  • We're asking the same question a second time in Part 2 of the question, "Is It Wrong For Christians To Join The Military?" Today we're going to try to go a little further in answering this question. We did discuss last time that going to war does not necessarily preclude the obedience to the commandment, "Love Your Neighbor As Yourself", because God told the people of Israel to love their neighbors as themselves, but God also sent those same people into war. Learn more in today's Little Lesson!

    Ephesians 6:12 KJV
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Therefore, the weapons we fight with are not carnal, but mighty for pulling down strongholds!

But I tell you to love your enemies and pray for anyone who mistreats you. Then you will be acting like your Father in heaven. He makes the sun rise on both good and bad people. And he sends rain for the ones who do right and for the ones who do wrong. If you love only those people who love you, will God reward you for this? Even tax collectors love their friends. If you greet only your friends, what's so great about this? Don't even unbelievers do that? But you must always act like your Father in heaven.

There’s a difference between loving someone who hates you and loving someone who’s trying to kill you. I love all people but I’m not going to standby and watch someone murder another human or myself. I would be very afraid of gods judgment if I let a person be killed and there was something I could’ve done to stop that wickedness.

      @@D426-y2q Good comment.
Plus people don't understand that there is a difference between the task of a single person and the tasks of a nation. They know their Bibles in part and thus become unbalanced in their views.

An enemy is literally defined as someone who wishes you harm. Jesus opposes lethal self-defense. Read His Gospel teachings and Ephesians 6. Preserve the life of your enemy for his hope of salvation!

Good and valid points. Some don't understand, that there is the Kingdom of God on the one side, but there are earthly kingdoms worth protecting as well, on the inside with the police and from the outside with the military. And of course the two interconnect. Think of Moses, who had to keep his arms lifted up to God, for military victory of the Israelis over their enemy. Plus I know of a Bible school in England praying for hours on end for God to intervene in battles against the Nazis and Fascists of Germany and Italy. Where the head of the school was told by God, when they could stop praying. Only to hear much later that on that day on that specific hour, the battle was won by the allies. Praise be to God!

@@BonusHole Good points, yet John the Baptist speaks to soldiers, to be happy with their wages and not plunder some more.
      Those soldiers are under command.
Plus, in many countries you don't have the luxury of joining the army, but are drafted and forced.
There are a lot of unrighteous battles in the world. But also a lot of righteous ones, fighting against injustice done to a smaller party. It's everything God to stand up for the weak.
If a Christian doubts his nation is righteous, than by all means, try to avoid the military.

Hi, hope all is well. ... Let us remember that faith comes by listening to God's word (Romans 10:17).
    1. Is the American government worldly or part of God's kingdom?
-- Jesus says, "They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth" (John 17:16-17).
-- In the Hebrew language, the word "NATIONS" is identical with the word heathen -- Psalm 96:5; Psalm 2:1.
    2. What are the weapons that Christians should use on their enemies?
-- "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God" (2 Corinthians 10:4).
    3. With love, should we give our enemies food and water, or should we kill them?
-- "Let love be without hypocrisy [play-acting]. ... Repay NO ONE evil for evil. ... If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink ..." (Rom. 12:9-21).
    4. I now have been born from above -- a new birth brings new citizenship. Where is our new citizenship?
-- "For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ" (Phil. @).
-- Are there Christians in this nation? Yes, but ... Biblically, we belong to a kingdom, not a nation.
-- Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world: if My kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight ... BUT now My kingdom is not from here?
    5. What kind of mind are we to have?
-- The mind of Christ (Eph. 2:5).
    6. Do the Old Testament Wars come into play, NOW?
-- Jesus says, "You have said, an eye for an eye ... BUT I tell you NOT to resist an evil person" (Matt. @-48). Because ...
--"The wrath of man does not work the righteousness of God" (James 1:20).
The work of the Gospel is to make peace between men and God--not war. Wherever a heart surrenders to God the spirit of militarism and nationalism must go (June 21, 1898). The person who believes that the voice of the people is the voice of God may want to reconsider:
"And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb ... they loved not their lives unto death" (Rev. 12:11).
    7. Does God regard it as less sinful to kill a thousand men than to kill one?
-- "Though they join forces, the wicked shall not be unpunished; but the posterity of the righteous will be delivered" (Proverbs 11:21).

You've asked this 3 years ago and until now of the others got answers in personal matters, that do not apply in military matters. Some people just don't see the difference, which is there.
Mr. Servant taught you well. You are allowed to join the military. It is perfectly good to ask of God to not have to shoot at people, but join with the other Christians in the military in prayer groups for protection of you and peace where ever you are sent to serve.
Since the government doesn't carry the sword in vain and it is an instrument to kill, I believe it is certainly allowed to protect yourselves and shoot back. As also the police in a country is allowed to shoot at violent criminals.
Yet, if a country is the perpetrator itself and attacks innocent foreign countries, like Germany attacked Poland and started WW2 with that, I do not think it is good to shoot at the others, who are mainly defending themselves righteously against you. I'd pray hard to be able to avoid being send to war and if so, I'd ask to train and serve as a medic.
