Uhtred still has so much growing up to do.
I have to admit Aethelwold's confession is one of the funniest bits in the whole series.
It's easy to forget when watching these shows that Uhtred although our protagonist is nothing but a landless lord from a long way away who happens to be a gifted warrior. Alfred is a king, they are not equals and are not even close to being so. I personally find Uhtred's character to be far more frustrating than Alfred's in this first season, he spends most of the time acting like an entitled child (which he pretty much is at this point).
When it comes to comparisons between this show and Vikings I would describe as slightly different sub-genres. Last Kingdom is Historical Fiction and Vikings is Historical Fantasy - they both live in their own space.
The Last Kingdom has many fictional elements but remains much closer to history than Vikings, especially with regards to King Alfred and his personality. Uhtred is fictional (the real Uhtred of Bebbanburg lived 100 years later) but the show goes over the course of 5 seasons through a set of well documented events. Aethelwold is a historical character too. Season 1 starts with Danes taking York, which is what Ragnar's sons do at the end of Viking's S4 and will end at the moment Vikings S6 ends.
Yeah It's the same Ubba as in Vikings. And Ubba's brother Ivar, who died in Ireland, is the same Ivar The Boneless. This show is a lot more historically accurate in terms of where and when people are, including Ivar's death in Ireland, some 2 years after Alfred became king.
You could say that Vikings was based on the Norse stories. Last Kingdom is based on English History. The Norse stories weren't consistent. They were clearly not written to be a historical record of events, unlike the English writings this show is based on.

Imo, season 1 is okay, but after season 1 or 2, Netflix acquired the series, which also resulted in a bigger budget and it payed off. Enjoy the ride for the coming seasons, it sure does get better and better
They didn’t get the show until season 3 and didn’t replace the showrunner until season 4. Season 4 may have a bigger budget but is definitely the weakest season. Netflix never advertised the show
It is good writing when you understand and support everything Uthred is doing, but you know he shouldnt be doing it because nothing good can come from it.

You really don't have to. The movie doesn't stand up to the series standards, it is rushed and the story would have deserved an entire season. The series' finale is so good, that's the ending I'm keeping in my cannon. As far as I'm concerned the movie doesn't exist lol
A thing to remember is that ABBA had been a legend for a couple decades. He’s older now and mentally rattled by Uhtred.
There are so many battles in this show that were real like the one at Cynwit plus historical character's like Alfred, Aelswith, Odd the Elder, Aethelwold, etc. Uhtred should have gone to Alfred first & then whent to Mildrith & his baby, but he's still young & has alot to learn, he learns as the shows goes.
