    Our mother's name was Kathleen. When our dear father had a little "drop" he would start singing to mother. He could only remember the first line and the rest was nja, nja nja. Mother laughed and father was happy about his declaration of love

    Dear Miss Durbin.........wherever you are, may I wish you the very happiest of birthdays and thank you for the treasures you have given to those of us fortunate enough to have found you here. May God Bless you always for displaying the talents He gave you in such a beautiful way, and without offending your creator nor your audience. Happy Birthday! We love you.

    Born Dec 4 1921 - She still lives today at 89. Such a lovely lady and beautiful voice. The "Hollywood Studio System" was so harmful that Deana refused to perform publicly opnce she left. I would dearly love to hear her sing agin - the REAL Deana.

    My father-in-law used to sing this to my m-i-l. The children remember her singing it to herself after he passed away at a young age. It was played at her funeral. Hearing it again has brought the tears to my eyes. Love the four men backing her.

      @@lesparker5605 Thank you so much, I have just listened to her for the first time and she has a lovely voice. I am 94 and when most of the young singers sing I switch off so this is a very welcome “new voice” for me. I like to think I am young at heart but with music I have mostly outgrown my place.

    Deanna Durbin was the first classical singer I adored. When I was 9, I used to love Elvis and I vividly remember being about 9 years old little listening to Elvis sing this song. Then, TH-cam went to the Deanna Durbin video as a glitch or whatever. I was so relaxed by her gorgeous, warm voice and taken by the beauty, love, and generously kind spirit through which she sang this song. From then on, I adored singing classically.

    FIRST VERSE:
    I'll take you home again, Kathleen
    Across the ocean wild and wide
    To where your heart has ever been
    Since you were first my bonnie bride.
    The roses all have left your cheek.
    I've watched them fade away and die
    Your voice is sad when e'er you speak
    And tears bedim your loving eyes.
    Oh! I will take you back, Kathleen
    To where your heart will feel no pain
    And when the fields are fresh and green
    I'II take you to your home again!

      The old man may be present at the piano, but you know his thoughts are of long ago in a happier stage of his life. The pleasant memories are mixing with the sense of loss of a dear one. A superb bit of acting just sitting there.

    Feel so sorry for all these folks who abandoned their mother country. Only the strong remained!

    • @TheCalicocat2
      @TheCalicocat2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They left because they were literally starving to death; hundreds of thousands died. Only the wealthy and lucky remained. Those who left were strong; they survived the potato famine by crossing the ocean to an unknown future in America.

    • @hamefurgid
      @hamefurgid 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not so. My great grandparents refused to leave Ireland and they were far from wealthy. They moved to Dublin from their little farm and my great grandfather became a wheelwright while great grannie took in laundry to make ends meet. My gran was born in 1898 and she along with her sister went into service in a local big house when she was 14 and my great aunt 16. I have far more respect for those who stuck it out than those who basically ran away. Got to laugh at all these folk who bleat on about their "Irish roots" when they have probably never set foot in Ireland!

    • @stugrant01
      @stugrant01 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When their extended family all died off from the famine, the remaining individuals had no roots to hold them, and no way to survive, so they emigrated. That's why its harder for Americans to trace their Irish ancestry, because their ancestors were often the isolated threads of dying family trees.

    • @hamefurgid
      @hamefurgid 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My great grandparents had no other family other than themselves and their 7 children. Everyone else had either died or moved away. One of my great great uncles did leave Ireland with his wife in 1902 and went to the States. We have "family" there to this day as far as we know but have never met them and have no real wish to.

    It was this much reviled hollywood system that nurtured and gave the world this talent. Without it Deanna would have been just another pretty girl with a wonderful voice. There'sl lots of them around but there is no Hollywood system to turn talemted people into 'stars'. She didnt want to make singing films anymore - she wanted to be regarded as a talented actress but the non-songing films she made were a box office failure. That's when she gave up making films..I am one of her greatest fans!

    • @Susan10093
      @Susan10093 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +The actor, Harry Davenport, holding the "squeeze-box" had a remarkable career on stage and in film, spanning 7 decades. He was 81 when making this film, and then went on to appear in about 5 more films before he died in 1949, at the age of 83. He was quoted as saying why he made so many films in his old age: "I hate to see men of my age sit down as if their lives were ended and accept a dole. An old man must show that he knows his job and is no loafer. "
