hot ball of canine terror!"
Let's not forget Edna Mode's distant precursor Gerta LeStrange :)
You have to hand it to CBS for turning an obscure comic like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs into a show. Usually, it was Fox who did that.
It was a cool show. I'm watching season one on Tubi.
I don't believe I saw it on CBS, but Teletoon (Canada, now called Cartoon Network) had it for a while in the early 2000s.
I never saw it but it actually looks kind of awesome 😂
I knew it as a Arcade game 1st. And it's still a pretty good game to replay.
They aired TMNT which started as an obscure indie comic so maybe they were hoping lighting would strike twice!
Bonkers was so good it's lived on in my memories for decades now. They failed for cancelling it.
