Agree with every tips you gave in this video. I would add to it:
    - Slow 5 or 10% zoom in to subtly enhance when a head talk gets more intense.
    - Use the luminosity in your favour, if you have an outdoor clip which is bright, place it after an intense darker section or when you need the pace to gets faster again so the edit gets visually dynamic and more interesting.
    - if you shot in more than one location and you have any drone footage or a wide angle shot, use it at the end of a chapter applying a slow 10 or 15% zoom out to gently tell the viewers that you are leaving that place and drawing them to the next location.
I Iearned so many things from you these years Matti, thanks!

I just started following you and your content is so helpful!!!! I have naturally always been “good enough” at editing to get the job done and has gotten me this far but I’ve recently been trying to be intentional with learning how to be better & faster and make my edits more meaningful. Especially the longer my content gets! Thank you for all you’re teaching!!!

Probably the most common is not mixing sound to the same volume level. There's nothing more annoying than volume going up and down throughout the video. Unfortunately, your vid is suffering from it as well.

I believe that the biggest mistake is to stop learning and becoming too complacent. Delve into a section of the tools that you don't normally use. Maybe there's something that you haven't discovered yet that may improve your workflow, technique, or the overall quality of the video. Also, keep learning about techniques and what other people are experimenting with. Even if you don't learn something new, you may be able to help others in their journey.

I edit a lot just for fun, weekend trips, vacations and so on, and the first thing I learned helping me is to pick the music first. Editing to an existing beat or mood of a song is a lot easier than working with a blank timeline.

Hi Matti, thanks for this video, interesting to hear about these things.
One thing I want to say - why the audio is kinda low, but when there's music - it is 400%? I notice this not only in this video, but in many other creators'. I as a viewer don't like this at all. Especially when I'm watching some kind of educational videos. I should say I watch this on a desktop with speakers.

Thanks for the tips Matti hopefully i implement these methods to spice up my editing process on my TH-cam Channel 💛 editing slightly gets easier the more you do it i guess haha 😅

I thought I had purchased the ideal video and photo editing laptop two Winters ago when I bought the Dell XPS 17 with performance graphics card and 4K touch screen. My big mistakes while editing are getting distracted to easily by phone calls, text messages, etc. it’s a perfect example of what not to do while editing. Put it on silent and just FOCUS! I bought an M1 Mac mini to expedite my editing and it lags with Davinci Resolve 17. So many people raving about it but it just hangs with too many FX and nodes. It blows my mind. I’m saving up and waiting to see how fast the Mac Pro will be.

Lolzzz I love the video creation process (filming, editing, creating thumbnails, etc.) HOWEVER I am currently experiencing this weird complex where I have a series of videos I'm currently working on (one at a time of course cuz my brain can only handle so much), but for whatever reason I do not have the energy to GET ER DONE. I've hit a wall. It's like I know how much work editing is going to take and my brain/body doesn't want to exert the effort. But once I'm in the process, editing flows, so I've been able to bypass that overwhelming feeling, yet it lingers on. Your advice on being too slow (LOL)! I do what your brother does and rewatch WAY TOO OFTEN! From the beginning too because I want to see how it's all coming together. That has to add to the overwhelming feeling I'm experiencing to edit I'M SURE. Thank you for the insight Matti!

Normally I don't comment on your movies and I've been watching them for a long time. They helped me a lot.
To start my story, I have to go back 7 years earlier when I decided to visit the Philippines as a holiday destination, got a visa for a month and arrived. It was my first trip to Asia and I come from Europe (Poland). I liked the Philippines so much that I extended my stay ... And I'm still here. It's been 7 years now and I'm still living my dreams, I started a family, I have a wonderful wife and daughter. And for several years now, through my films, I have been trying to tell the rest of the world what such a simple, peaceful life in the Philippines looks like. My channel only has 17k subscriptions and it's growing. But the biggest problem I have is video editing, my very old computer is not capable of editing, in fact adding any transitions or effects is almost a miracle. Unfortunately, financially, I am not able to afford to buy a better equipment, I built my life from scratch in the Philippines and I try to maintain it as the only person working in the family. It is this rush that would allow me to edit better, show my creativity which is now blocked by the inability to edit.
I greet you from the Philippines.
P.s. if by some miracle you are interested in my story and I am able to win, I will of course be able to cover the shipping costs.

  • @Waffle_Hunter
    @Waffle_Hunter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

There obviously is a difference between TH-cam editing and TV editing and for the most part this video has some good points. As a TV editor jump cuts are a big no-no.
    i.e. 01:15 "Edits are boring"
This is where Broll becomes your friend! Shoot lots of broll to cover up these talking head edits. Shoot the talking head first so you know the subject matter and what kind of broll you need to get.
So for this episode I would offer the following constructive criticism. When Matt is talking about how edits are boring, and you find yourself watching the same thing over again. Place footage of someone editing, acting bored watching something on their tablet, macro shots or a timeline (like he did at 11:21), or a close up of fingers tapping a skip button. 1 minute of a talking head jumping cutting all over the place tends to jar the viewer and takes them out of the video and it can get well boring haha.
That all being said, Matt another great video and you had some great points in there for anyone starting out in editing.
    Cheers!

    • @KathySierraVideo
      @KathySierraVideo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It seems that TH-camrs have decided jump cuts are acceptable or even expected. It still jars me, but tbh it makes life easier when doing talking head vlog style for me to just do the jump cuts.
At first I worked hard to “cover” my cuts with b-roll, but then figured my audience wouldn’t really care. But I do still think covering them with b-roll is a better idea. -
At the same time, I personally hate cliche and on-the-nose b-roll, and I’d prefer all the jump cuts in the world over stock footage of [insert specific example of exactly what you’re saying, without adding any value to the story beyond covering the cut.]
I use jump-cuts AND too-on-the-nose b-roll *because* I’m too lazy or short on time, and my channel is tiny.
But I do feel a little badly about both.

I would use the ProArt Laptop to edit vlogs and photos while traveling, my current laptop chuggs a lot when working on premiere 4k files and also has really terrible battery life. I find that when I have to slow down my editing because of lag or choppy playback I have a lot of problem getting into a flow state while editing so I always dread the editing process. This would help me out a lot to keep creating content for TH-cam!

Hey Matti, You are awesome and I really love your video. I will appreciate if you can move slow and teach us three things
    1. Lighting (15 videos or 1 hour video)
    2. Gimbal Movement (5 videos or 30 minutes video)
    3. Telling A Story ( 5 videos or 1 hour video)
and sell the three things as a course, and share the secrets in videos. I believe a number of people will buy your course and make sure that the price is less than or equal to 70$ because in South Africa when you start to price the course 97$ you are only making it possible to filmmakers with clients not the one who are starting. So seeing your course in future will mean alot.
    Secondly:
A number of people been talking about Davinci, Final Cut Pro and Premier Pro. What is your take on Pinnacle Studio and Vegas Pro.
I personally think, people will say a certain is better than other because the are used to that studio. Please take a week and study Vegas Pro, also check other TH-cam on how they use it and also try to use it your way and provide us a honest feedback on how do you feel about Vegas Pro 19. I think that software is great. To be honest with you, been watching videos on people using Final Cut Pro and Premier Pro, and I will be able to apply the same effects or edits on Vegas Pro. They also have a very great colour grading and motion tracking tool.
Please, do check that during your spare time and do compare it. Please, do not be the people cause they are used to Premier or Final Cut and bad talk the software come with your honest review and feeddback.
    Thirdly:
I will appreciate if I can win the laptop. I stay in South Africa and I have been working so hard to get a good laptop for editing video that will not glitch when I play back the video that I am editing. Since last year been budgeting to purchase the 'Tomorrow Filmmakers' course but there is something that jumped in my mind. After getting and understanding all the skills will you be able to edit pro videos. And the answers was No, cause after budgeting for that I need to re budget for the new laptop. So I will appriciate if you guys can give me a chance and I win the laptop, and I promise within 2 weeks I will be able to videocall you on Facebook/Instagram and I show you guys what I have done with the laptop and send you my work work.

This past year I got into wildlife photography. I'm starting to dabble in video editing too and was looking at this laptop to replace my cheap 6 year old PC. Biggest mistake I made was not taking the leap because I was scared I wouldn't be good at photography/filming and now I'm finally doing it after years of watching Matti, Pete, Casey etc. While I know I don't need a new device to do any of that it's still make it a lot easier!

Coming from a journalism background I find it difficult to use cuts in the middle of a sentence. It just seems like it’s taking away from the natural flow of the interview. @adamflashphotos, would definitely just use the computer to edit videos. Mine is super slow and can barely handle small edits with Premiere Pro. Would love an upgrade!

    Bonus.
    Sound.
Your sound is off on this 1.
When outside in street it was loud but the recording inside was off.
I had to turn youtube down when outside then up when outside.
Normally your at +1DB and here your at -6.4DB
It's comfortable at this level but the levels weren't consistent throughout the video.

Excellent tips. I didn't read all 615 comments, but I did scroll pretty far down. I'm sure someone else posted, but I'll post anyway. Mistake 6 - Proofread - Used "4" a 2nd time as Mistake 5 ;) Otherwise, another excellent video!

@627media - These are great tips - thank you! Did you say in the video that we should say what we would do with a shiny new Asus? I am considering upgrading from FCPX to DaVinci Resolve and my M1 MacBook Air with 8GB RAM is not going to cut it (also, I am a former oil painter with very fussy attention to color...an oil painter turns video maker NEEDS to use editing software called DaVinci - it just makes sense - am I right??!!?). Most of the video work I have done is for a nonprofit that my wife and I operate although I have done some paid gigs to try to support our nonprofit work overseas. Thanks for doing these give aways from time to time!

Mistake in editing videos having the music WAY too loud. Beginning of the video I had the speaker volume at 2 and TH-cam itself at a volume where the next tick was mute, and it was still blasting.

So any advice for a gamer who's learning editing more out of necessity? Frankly it's boring and not my forte. However I will not let this stop me as I am my only editor which I can afford.

Another one! Yeah when I got started in editing my greatest concern was actually wasting it back without wanting to headbutt the monitor...thank goodness I have great role models in this space to motivate me! Keep up the amazing work! What I would use the laptop for would be to aggressively tackle my dream of cresting instructional videos for kids to learn music production and djing through engaging storytelling. It would be great to help our new generation take their creativity forward!

really valuable tips .. i want this laptop 💻 bcus i am a video editor from India and a content creator on youtube and i hv a desktop where i edit my videos, but as i don’t hv a laptop i get limited in my work as i am glued to my home bcus of the desktop. A laptop will really give me the flexibility to edit anywhere outside my home. I can take the laptop and travel and get the videos done on a go. Now i’m really not able to travel to places as i hv to be in my home to edit client videos. The laptop will really boost my productivity.
Yess .. i’m not in US, i’m in India and can’t afford a laptop now, but then too i want to apply if u consider the possibilities and my need for it.
