    Questions for the podcast:
    - how much time a week do you spend for exercise and skating? Do you avoid training legs on the days before you plan to skate?
    - what's your resistance training like? Do you often go to failure? How long and heavy are your workouts?
    - Any tips for stopping in narrow places?
    - Just how tight show my skates fit my feet? Is it ok to leave a bit of movement? I feel that "the right fit" isn't really sustainable for longer sessions
    - what's been your experience with 90mm wheels?
    - what's your heart rate like during a normal session? Does it look like a session of cardio, or lower and with breaks?
    - How do you set up your frames? I noticed that moving it forward makes powerstops easier
    - do you find that powerstops on 110 are more difficult? Any advice to make them easier and as reliable as with the 80mm?

    What a great topic. I would not have been able to skate uninterrupted since 1988 without a good strengthening and stretching routine very similar to what you demonstrated. Focusing on muscles that oppose the ones that are overtaxed when skating has helped me keep a healthy balance of core muscles in the pelvis area and has kept my lower back pain free. A short routine of upper body strengthening and stretching exercises has also protected me from numerous potentially serious shoulder and head injuries. Now still enjoying inline skating nearly every day… I had to learn all of this stretching and strengthening stuff the hard way over many years, and you summed it up in one video. Thanks for putting together these great quality videos. I am sure they require a lot of work. PS: my wife and I love your doggie 😊

    Ever since I broke my fibula and did PT- everything you’ve mentioned is so so true, especially as you grow older and still want to skate (or hockey) and have fun! People take advantage of their bodies, and sometimes think they’re invincible when they’re younger- great advice 🤘🏻

    my number one would be stretching. i didn't start seriously stretching until my mid-20s. post-workout to me is way more beneficial for recovery than pre is to prevent injury. do both if you have the time, but for me, post is most beneficial. when it comes to lifting, I like to do so for strength and mobility. love lifting and walking with sandbags.
    thanks for sharing, Bill.

    Great content and topic, Bill.
    I believe in a balanced approach to physical well-being, especially if we want to stay healthy and injury-free in the future. I recall reading that pro-runners only spend about 40% of their time running, the rest is dedicated to strength, mobility, and recovery.
    Personally, I resistance train 4-5 times per week and focus on mobility patterns everyday. Strength and mobility are especially important as we age and, let’s face it, we’re not getting any younger! 🙈
    Podcast Qs: 1. What, if anything, demotivates or puts you off going out to skate?
    2. What skills or improvements, if any, do you want to work on in the near-future?

  • @haroldwebb9237
    @haroldwebb9237 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Being about the same age as you Bill, I can't agree more with your segment on strength training. I've also been "fit" and done lots of cardio on skates and other, but when I started being serious about weights (2-3 times per week), my overall fitness went through the roof.

    I love how Bill set off to make a video about healthy habits to build for longevity when skating, but instead made a r/aww video with him an Ernie playing guitar and vocals =)
    I remember you had a great AMA from reddit and a lot of good questions there. I think making a post asking the Inline community for questions would cast a bigger web on the skating audience to bring in more questions.
    What are the best/ your favourite times for skate sessions? Early mornings? Mid afternoons? Rush hour (in Toronto?!?!?)
    Do you have any Pro-tips for gear longevity? Like how this video has good information on how to keep your body in top shape, do you have any tips/ tricks Lifehacks/ Protips from tying skates to cleaning your wheels, anything at all the newer generation of skaters should know about that will help out those of us skating on a budget get more out of our gear.
    Have you considered making a video about being unafraid of failure when learning new things on skates? Sometime I see that holds back a lot of newer skates - whether on inline or on ice, is that they are afraid of falling. I think cool video idea would be for you to show your progress when learning something new and talking about your mental strategies translating physical feedback of why you fell into mental changes that then loopback into physical changes.
    What is your homemade "Breakfast of Bill" - When you're at home and want to treat yourself, what's your go-to meal you make for breakfast? Also while on the topic of food - what's your favorite weekend brunch joint in Toronto?
    Lastly: Cakes or Pies? Muffins or Cupcakes?

    Well done dude! I love that you're picking up such topics. I would add cold shower to this as well, but this is also a very specific tool. It helps to recover, but reduces gains - i.e. if I want to recover fast and my muscles to be ready for next 60km run the next day - cold shower is great tool. But if you want more gains and grow muscle, cold shower should be avoided for 24 hours and more time for recovery will be needed. Etc. Still thanks for reminding other things as well.

    Thanks for awesome video Bill. I want to visit sauna now, it’s been a while, I completely forgot how nice it feels. As for side activity I tried bouldering a couple of month ago, it’s a really good workout for your upper body and it has similar effect with skating: once you start it’s hard to stop. Some great essential tips to obtain your skating potential for Hyper-Performance skating. I just recently bought one of those "knuckle" roller things. It's a little painful at first if you're not use to it, but the relief that you get afterward is worth the discomfort by far. My objective this year is definitely more stretching before and after skating and more leg resistance at the gym. My podcast questions are: Have you noticed any negative effects from the intense cardio that skating offers, such as muscle cramping pain in the morning? Do you take any vitamins or protein shakes to help enhance yourself? If so, what do you recommend? They say age is just a number seize every moment you can and Go Skate! THIS IS THE WAY!!!

  • @lpseem3770
    @lpseem3770 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is one of the best lessons for skaters. Stretch, skate, run, repeat. (-: As of 41, I can not recommend stretching enough. Skating for 4 hours is no problem, but it is not a way to improve. Only for sweaty back, hurting legs and broken ribs.

    Great video mate, fitness and health is so important and people always overlook it. Intense bodyweight training can be just as good as weights for some muscle groups as well, so for anyone out there who can't go to a gym, just do bodyweight movements to start! It WILL pay off.
