  • If You Skate you know the nervous tension before a roll. These are the strategies I have developed over my career to turn nervous energy into excitement, and fear into fuel.

2-5 minutes of warm-up is a greatest confidence booster once you put them on and realize that your balance is not as good as it was at the end of last session.

For me, as an almost 40 year old male living in the north of the U.K, my fear stems from the perception of others toward skating in general. I often have to work on overcoming that for days before I step out the house. I still need to work on that. Public confidence.

I bought my first pair of roller blades 2 weeks ago. I've been going back and forth in my room. Today I fell while trying to do a jump in place but I kept trying and kinda got it. I'm not going outside until I have protective gear but I'm so freaking happy to finally have them.

5:31 i HATE that type of pavement, the slots between each slate are like a train track, you have to be extra careful to tackle them diagonally or on a one-legged wiggly motion otherwise you get stuck and can fall down
And you're right, the long smooth stretches feel like a payoff for the bits we have to atruggle on
    Great and insightful video!!

This video is so depressing and also inspiring to me right now. I have a small trauma and I live in very seasonal climate. My best chance to get on skates is on early to late November, basically it's too late. Keep creating your content, it inspires me and many others. :)

You can go iceskating. So you can at least build up balance and learn some Tricks. There are some differences to inline skating. But a friend of mine she was iceskater as child and its insane how fast she can Adapt to inlineskating ....

Watching this video reminds me how I started my own skating routine last year in my early 30s after 18 year brake from inline skating. There was that fear and nervousness of city roads and I was not very consistent with my skating throughout last year. This year I am slowly gaining confidence on skates and on London streets as the weather gets better.

Fear is just letting uncertainty take over your ability to perform. By learning to embrace the uncertainty and know you get to control your fate, you can channel that fear into fuel. Amazing video as always. Keep it up!

I figured my pre-skate fear was peculiar to me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. As a fitness/speed skater living in a much smaller city, my fears center around inattentive or aggressive drivers, loose dogs, and road hazards. Summers are very hot where I live, so I often skate at night too, which tends to rev the pre-skate anxiety. But as soon as my wheels hit the street, the fear usually goes away. Last year I developed a fear of downhills. Strange. Is it my age (early 50s)? It came from out of nowhere while descending a hill I had skated countless times before. I thought I was going to fall. I felt like I was going to fall. I worked through this new fear over a few months, and it mostly went away (as of late last fall). One day I may crack for good, but for now I refuse to let fear tell me I can't do something (when I know I can).

Great video, Bill, and an important topic.
I’m often apprehensive before skating, and that initial ‘settling in’ period can be absolute torture. But that flow-state is unmatched when skating compared with any other sport I’ve tried!
Personally, I’m not a fan of skating with music as I find it detaches me from the flow. I prefer to run with music as it takes my mind off the run, but with skating, my mind needs to be on the skate, and I find music can dilute that and drown out the sounds of the environment.
I completely agree about the commonality between cyclists and skaters. Live and let live, I say. 👍

I have a rough past and did my time and have bullet wounds and stab marks from life choices. But Everytime I go city skate or downhill skate. I'm just like if it's my time it's my time, fuck it. Sounds reckless but it's a lot like riding a motorcycle. As long as you're aware of what could happen you kinda chill and be more alert.

    Hey Bill!
I've been skating for 5 years and I've been on almost every road you could imagine. I like long distance skating through the countryside, through villages and forests with many uphills and downhills. I've been in some very dangerous situations, skating downhill where the road curves, over 40 or 50 km/h where I thought at some points that I would fall because I couldn't brake hard enough and only my reflexes saved me to stay on the skates.
I never had fear on skates, even in those most dangerous moments. Why? I'll tell you the secret.
Fear is useless. This is only information which I heard from a very reliable source. But, you need to realize that it is true. Believing in the information will not liberate you. You have to think about it for days, weeks, months, like I did. You have to remember your life experiences and make new ones to test this information. You have to try to dispute the information that the fear is useless. You need to think about how can fear be useful. After some time, you can conclude that there's nothing useful in fear (If you think fear can save you from doing stupid and dangerous things you are not able to do, that is sense, not fear). At that time you have severely weakened a hold the fear has on you. When those fearful thoughts come again, you can dismiss them easily by remembering your realization. And by remembering that when you have no fear, your mind, your body, your energies are working at a much higher level and you want to have that higher level when you find yourself in more dangerous situations to be able to deal with them more effectively.
I don't think everyone can come to this realization. You need to have a very high level of honesty towards yourself to be able to accurately feel what you can and can not do, and what is your potential. And to come closer to reality. This is not for believers, but for truth seekers.
At least think about it. It's worth trying to break the walls of fear. Life is much more beautiful without them!
    Love your channel btw! 🙂

Thanks so much for making this video. I'm an ice skater and recently decided I will not limit myself to the rink and just go around on wheels. But the ground is... not smooth, to put it mildly. It's way more difficult than I thought, and VERY scary. I take motivation from your videos, you can skate over any sh*t, and you don't even use extra large wheels. I thought the ground is difficult for me because I need bigger wheels, but I guess it's just a matter of practice. Good to know that even you my inspiration have fears of city skating. I'm still scared as hell, but I'm twice as much determined, I want to go anywhere and everywhere on skates.
