  • Black Oxide is a chemical process that converts the surface of a steel part to a black oxide and allows it to be impregnated by a thin layer of oil which prevents it from rusting. Since the oil is in the surface it no longer feels oily to the touch. The oil in the black oxide layer prevents it from rusting. In this video I will show you how to do professional quality black oxide finishing in the home workshop. Black oxide is normally only available as a commercial process but there are now kits available for use in the home workshop. Black oxide is very common on nuts and bolts this is because the process does not change the size of the parts which is very important with threaded fasteners. The impregnated oil also helps to prevent surface galling. In my opinion black oxide is ideal for tools and machine parts that are not directly exposed to the elements. The black oxide does not provide indefinite corrosion resistance but for things like tools and machine parts that spend there life in a dry workshop then it is an excellent option.

    It looks like a little strainer basket thing with a handle (a kitchen item) would really come in handy here. You see them in Asian markets in many sizes, from "cup" size to "Ramen Restaurant" size. I don't know what the sizes are! But it seems like one could be easily found that would fit into the yoghurt container say, and eliminate all that fishing around. This seems to be working! Rust is a major awful issue where I live, so of course I'm interested.

    The process and resulting finish are also known as bluing. (See Wikipedia, for example.) The color (colour) is, admittedly, often more black than blue. Bluing solutions/kits are available as gun supplies in the USA.

    Thanks for the excellent vid! Do the chemicals last beyond the one job? If so, how much can you get out of a kit?

    • @Handmadeextreme
      @Handmadeextreme  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bill, Yes they do. The manufacture of the kit estimates approximately 3-4 m2 per litre of solution. So approx 1-2 m2 out of the 0.5l kit I use in the video. You can get different size kits and also just get refills of the individual chemicals as they get used up. There is a good FAQ on their website. www.black-it.co.uk Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the support.

    How would I go about blacking just the flat of a blade? Will coating the bevels in wax work or am I better off blacking the whole blade and then sanding the bevels back?

    Thanks for the review. Shame they don't ship outside the UK. Does it create a layer of Fe2 O3 iron oxide?

    • @Handmadeextreme

      As far as i'm aware yes, but i'm not that informed on the exact chemistry. If you are looking for a kit outside the UK try searching these keywords. Black oxide, Black Phosphate, cold blue and gun blue. They are all very similar. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching.

      Not that I am aware of sorry. I'd probably use something like a flapping disc on a grinder to whip off the top surface.

      You can just do it by hand using a ScotchBrite pad, the maroon one would do the job well.

    If you can't find a kit in your country you can boil your steel parts in water to which about three cups of Ammonium Nitrate has been added. Be warned to add the nitrate *only* in a well ventilated area as it gives of copious amounts of ammonia gas. Boil for as long as it takes for the parts to go black. Also be aware the authorities may have a heightened level of interest in your affairs.

    Will be getting this,, BUT I have a number of questions / comments , not to criticize , but to help . You mention not to cross contaminate the chemicals , But with the rinse in the same water there will be , how ever so slight ,,,, a cross contamination of the chemicals & delusion with water with every dip to each bucket ... , I spent years doing nital etching to detect burns on gear teeth after grinding , part of that process is clear water rinse in running water , quick dip in alcohol that dried fast & leaved the part clean for the next dip in the next bucket,,,, a low pressure air gun can speed the process , but don't blow in the direction of the other buckets ,,,

    I tried this kit, the results weren’t great it wasn’t a thick black finish and rather a thin black finish and what scares me more is that the chemicals in this kit are labelled as cancer causing chemicals stating not to breath in the fumes or get on you’re skin, for the health risk factor to finish ratio I wouldn’t bother to try this again
