    i Watched them all, absolutely great. I feel there should be one more episode. ie, 5.1 routing and mixing.

    • @FilmSoundTutorials
      @FilmSoundTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well I have a couple more videos coming to finish up the stereo Post Productions series, and then I'm planning on making videos about 5.1 mixing, video game audio, etc. But the routing is essentially the same, just with 5.1 Aux Submasters and couple special sends for the LFE. Also, if you're interested, I do have my 5.1 session template for sale on the website: soundtuts.com/products/advance-5-1-editorial-template . Anyways, hope that answers your question!

    Hi! Thank you for tutorial. I noticed that in MOST films that i downloaded (Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Avangers Endgame etc.) when dialogue or foley is sounds the backgrounds (or maybe music) down their volume and after around 2000 seconds release their volume back. So, what is it? Side-chain or maybe master compression?

    • @FilmSoundTutorials
      @FilmSoundTutorials  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's possible. Generally you only have the dialogue side-chain compress the music, having foley side-chain compress music would be unusual. Depending on what type of mix you're listening to (stereo, 5.1 surround sound) it could be compression on the master fader to also make sure the mix stays at the correct volume level. But it's good you're paying attention to things like this!

    • @ЗахарЩербатых
      @ЗахарЩербатых ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FilmSoundTutorials Thank you for your answer
      And i noticed a grammatical error in my message. Sorry for my English :)
      Why it depends on what type of mix I am litsening to?
      All films that i've got is 5.1.

    Thanks for your work! Any reason, if all compressors have the same settings, why you wouldn’t add a compressor only to your VCA dialog track just once? It’s rare multiple actors are talking at once, so a single compressor would work on exactly the same signal as a dozen compressors, which puts less load on the system, and let’s you tweak the settings in one place. What do you think?

    • @FilmSoundTutorials
      @FilmSoundTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right, you could use only one overall compressor on the VCA track if you wanted, and it would put less load on your system. However, sometimes when you're trying to match different types of microphones together (booms and lavs), then you'll probably have to have different compressor settings for each mic. Also, each actor speaks with a different amount of dynamic range, so you'll need different settings for that as well. So that's why I normally put a separate compressor plugin on each dialogue track. Hope that helps!

    • @kenito74
      @kenito74 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking the same, but if I might add a correction.. you can’t apply FX to VCA’s. VCA’s are simply faders, I think you meant Aux Bus, or what I’ve been enjoying a lot in the past 2 yrs are Routing Folders! Save you the processing load while organizing your session! Cheers!

    • @FilmSoundTutorials
      @FilmSoundTutorials  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kenito74 Yep you're right, you can't put plugins onto a VCA track, I meant an Aux Bus. And sure, Routing Folders would work too, but there was some backwards compatibility issues with them when using older versions of Pro Tools when they first came out, so I didn't really adopt using them. Thanks for watching!

    What compressor (for vocals), limiter (for the master channel), eq and reverb(for room and fx) would you recommend using besides the stock pro-tools plugins?

    • @FilmSoundTutorials
      @FilmSoundTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I normally use the Waves or Izotope plugins for compressing, limiting, and EQing. I do like the FabFilter plugins too, super easy to use. For Reverb, either PhoenixVerb or Valhalla. I also used to use Altiverb quite a bit, but not as much anymore. It just depends on the project. Hope that helps!

    • @vitaminpisation
      @vitaminpisation 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FilmSoundTutorials yes! I'm using the same ones for music production. Happy to learn that you don't need to use specific post-production ones.

    Thank you for making these videos! Attack does not tell the compresser when to kick in…it tells it how long to take to reach its maximim gain reduction after crossing the threshold. Whether you have an attack time of 0ms or 100ms, the compressor will kick in when the signal goes over the threshold…longer attack times just make it take longer to fully clamp down on the signal

    • @FilmSoundTutorials
      @FilmSoundTutorials  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, that's right. Thanks for the clarification!

  • @PufftasticJames4
    @PufftasticJames4 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Compressors also make the voice sharp and crispy. Sharp, crispy voices are actually common in anime.

    • @FilmSoundTutorials
      @FilmSoundTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally compressors shouldn't change the EQ of an audio clip, just the volume range. Some old-school compressors do make the audio clip sound warmer or brighter, just generally compressions are pretty transparent.

    • @PufftasticJames4
      @PufftasticJames4 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FilmSoundTutorials Oh right. It's the saturator that makes it sound warmer.

    Thanks for the great series and tips on post production. But some how your tutorials are confusing if compared with each other, for example Mixing a music vs dialogue one of the method is to Manually lower the music volume whereas the other method is to use sidechaining. The problem I see in these different explainations is that we Audio professionals know any of the methods will work but a newbie will be confused what methods to go by, so it would be better if you make a video explaining the right choices of methods to use. Otherwise you are a great guy, I learnt a loy by watching your tutorials you uploaded 4 years back when I was in first year of my film school. :) love from India :)

      Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad the videos were helpful. Yes that's true, I do explain a variety of different methods to do the same thing. So I can see how that can be confusing. But on the other hand, I also think it is good to show a variety of techniques so then the viewer is more knowledgeable about the different types of workflows. But I'll keep that in mind when I make the next video. Thanks for watching!
