I've owned a highly optioned 2004 Eddie Bauer model for about 10 years that I just can't bring myself to sell. Very few issues until the last year. New O2 sensor, replaced alternator and battery and new brake pads and calipers. I still love this truck!
My mom has a 2006 Explorer, bought it new, 120k miles on it, a few minor mechanical issues, but she's still going strong! I'm looking for an older model for a first car :)
My parents owned an 05' Explorer XLT, with the 4.0 SOHC V6 and 5 speed auto, besides the $3,000 transmission repair, it was amazing. R.I.P. (it was totalled 3 years ago)
I just bought a 2003 black ford explorer limited about 3 weeks ago... I LOVE IT! I will more then likely be getting another Explorer when ever I decide to sell this one to get a newer one :)
The car they showed for eddie bauer is not an eddie bauer, mine has two tone interior and 'wood' trim. Theres looks like an XLT with the painted trim. There were a lot of options for these cars! Some XLTs were cloth and no rear a/c, and some had leather, rear air, parking sensors, sunroof etc.
@1doesntlikeapplepie No, we borrow the cars from local car dealers. When we create these used car reviews, we talk to current owners, look for issues on owner forums, spend some time driving several examples and look at other data like recall history and safety ratings.
Had my 04 for almost 10 years. Currently 214k on the v6 4.0 motor. Transmission was replaced at 170k. Other than the trans, has been very reliable. Only regular maintenance and some smaller replairs I did my self. Rust is minimal for a 15 year old truck here on the salty roads of new England. Transmissions are the only weekness I guess but getting 170k out of one I would consider decent.
People act as if cars don’t have problems at all eventually no matter what car you have they will have their fair share of problems eventually, granted some have more than others.. simply if your do the maintenance you’ll be fine.. once you get to the point when your paying more for repair costs then the car is worth time to junk it. Just like any other car..
it was a good review.. I own I 2005 ford explorer xlt v8.. I absolutely love this truck.. I've had it for 2 years now.. only thing I replaced is the transmission with a brand new one from the Ford dealer which was a bit costly ($4000) and now it runs perfect.. if your gonna buy one make sure to check the transmission first they tend to have a lot of problems.
Need some help here, My XLT '05 is a UK imported Explorer badged with Platinum sport. Im trying to look for upholstery replacements but i cant find my truck in specific. Its got the cologne V6 and a centre mounted automatic trans shifter.
Did they ever fix the automatic transmission breakage issue on the V6? Seems to me there's 2 kinds of V6 Explorers on the market: ones with newly replaced transmission, or ones with current transmission issues. $3000 garage bill pending.
that's because they are ultra picky with maintenance. If you neglect them for a second they fall apart fast, however, a well-maintained 2wd can last about 500k miles before needing serious engine work. The v6 engine was designed in Germany so the stereotype of picky european engines apply to this car
@yummy1234098 The previous generation of Explorer had the same rollover rating, but the 2002-2005 models did improve in other areas, like front passenger protection. For comparison, the 2003 Chevy Tahoe (another truck-based SUV) had the same 2-star rating in 4x2 rollover tests (although it did get 3-stars in 4x4 rollover tests).
Nice car till 80,000 plus then goodbye Auto transmission 8/10 times. (mechanic) but they do have almost as much cargo space as the guys pants in this video. ;)
wait untill your transmission quits. They don't nickname them exploders for no reason. We had a 2004 Explorer in the shop the other month with a bad automatic transmission, and the owner decide to scrap it for parts.
I was at a used car dealer and they wanted 9k for a 98 or 00 ford explorer...I now see that was over priced but I still want it because it had 8 seats...2 front, 3 middle and 3 rear.....I really wanted it and still do but right now I have a Kia Sportage thats getting me from point a to point b.
I was looking at a mid 90's ford explorer, when I bought my 97 chevy blazer, but chose the blazer because it was more roomier than the explorer. Looking at buying a 95 explorer, and wanted to know if the drivers seat has more room now, or is it still crampy? I'm a big guy, and have no problems getting in and out of my blazer!
NEVER buy this vehicle in the 4.0 v6 YOU WILL BE SORRY!! don't be a Joe . Timing chain cassette failure ...harmonic balancer failure, intake valve spring failure , electronic transfer case failure ....ALL BEFORE 120,000 !!!!! STAY AWAY
i had a 2004 explorer that i really loved..had to replace all 4 tires after 1 year,,then 2 weeks ago the transmission..2 days ago it was in a very minor accident in which a corner of a parked car was hit at 10 mph going down my street,it spun around and flipped over..really!, ive since learned of the long and tragic history of flips on the explorers
Dont be tempted by its price. Its a problematic unreliable money eating vehicle. I changed its entire gearbox twice in one year. Its comfortable and spacious...but also require a spacious bank account and an owner who has nothing else in life to do..
You probably did it wrong just like everyone. Without the software updates, updated valve body, and pump it will fail. Proper break-in procedure along with the correct fluid level is a must. More than 80% of the ones I've worked on were all done wrong
I have a 2003 Eddie Bauer edition and it's still going. I love it!

+Spreadsheetczar Thanks , i just bought the same year for $3.900. Seems like a good machine.

Best SUV I have ever driven

Thanks for the kudos! Congratulations on your new car!
love my explorer mines the limited v8 4x4 I have flow masters roof rack. and a small suspension lift. also 166k miles still runs perfect.
Keep these type of videos coming. There are very informative.

My sister has '03 Explorer limited v8 and 4x4. It has just over 200k miles on it and its still in pretty good shape.

When was this filmed?
These gen3s are either nothing but problems or bulletproof

I got mine yesterday and it's so beautiful and sexy and smart and blue
What would you say the mpg is for this vehicle?
is it true the 2005 has slightly better gearbox parts?
It's decent just get the 4.6L

the 02-05 explorer only has 2 star rollover rating...how is that an improvement?
La mejor!! Ford Explorer xlt!!

No. you did not flight your explorer by hitting the corner of a parked car @ 10mph. Not a chance that information is correct.
Yes I did..would you like to see police report..witness statements or pics ..don't talk shot about something you have absolutely no knowledge of
