      you could but it would be terrible, chain would be dropping all the time. the original is designed with angled edges on the teeth to aid in shifting, also the teeth are shorter, does not hold on to the chain well.

      +LoveMTB I saw that too. I wanted to be sure, because not everything on the internet is right! And I tried calling these online shops but they don't even have the part there, it's at the warehouse. But I got my answer from SR Suntour. I called them directly.
      The XCT T312 is on their site and for anyone else wanting to do this build for their kid. You can buy directly from SRSuntourna.com and click on shop.
      the XCT T312 comes in the 152mm and 104 BCD. As for the chainrings, the middle and inner chainring are riveted together. The outer and middle are bolted. So you can remove outer and have it as a double, or your can remove the middle+inner chainrings and get your 1x crank.
      So ordered the XCT T312 in a 152mm. Can't wait! I have everything else complete.

  • @davidjames9935
    @davidjames9935 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What is the purpose of this? A single will have more chain misalignment than a double or triple chainring properly shifted. Is the point to easily get progressive gears? I currently have a triple x 7 (21 speed) and I only use the largest 2 cogs with the granny chainring, cogs 2 thru 7 with the middle chainring, and only the smallest cog with the largest chainring so that gives me 9 speeds. In order they are (1,1), (1,2), (2,2), (2,3), (2,4), (2,5), (2,6), (2,7), (3,7). Notice that I never have to change more than 1 gear (either front or rear) as I sequentially shift thru the gears. No double shifting is required. This simplifies things. Also, since I use (2,4) most of the time, the chain is in near perfect alignment cuz those are both the middle gears with a 1:1.7 gear ratio (34 tooth front and 20 tooth rear).

    • @davidjames9935
      @davidjames9935 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** You bring up a good point too. Kids are kinda dumb so making it just a simple 1-7 single shifter is something their simple minds can better comprehend (but why wouldn't they just buy a 7 speed bike in the first place)?. However for adults like me, I prefer the added challenge, flexibility, and range of a 3x7 setup. Actually I am contemplating upgrading to a 3x9 setup so I can use 3 cogs for each chainring (still a 9 speed) but with more range (lower low and higher high). I wonder with a cassette system if the rear cogs have to be sloped as they currently are or if they can alter pattern such as 35,28,22,25,20,16,18,14,10. The idea here it to help keep the chain better aligned. The front chainrings can be selected so that there is a progression of the gears (For example, 3rd gear (20/22) can then go to 4th gear (30/25). I've never seen a cassette where the cogs are anything but sloped (large to small). The front chainrings would be 20/30/40, giving a range of 2x. The rear would have a range of 3.5x. Total range of gears is then 7x (from 0.57 to 4.00). If anyone has tried something like this please let me know if it works cuz I may try it too. The drawback here is if you forget to double shift from 3rd to 4th you can accidentally effectively downshift from 20/22 to a lower gear 20/25 instead of upshift to 30/25, even though your gear indicator may show 4 after the shift.

      ***** As far as a single saving weight over a triple, it is negligible. Just take some french fries and soft drinks away from those kids and that will make more of a difference than the conversion to a single.

      +David James converting a triple to a single sheds quite a bit of weight. 1-2lbs. so i wouldn't say it's negligible. Those steel chainrings aren't light when compared to the 30t N-W from RaceFace.
      the logic behind going 1x vs 3x is that with any multiple front chainring setup there's going to be overlap. For ex. in a 3x7 setup you won't get 21 unique gears. There will be overlap. Going 1x7 means you lose upper and lower gears.
      But going 1x10 (and i'm using 10sp because 8,9&10sp use the same rear hub) you can retain most of the gear ratios from a 3x7, 3x8 or 3x9 setup, and benefit from the weight savings as well as only having to think about shifting the rear derailleur only. And i don't know how many times i've dropped a chain from my front chainring shifting to the smallest ring. A 1x pretty much eliminates that.

      Ray G I disagree that all 3x7s, all 3x8s, and all 3x9s have gear ratio overlap. They can be designed so that doesn't happen. Also who cares about 1 or 2 pounds on a bike? That is negligible compared to the entire weight of the rider+bike.Even 2 pounds is only about 1% of the total weight. If you add 30 pounds to a 3000 pound car will you even notice a difference? That would be like adding 4 gallons of gas and going for a ride and telling me you can actually notice that.

      +David James For me it's a simple case of I never used the big or granny ring on my 3x10, so they may as well be removed. No shifter, no mech, less cables and 2 less rings = weight saving, cleaner looks and less maintenance.
