    I am relieved to hear that you were able to process more roosters; it can't be easy or pleasant...but YOU DID IT!!! Thank you for posting; you are appreciated.

      We're very proud of ourselves :D. And we think it will get 'easier' the more we do it, we do need to tweak a few things, but it went quite well!

    Nissa, so glad you were able to conquer the rooster problem. I am amazed at all the work you all do. You are very efficient and get things done. Way to go!

      I'm so glad we were able to as well, we got all eight done in a matter of an hour or two and just got through the whole process and done and dusted, very happy that we can now add that skill as a regular thing, and whilst it still wasnt the most pleasant thing it was very doable! Slowly but surely! :D

    I LOVE the website. You have set it up well. It was easy to navigate. It made sense. You could understand it. I loved the font you chose as well. It is pretty but not prissy if that makes sense. You’ve done a fantastic job putting it together. You can tell you have put a good bit of thought and work into it. I’m so excited for it to get done and use it!!!!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really wanted something that resembled my handwriting, I created a font using my handwriting but it doesn't quite flow yet, I might replace it as I tweak it a little hehe, but for the moment, this one is very similar :D
      Thank you! Lots more work to go, but it will be so worth it once its all done! :D

    So many good things going on! I appreciate your ability to find the good even in not-so-good situations. As for grease stained clothes, even if the grease has been washed/dried into place, just squirt some Dawn dish detergent (must be name brand) into the stain, let it sit and soak for a while (up to a week works 😂) then rewash. This has rescued many clothes that were destined for the bin! ❤🇨🇦

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually think I've heard that, and I think Costco sells Dawn brand, I think it has SLS in it so we can't use it for everything, but as a stain remover that would prob be fine, I'll have to give it a go! :D Thank you :D

    • @heatherbolichowski1910
      @heatherbolichowski1910 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OurSmallFootprint I checked and sadly yes Dawn does contain SLS which is probably why it is so effective, and also SLES which is supposed to be less irritating. Hopefully your fam & water system can handle the small amount that would be needed as stain remover! Plus of course it goes in your regular wash after the stain soak so that should remove any traces of Dawn.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@heatherbolichowski1910 yes I think as a stain remover it would be fine because it would then go through a wash and yes the sls is prob why it works so well heh! Darn family members with sensitive skin!

    The link to the website worked well. Recipe looks lovely, all the things you need. I like the hints and tips. I also enjoy learning the reasons “why” in regards to cooking. I love watching your face light up when you said about buying those beautiful bread pans.😍 Even though i try to be very frugal and consider every purchase, sometimes beauty is needed especially when we do the same job every day of every year. A little beauty keeps up turning out the great food . Im so happy youre on the mend . ❤Those chicken pens are so well designed and thought through. Plenty of space , im going to guess at least double what a "free range" commercial hen is allocated, at least! That U for practicality and bird safety, is fantastic . Our current front loader works fantastic, but the same problem, no 30 min wash and for a few of my fam , the 15 min doesn't do enough. Im sure i tried everything. The lowest temp setting is 30*c too. When we replace it , im going to have to be aware of that. Thanks for sharing lovely ❤❤

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine has the ability to turn water temp off so it just runs at whatever temp comes out of the tank, I made sure of that one knowing how cold the water out of the tank is sometimes lol, I think i'll trial the 15mins on lightly soiled stuff and see how it goes, it will just be a matter of having to divide the washing a little more than we currently do!
      I have eyed off those pans for so long lol, but as you say, trying to validate that expense was just not happening, and then the sale and oh, I'm so glad I splurged, the bread out of them was so wonderful! and I think they'll be able to be put into my summer rhythm for fresh bread every day or two over summer! :D

      @@OurSmallFootprint The cotton cycle on ours takes ~3h20. You can put in around 9kg. There are shorter programmes available, too. Some are just over an hour but you can only wash 4kg then. There is a quick wash option. 15 or 30 minutes. I only use that for my bathing suit and pool towel after my trips to the pool, and then every now and then I give those a proper longer wash.

    I was wondering how kitty (Ikio?) was going. Nice to see him. Washers. What an ado. You can do so much research b4 you buy but never know the realities until you go to use. I have my own disappointments with my washer. Some of the too many options takes hours. I use a 28 min wash option. But, overall happy. I keep telling myself the bigger load capacity, I am doing less loads and therefore really using less water overall. I do my spin at 1200 and don't use the 1400. Works well for me anyway. Glad you are dealing with the roosters, and the pen set up is looking great. Nyssa I am just like you my pants become a hand towel I have around the house clothes and going out clothes. Congrats on getting the some roosters done thats a hard thing to do. I want to get some more raised beds I was looking at some they were 2 ft × 4 ft for $64 i would like them to be 4 ×10 ft. Take care and stay safe.

    In our hybrid fridge I put in a moisture absorber pack to try to keep the humidity even. I have a couple so I am thinking of swapping them out, rotating them so that one can dry out while the other is in the fridge. I also thought of putting a rack on the bottom so that the excess moisture doesnt seep into fruit boxes for instance. Since putting in the absorber pack, there is still some moisture pooling on the bottom but I have noticed that the brown paper grocery bags that are in there are no longer softening with damp like they had been.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, the moisture absorber is a great idea, maybe even just some bicarb in there would work well! We have the plastic collapsible crates on the bottom and they have a open grid and seem to sit just up off the surface of the bottom, so I haven't found that to be too much of an issue with things getting sodden on the bottom or anything, works kinda like a rack I suppose!

      Definitely seem to have gotten over the hump that we had in place, there's still things we'll tweak as we go, we were a bit too far from the chicken pens and we had to keep chasing shade lol, so maybe we need a pop up shelter! But otherwise it went really well!

      Yes a pop up shelter works well.. mum did that before a processing area was built with a little pen at the side..

    first time in this channel and i like the sound of the rooster in the background. I think is time to bring back the apron, it will clean your hands dry and clean and help with keep your clothing clean while working in the kitchen, another apron for working with the animals and/or garden.

      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome Evelyn! :D
      I'd love to be an apron wearer, but I just don't reach to put them on, I'm always flicking between so many things that I hurry in to do something and out to do something else :S. But I think too I have trouble because of my belly, getting them to fit well without just making me look pregnant lol (because after 6 babies, I still look 6 months pregnant no matter what I do lol)

      Someone else mentioned that too! I'll have to take a look :D. I do have a little temp monitor in there, but it is hooked up to bluetooth on my phone and I was most recently using it for the hot house lol, so the alarms are not quite set for fridge related things! :D

    We recently moved rural in the uk and have hatched our own chickens :) our youngest hatch will be of age for processing in September and we have about 12 to do (depending on how many hens/cockerels we get) from 5 hatches in total.... We are beginners and i was wondering if you would consider a cockerel processing video to help us.... We are doing lots of research but its quite overwhelming.
    Between myself, my partner and our eldest son we are confident with the killing but its the processing im feeling overwhelmed with!

      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't comfortable doing the video on our 2nd/3rd go (which was the most recent) because we've had issues previously and I didn't feel comfortable, but I think next time I could share some of the things we've learned, we are still, by no means experts though! :D. I did watch a lot of different videos on here to see what methods I wanted to use etc!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว

      Perseverance to be honest, and repeating it. We had lots of conversations about how it needed to be done, and the benefits of doing it and that we couldn't hatch more chicks if we couldn't manage to do the processing etc etc.
      Tried to have the set up in such a way to make it as smooth as possible, and we all got in and helped, someone held legs in the cone while someone else cut the throat and someone else was working on piecing the previous chook etc.

      Their thighs/legs are very much a darker meat than a broiler style chicken, and there can be some toughness to it sometimes, but they're super tasty, I like to do things with them like make bone in chicken soups or I grind the breasts up, I'm going to actually make chicken kievs with some of the breasts tomorrow!
