Thank you so much for this video, this has helped me decide in favor of the nitrated steel, as much as I wanted to get the stainless because it wouldn’t rust, I really prefer the shorter sustain and clearer notes sound that is not muddled together. This video is a real gem. Thank you. ❤

I suppose you’re right to a degree … I’ve definitely seen a few stainless steel pans that were a bit dull and did not have a long sustain (not what I’d consider quality pans, especially for what I do) and I actually play two nitrided pans that ring longer than most …. So you are correct; although the norm is accurate as stated, it absolutely depends on the handpan and more importantly, who the builder is ….. A bad builder, no matter what, is not going to make a quality pan…. Stainless or nitrided …Which, is another reason its good … if at all possible … for people to go with reputable builders … plus they then have the ability for easy retuning if ever needed…. 🛸🎶 … 🤗🦋

I am also ‘going zen’ as part of my retiring new me… I was worried that it would be hard on older hands. Can you say a view enlightening words on that?
If the pan is positioned correctly and you’re playing “zen” type music, it’ll be no problem at all. It’s been several years now and I play morning to night … with older hands … and it’s not been a problem. You’ll be fine …🛸🎶🦋

It’s an Axiom, made by Jacob Lee … who is in fact still making nitrided pans as well as those built with other materials. I’ve two Axioms … they’re superb pans!! By the way, thanks for visiting the channel!! Much appreciated!! 🤗🛸🎶🦋
For a quality handpan from a reputable builder, with the basic 9 notes you’re looking at spending around $1,100 to $1,200 … the price increases with the number of notes. You will find cheaper models being sold on EBay, Craig’s list, Amazon etc, but most of those are sub quality pans from overseas that have been sitting in shipping containers for some time and for multiple reasons, I would advise you to stay away from those. You might want to look at the Acolyte series from Nirvana Handpans for a quality beginner pan. That was my first pan and I loved it .. it opened up a whole new world to me. These are life changing instruments!!! 🤗🛸🎶🦋

I can certainly understand that! There’s such a beauty in the voice that comes off a stainless steel pan. But, for me, everything has its place. The stainless steel is what I use for most gigs and meditation …. actually most of the time …. but if I’m rocking out at the drum circle, I’ll use nitrided for sure. 🛸🎶🦋
They both have their own sounds, that’s for sure …. And a time and place …… Nitrided definitely works better for those quick, clear sounds during faster play (ie…in my world, the drum circles), but stainless works better for slow meditative play because of the long sustain…..☺️🛸🎶🦋

I started on a nitrided one, and I am happy with this decision! The clear sound and the short reverb makes it much easier for an absolutely beginner

These are both Axiom Handpans, made by Jacob Lee and they are both C# Celtic Minor handpans … one is nitrided steel and the other is stainless steel.

It depends how its tuned. I have also seen the very reverse. It all matters on the drum.

Nitrided: 3s; Stainless: 4s... Longer reverberation is not necessarily better, especially when you play faster you want a shorter reverb!
