Just don't use a regular spiral drill bit. Instead, use a brad point, forsner, or spade type bit that cuts at the outer edge of the hole. With any of these, don't try to "step up" the diameter from one bit to another If you try to do this, there is no way to keep the bit centered (unless you have the wood clamped, and are using a drill press.) Good Luck!
