I listen to a lot of Japanese Rock, Metal and even some Pop.
Of all the groups out there, BABYMETAL is one that really can't be classified based on one song.
They're one of the most diverse ever.
It sounds like by "cookie cutter" you're talking about this song using a well known intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus and bridge structure.
    Fair enough.
Unfortunately that expression is generally used as a pejorative, denoting something mass-produced or lacking any distinguishing characteristics.
I don't think that's what you meant, but that is the literal definition.
At any rate, hope you continue. There's a lot of great stuff still to discover.

    • @JON.HOUSE24
      @JON.HOUSE24  ปีที่แล้ว +14

Yeah, you're exactly right. "cookie cutter" wasn't exactly the right way to phrase it. "Predictable" was worse, and "following a traditional structure" was closer but too wordy. After thinking about it "right down the middle" and "seamless" is how I'd describe it.
I meant nothing pejorative. The song is groovy and has been looping in my head for the last 8 hours lol

@@JON.HOUSE24 This is probably the closest Babymetal has to what we used to call "radio friendly", so you were kind of there. Most are a little more "out there" as it were. And a couple of the proggiest songs I've ever heard, as I'm sure dozens will recommend, since you mentioned it in the vid. :)

I am a 60 yo american and I love every aspect of this bands music . To create a whole new genre out of (J-pop and Metal) two things that would not seem to fit together is like musical alchemy. It's like Disney meets Metallica. Genius.

62 year old from UK right here. Japan is giving us some great music and BABYMETAL is amongst the very best and most interesting of it.
For some reason, BABYMETAL (and, to a lesser extent, Nemophila) have the power to move me to inexplicable tears even though I know only a few words of Japanese. Amazing.

I'm a 75 yr old American who has fallen in love with Japanese music. I got started actually, quite a few years ago with The 5,6,7,8's after i saw them in Kill Bill. But one night someone posted the Wagakki Band video Kishikaisei and I was hooked. From Wagakki Band to BabyMetal to Band-Maid to XJapan to Show-Ya to SCANDAL and a whole host of great groups and performers. I actually have listened to Wagakki Band songs so many times I can sing along with Yuko Suzuhana and Machiya. It's been a pleasure and an honor and I have developed a fondness for traditional Japanese music.

Excellent first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. You are absolutely right - they are about more than just the music, they are the complete performance package - great music, great vocals and choreo, great crowd interaction and stage presence, great instrumentalists, great production and staging ... and worth every penny if you can get to one of their live shows.
They are live performers first and foremost, recording artists second - their albums and studio recordings give you an idea of how the songs will sound and what to expect, but you will only hear how they should sound and experience the finished article when you see and hear them perform them live.
'Karate' was the lead single for their second album and as such it is a lot more "radio friendly" than many of their songs - and they can go as technical and prog-y as you like or they can (and do) go in other directions as and when it suits them. They have about 50 songs (and are releasing new songs now in advance of their 4th album due out in March) and you will be very hard pressed finding any two alike.
Back to 'Karate' - it is about fighting adversity, when life knocks you down and everything seems too hard so you're hurt and crying, its about standing up and fighting on, helping each other through the hard times. They used karate to illustrate this as it is a Japanese martial art and reflects their culture - as with a lot of their songs it is also about always moving forwards.
In the video the figures in white were the girls all along and they were conjuring up their own inner demons to fight against. They beat the first, the second knocked them down but they got up to eventually defeat themselves (did you notice the reflections of each of the girls in their own eyes when the masks shattered and it was revealed as them? Not many people spot that).
They did watch a lot of martial arts movies to get ideas for the choreo as they wanted it to look as authentic as possible. Moa catching the fly was a nod to Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid. Mr Miyagi may have used chop sticks (and it may have taken him two or three films before he caught one), Moa caught her fly with her eyes closed - first time.
This song and video won 2 awards. "Best Metal Video in MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2016" and "Best Metal Song in 6th Annual Loudwire Music Awards".
The story of their origins is as a sub-unit of a JPop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin - that group had a school theme and was used as a training ground by the Amuse talent agency for some of their most talented girls in all things related to the entertainment industry (singing, dancing, modelling, acting, stage management, presenting, writing and so on), so the girls (aged 10 to 15) could find what they were best at and what aspects they liked best to concentrate on as they furthered their careers.
BABYMETAL was the brain child of one producer, Kei Kobayashi, a lifelong metalhead who was so impressed with Su-metal's (she is the lead vocalist) vocal power and stage presence when he saw her performing with her previous group called Karen Girl's who sang for the anime Zettai Karen Children, that he had the idea of her fronting a fusion Metal-Jpop band.
He created the heavy music sub-unit within Sakura Gakuin (there were other groups with tennis, cooking, science, baton twirling etc themes) with Su-metal as lead vocalist, Yuimetal and Moametal as her support with choreo, backing vocals, harmonies and in charge of hyping the crowd and they performed under the name BABYMETAL.
The name BABYMETAL is not about their age (although when they started in 2010 they were aged 12 and 11 so it probably did play a part too). The name was chosen for two reasons:
    - to symbolise that they gave birth to a new genre of metal music (kawaii metal)
    - because the writing (and pronunciation) in Japanese is nearly identical to the writing of "heavy metal" (and they love a pun):
    BABYMETAL = ベビーメタル (be-bi-me-ta-ru)
    heavy metal = ヘビーメタル (he-bi-me-ta-ru)
BABYMETAL separated from Sakura Gakuin in 2013 after Su-metal had turned 15 and had to graduate from SG and they became an independent band in their own right.
Sadly Yuimetal left the band officially in October 2018 after a 12 month absence for undisclosed health reasons.
Su and Moa chose to continue as a duo and from 2019 through 2021 they were supported by 3 dancers (the Avengers Riho, Kano and Momoko) who would take turns dancing in the third spot.
In all live concerts since early 2014 they have been supported by the Kami Band, some of Japan's very best session musicians. They first appeared in October 2012 and were phased in gradually over the next year and a half playing a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows.
Kami means god or spirit, so they are the gods of guitar, bass and drums summoned to support BABYMETAL in the Metal Resistance - so they wore traditional white burial robes and corpse face paint.
More recently the robes are black and they wear masks instead of face paint.
For the 2019 US tour and the 2020 UK and Europe tour the Kami Band of the West (American musicians) supported BABYMETAL.
I'm sure you will get a lot of suggestions for more reactions - 'Tales of the Destinies' is the most prog-metal of their songs, but try anything (live ideally, but official video followed by live as you did here is a great way to do it). They will surprise you every time. 'Megitsune' is always at or near the top in fan polls for favourite song and would be a good starting point.

Welcome to the Foxhole and BabyMetal Galaxy.🦊🤘
Fair warning, incoming wall of text.
Interesting you're reacting to their first Karate MV and their last performance, or more accurate a live compilation from different dates of the same live series of concerts at the same venue.
Cool to see you're starting with this one, you also arriving to a special time since BM announced around a month ago their return with some good news about new singles, live performance and album coming soon, the first single is already out and the other one is about to drop today or 18/11 Japanese Time so everyone is hype and excited.
BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal (that's why you see some cuteness there, kawaii means cute in japanese), mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "Baby-metal".
    They are:
    *SuMetal* lead vocalist.
    *MoaMetal* scream and dance.
*YuiMetal* scream and dance, former member since 2018.
    None of them are related.
However if you want to watch how the name "baby" fits on this girls you should watch Doki Doki Morning their first MV or any other song before 2013, they really look very young and so cute.
"Karate" is one of their stronger weapons along with "Road Of Resistance". Is an uplifting song about keep fighting besides the obstacles, and if you take a closer look at the end you'll see in the eyes of their rivals that they're fighting against no other than themselves.
Some fans find anime vibes on BabyMetal songs, the only other song I could find with anime vibes besides this one and their recently released new single"Divine Attack - Shingeki", is "Syncopation" another banger.
They watched several footage before making this song, one of those were "Karate Kid" old movie, that's why you see MoaMetal catching a bug, after this she become the bug catcher expert lol, that's a reference to the movie. The bats and the concrete blocks testing strength is another infamous Karate reference.
Song certainly got some nu metal vibes, that's why you get the Linkin Park resemblance, totally love that band, you'll find more of this nu metal sound in other tracks. I myself find a little bit of Disturbed - Decadence on this, but that's just me.
Budokan 2021 marks their 10 years anniversary celebration and seal the Metal Resistance chapter along with another seal for the group, fortunately that seal is already broken since like i told you before they recently released their new single and kick start of their new era, get ready for new BM side we've never seen before.
They fought against many enemies on this road and many more battles, but they manage to get through all of it, and this song is one of those strong weapons they had, to fight and conquer every metal heart that don't believe in them, along with Road Of Resistance which is highly recommended like i mentioned (just careful with the blocked issues if you go for the official MV live in Japan). Budokan Arena is just a name for general martial arts place, there are other Budokan throughout Japan but this one in Tokyo is the most important and is big, this is the place any artist wants to reach when you're over the top, and they did it already in 2014 when they were even younger and having many struggles so they needed a revenge to pull away those ghosts from the past. Sadly this 2021 live concerts is a half capacity due to covid restrictions and safety measures and crowd wasn't allowed to mosh'sh, crowd surfing or shout without face mask (the crowd sound you hear is pre recorded from the speakers), instead they can stomp their feet, clap their hands or doing a human wave, at least they can do something to participate in this epic and memorable date event.
You also heard the Kami Band playing here, they are a magnificent set of elite musicians who were send to help with the metal sound according to the lore (yep they got a lore), they rotate so probably you won't see some of them in all live concerts (especially the guitarrists).
In this live concerts the members are: ISAO and Takayoshi Ohmura, god of guitars; BOH, god of bass; and Hideki Aoyama, god of drums. And all of them killing it for sure.
Since YuiMetal left the group in 2018 you won't see her after that during live performance, instead you'll see backup dancers, none of them are official members nor sing or have mic, they only dance. Momoko Okazaki was the _avenger_ or third backup dancer filling the third spot in all these 10 live concerts.
Btw not sure about the stage and "beat reacting", so far I know they use backing track to got this programmed with all the visual effects such the lights and pyro.
If you enjoy and like this song then another nice recommendation for your own time and witness a different and unique version is Karate live at Download Festival 2016, is even more epic with the rain and the crowd singing along with them, trust me.
They got a lot of complex songs in terms of technical, one of those is Tales Of The Destinies like some already told you but that one is very special and it was only performed one time so don't go for that song yet, another one is *"Rondo Of Nightmare"* with Mischiefs Of Metal Gods Intro, is a song from first album and is a SuMetal solo, is usually safe to react and you can find that clip at "Kawaii Metal".
Some others recommendations for next reactions:
    - _Catch Me If You Can_ live at Budokan 2014 (you got a safe to react version with subtitles at GuilhermeCait channel) or...
    - _Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!_ live at Legend 1997 in Makuhari Messe Japan when SuMetal is celebrating her 16th birthday becoming a metal goddess queen and leaving her idol jpop form (you can find one at Gans Tomas channel under "Head Bangya" title).
One of the very few songs i like to recommend for first time watching an official MV is "Megitsune" because of the Japanese visual elements unlike some live versions which contains certain parts I don't like the spoilers, such the intro. But of course live is a blast like the rest of their songs.
We know Amuse is very hard to deal with copyright blocked issues, fortunately we can help you with that if you go to BMRR (I'll leave the full title on my next comment) you'll get full original clips of their best live performance with watermarked logo safe to react, look for "Future Plans" vid, follow instructions and you'll get all of them, upload the one with the logo for us and you can watch without it, don't worry for us we already saw all of them.
You can also put some heavy opacity and translucent effect to avoid those issues.
However there are some safe clips to react like those from Legend 1997 or some of Budokan 2014 or previous to this year. Please try to dodge live compilations at all cost, you're not always gonna find well edited and not confusing like this one you found. Also avoid Glastonbury 2019 live performance, the sound is bad and the crowd isn't the usual BM fans.
Nice thing you noticed about the concept of this project which is not only about the music but a whole experience, visually and entertaining, they're not gonna let you down if you don't look always for the metal element.
Thanks for sharing this and see you next time.🦊🤘🔥

Tales of the Destinies probably isn't a good song to recommend to a brand new reactor with no further information, since it has no MV and was only performed live once, and if you search for the live performance on youtube you get a horrible compilation of the pro-shot and some fancams with awful audio, since it gets blocked in its entirety.
Jon, if you want to check out Tales of the Destinies (this isn't a recommendation though, I think if you want to get into BM there are other songs you should go for first), there's a channel called 'Babymetal Reactor Resource' that has the full pro-shot live performance uploaded with a translucent logo to get around the copyright blocking. In the description is a link to watch the original, and then you can edit a logo or a blur effect into your reaction.

Welcome & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 As an eyewitness of last year's Budokan shows at the venue I can tell you that seeing BABYMETAL performance live is amazing experience. You are going to receive tons of information from numerous fans in many countries. So I will give you a brief outline of their international activities. BABYMETAL gained reputation worldwide since 2014. In the latest world tours from June 2019 through March 2020 (prior to the pandemic), they performed live 20 times in USA, 19 in EU/UK/Russia and 1 in Taiwan in addition to 15 in Japan. Last year, they held 10 serial shows at Budokan, a legendary arena in Tokyo taking very strict countermeasures against infection. Then having gone through a hiatus thereafter with unrevealed preparation for a new era to come, they recently restarted their activities by releasing new songs one by one and making an announcement of two concerts in January next year here in Japan and a surprising plan to go on tour in April / May in European countries as a guest performer to Sabaton, a famous Swedish metal band. Please explore BABYMETAL more!

Welcome to te world of BABYMETAL, great first reaction! You are totally right, BABYMETAL is so much more than just music. The outfits, the stage designs, the lighting, the dance choreography and the crowd participation make it the most complete entertainment package ever, in my opinion. And what's even more exciting is that all those elements are not just there, but are on an incredibly high level as well.
Judging by my first impression of you, "Road of Resistance" live in Japan is the video you want to watch. It illustrates all of that pretty well. It has a high risk of getting blocked, though, so pausing frequently and possibly using some semi-transparent video overlay is advisable.
If you ask BABYMETAL's management, the name represents the birth of a new genre of Metal. But I doubt that that's all there is to it, the fact that the girls were 11 and 12 when they started certainly plays a role as well. And maybe even that the fusing with Pop music makes it more accessible to a younger audience as well.
Either way, you are in for a great ride, there's a lot of interesting stuff to discover. Their fusion of Metal and not just Pop music, but other genres as well covers a wide range and never gets boring. It takes an open mind to fully appreciate it, but you don't seem to be lacking that.

Nice reaction. This is BABYMETAL (the caps are their styling, not mine) so a degree of bemusement is to be expected. Here's a bit of background.
The core of the band when it was formed was three girls, Su, Moa and Yui, who were given the stage-names Su-metal (lead vocs), Moametal and Yuimetal (backup vocs and dance). The Svengali figure who provided the initial vision and still steers the band is a producer and metal fan named Key Kobayashi (AKA Kobametal). Yuimetal officially left the band in 2018 and her place onstage has since been occupied by one of a rotating team of three dancers (who mime lyrics but don't have mics) called the Avengers.
BABYMETAL was formed in 2010 when the girls were just kids. Koba's vision was a new subgenre he calls kawaii metal (cute metal). He wanted to combine the broad appeal (and commercial potential) of Japanese idol pop with metal. Early songs were very poppy and immature. The video for 'Doki Doki Morning' put me off this band for years. My loss.
Their live shows are legendary and their command of audience loyalty and engagement is borderline scary. Their studio recordings are played by top-quality session musicians but they do have a dedicated touring band known as Kami Band. There are two versions of Kami Band, the original Japanese group and a group of western musicians who take care of US and European tours. The Japanese Kamis are stellar musicians and legends in their own right and are almost as popular as the girls.
I'm an old guy. I've been a metal fan since Black Sabbath and Judas Priest in the 1970s. This band not only introduced me to a whole lot of excellent Japanese bands, they also breathed new life into my enthusiasm for rock music.
FFS check out more - especially live shows in Japan. But tread with care: once you fall down the foxhole you are doomed.

  • @Killem911
    @Killem911 ปีที่แล้ว +23

Nice reaction and yes Babymetal is not just a band that sings their songs, they are performers. They were formed in 2010 around Su-metals voice because their producer felt that Metal had become stale and boring and needed something fresh. The name Babymetal is a reference to that newborn metal genre called kawaii (cute) metal. The girls were 12 and 11 yo at the time and are now in their twenties (Su soon 25 , Moa is 23 rn). Their live shows, especially in Japan are phenomenal and their company spends a good amount of money into very elaborate stage setups to give every attendee the best possible experience and also add to the songs.
Karate is from their second album Metal Resistance, released in 2016. The song is about not giving up even when you get knocked down. If you watch closely you can see the reflection of each band member in they eye of the unmasked figures at the end of the video. So they were fighting themselves or their inner demons all along. The bats are a karate reference where the fighter has to punch through (usually wood boards) something.
Babymetal is supported in their live shows by a selection of Japans best session musicians called the Kami band. Oversees they have hired a couple of western musicians to support them called the western Kamis. Neither of them is involved in the studio recording (except Leda Cygnus, who was credited in a few songs).
Since you liked the stage setup you might want to check out some songs from the 2014 Budokan shows, or the official mv for “The One”. See you in the next one! 🤘🔥🦊

I believe it was the late 70's when an American band called Cheap Trick recorded an album here and it has been in the top 10 best live albums ever! BABYMETAL gets to play there often because they sell out for every show. Welcome to the "foxhole!" Kitsune's UP! ENJOY YOUR JOURNEY!

You’ll find that every Babymetal song is unique, combining many different genres. They even have some really good prog stuff that I hope you get to at some point. One song is cute, while the next song is Slayer, followed by Dream Theatre. It’s actually crazy. Subbing for more Babymetal!

Great to see that you like them so much! Syncopation is one of my favourite songs. I'm a guitarist, and I love the short solos in this. The bends are perfect and played with emotion, I love that. You should check out their guitarist Takayoshi Ohmura, his technique (especially the right hand) and phrasing are pretty damn perfect.
I would assume that you don't find the more playful side of BABYMETAL equally attractive, but who knows. Two songs (and performances) that are must-see for a musician are "Road of Resistance" (Live in Japan) and "Rondo of Nightmare" (Live at Budokan with the "Mischief of the Metal Gods" intro). Unfortunately, the former tends to get blocked, so you'd have to take some countermeasures. The latter has proven to be pretty safe so far.

Babymetal is a Japanese play on words. Babymetal looks almost exactly the same in Japanese as Heavy Metal. But the Baby refers to the birth of a new genre of metal not the girls ages as everyone assumes. But they were very very young in the beginning. Su is going to be 26 on Dec 20. She was 12 when Babymetal was formed. There are recently formed female Japanese metal bands that have members older than Babymetal. Nemophila for example is incredible. They did a cover of Babymetal 'Megitsune' and Babymetal is like a generation older as a band. But the members of Nemophila are older. Nemophila is incredible. They had their debut album in 2021. Babymetal is releasing their 4th album in March. There is a new single tomorrow.
But even the girls talk about Babymetal as being about their ages. There is a video where the girls watch their very first music video together and Su says 'we really were babies'. I recommend 'Megitsune' it's their best song and second most popular music video.

Nice two for one reaction. Karate is a great song when you get to know the lyrics. The opening I had to find out what moa was saying. Turns out that part is more of breathing technique for doing karate. The part that gets me is when Su starts to sing. Chills. She can even do that live. Lyrically the song is about overcoming difficulties in life. Using the karate as a metaphor. since karate has no backwards moves. Like in life you just can't go back and do it over. Here they sing about how even when life has you down and bleeding. Get back up and go forward. Face life head on. Babymetal songs have a lot of strong positive messages. The part with the bats. Is because for Babymetal one isn't good enough. Challenge yourself. Like in the video the three ghost were them. Challenging themselves to do better. The whole you're, your own worst enemy. I say they cheat got help from friends to get back up. lol Hey what are friends for. Also, they said they watched a bunch of karate movies to get ideas for those parts of the videos. Those old karate movies almost always had a training sequence. It was fun. I dig the way Yui broke the screen when she kicked them too.

  • @gaplauche
    @gaplauche ปีที่แล้ว +2

Good reaction, @Jon.Reacts. You like prog? 😀Babymetal do prog too. Check out the very Dream Theater-esque "Tales of the Destinies" or "Brand New Day" featuring Polyphia's Tim Henson and Scott LePage. They have other more unconventional stuff too, but those are the most proggy. "Rondo of Nightmare" and "The One" are kind of prog too, the latter having been spun off of "Tales of the Destinies" at some point in the songwriting process to become a song of appreciation for their fans.
Btw, that stage is cooler than you think. It goes up and down and has screens all around the sides too. Also, the screen above them lowers down to meet it. At some points it's like a three-layer cake of arcane symbols and fire.

However, I didn't gel with the album and saw some early live stuff that was poor quality and kind of dropped out until a couple months ago. Man, I've missed a lot of great stuff and had no idea how good they actually are live, especially Su's voice and overall stage presence. Not to mention her "metal face" is DEVASTATINGLY sexy... Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, the stage at those recent Budokan shows was pretty impressive. The Budokan is a prestigious invite-only venue in Japan, and the series of 10 shows they did there last year as part of their 10th anniversary celebrations were actually the second time they were invited to headline it; the first was for two nights in 2014 when they were just starting to get big, and the second of those two shows is the most recent live Babymetal bluray that doesn't get blocked on youtube (the one you just watched was actually a compilation of the 5 different blurays that were released for the recent shows, since they all included that song).
I highly recommend checking out some of their earlier stuff to see what makes them really special. Some good options include Ijime Dame Zettai live at Sonisphere 2014, Road of Resistance live in Japan (co-written by Herman Li and Sam Totman of DragonForce, you might hear some resemblance 😂), Headbanger live at Legend 1997 (which was actually in late 2013), Catch Me If You Can live at Budokan Black Night, and Rondo of Nightmare live at Budokan Black Night.

I think what I was tying to say was, musically, this is definitely one of the more cookie cutter songs we've looked at on the channel. It follows a pretty predictable structure, something like: verse, chorus, verse chorus, bridge - drop, chorus and all in 4/4 from what I can tell. Nothing wrong with this, it's just that the memories of the sheer chaos from Meshuggah, Opeth, and Gojira are still ringing in my head. Compared to those bands, this song was right down the middle. Again, nothing wrong with that, especially when you factor in the performance/storytelling aspect from BABYMETAL, they really are in a class of their own. Jinjer, Opeth, Meshuggah and Gojira all put on great live shows, but BABYMETAL's performance was exceptional, even among some of the best metal bands on the planet.
Bottom line, I wasn't throwing shade, just giving my honest reaction to what I was hearing. If I don't like something, I'm not going to pretend that I like it just for the attention. But I genuinely enjoyed this track and maybe even more so because, in my opinion, it was right down the middle. Looking forward to digging into them even more!
