Nice lecture I enjoyed I'm learning more about the Magna Carta it has to do with my ancestors, Kings John, William III, and Edward, and William Marshal and the Bigods (some of the Barons}
Thanks Prof. Colley. I'm now even more energised to investigate the evolution of this Magna Carta form of thought. Yes its old, but it evolved and will further...and from how ideas of the past evolved we can often predict ideas of the future.
22:30 Helena Normanton was a great human being and did interpret the Magna Carta the way it should be. And the way it should be is how it impacts maximum no of people. A strong advocate of Indian independence and anti imperialism. Something very rare back then in British society.
The part of the text - later to become known as Clause or Article 61- but best described today as the Security Clause, enjoins, indeed, compels ANYMAN to distress and distrain the establishment, in the original translation, I believe. That was pretty inclusive then. (I only noticed that very recently.) Article 61 is in force today and has been since 24/3/2001. Absolutely not a media whisper about it! I wonder why not?
Take notice it does not apply to people who sold themselves or their kids, in to slavery like all are deceived into doing these days. Citizen=subject=slave have no right to it, as it say; - We will not as freemen be jailed without charges - We will not as freemen be denied a fair trial of our peers - We will not as freemen allow warrant less searches - We will not as freemen allow confiscation of our holdings - We will not allow you taxes without our basic rights under the Magna Carta being met .
Another person that believes in natural rights. Natural rights cannot be enforced. If you were consistent with your beliefs today, back then you would also see the Magna Carta as just as illegal, unless you expressly signed it for yourself, remember? You're not a man, or free in the common law legal sense, you do not hold land, like actual land, and not some crummy apartment somewhere. Under both those definitions you would not be recognised in any common law court.
A healthy examination of this document yet, for me, it's disappointing that the immediate wake of the Magna Carta in England from 1215 to near 1297 including the Second Barons' War and Statue Of Marlborough are not mentioned.
What’s wrong with common law? She doesn’t address Article 61 that deals with Treason and Tyranny which we need today as we now have a corporation rather than a Govt of the people by the people for the people... Article 61 is the highest constitutional law ever written, and as we know Treason was committed by the Nice treaty and all other EU treaties have stopped us of our sovereignty and rule of law. All our courts are corporations.
In response to the Treaty of Nice being unlawfully granted royal assent (which covertly left out our codified constitution and was treasinously passed into law), a committee of 68 barons got together in 1999 and lawfully (re) invoked Article 61 of the Magna Carta 1215, on 23rd March 2001. Since no one in authority has publicly revoked this invocation of Article 61 of the Magna Carta 1215, then common law takes presidence, and all acts and statutes of parliment are null and void from that date, because the Queen broke her coronation oath and gave up her sovereignty and her right to authorise royal assent. Tony Blair repealed the 1795 treason act in 1998 from capital punishment to life in prison, and now we know why. Ask this question to police and courts if you're ever stopped or taken to task for not obeying "acts and statutes" - "I stand under common law, so do you have authority to make a demand on me since Article 61 of the Magna Carta 1215 was invoked on 23rd March 2001?". Anyone in office who publicly denies Article 61 of the Magna Carta 1215 is committing sedition, and anyone in office who acts against you under commercial law (acts and statutes of parliment), is committing high treason.
To view Magna Carta as a "peace treaty" is incredibly myopic and misses themost salient point of the document. Magna Carta contains the genesis of the concept of due process of law. Magna Carta contains the following language (translated from Latin of course): "No freeman shall be taken, or imprisoned, or be disseised of his Freehold, or Liberties, or free Customs, or be outlawed, or exiled, or any otherwise destroyed; nor will we pass upon him, no condemn him, but by lawful Judgment of his Peers, or by the Law of the Land. We will sell to no man, we will not deny or defer to any man either Justice or Right." This is from whence the concept of Due Process originated. I am a retired judge from the state of Montana in the US and served on the bench for 26 years and handled more that 30,000 cases in that time. I can say that I myself, as a trial judge , as did my fellow judges, always asked myself during the course of any criminal case "Has the prosecution carried their burden and conformed their actions to the requirement of the law in this proceeding?" This injunction derives directly from the language cited above. It has real, every day impact on massive numbers of people arouond the world every day. It limits and restricts the power of the government to abuse its power and it protects citizens from governmental overreach. It might be viewed as a peace treaty by this lecturer, but it is immeasurably much more that that. I feel that it denegrates this magnificent document to relegate it to the level of a mere peace treaty. Outrageous.
A group of powerful private interests ,the barons, dictating terms to the sovereign conjures up an image of today's powerful private interests, the central banks, dictating terms to sovereign governments. Plus ca change.....

Very interesting and thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you for uploading this.
Absolutely excellent. Thank you.
Simply delicious and enjoyable, thanksa lot proff. Colley
A very comprehensive overview of The Magna Carta. Why not even a passing reference to the English Civil War or Bill of Rights??

Article 61 of the Magna Carta was envoked in March 2001 by the Barron’s.
the original idea was to limit unlimited or absolute power-it first covered the lords and freemen-but people came to know it should include everybody

All our courts are corporations.
And annulled by the pope in 1216. Not in subsequent reissues or in statute law. Good luck with invoking it though

I wish the government would respect the Magna Carta.
Catholics conceived it, Henry VIII ruined it, and Wokeness killed it.

Very boring delivery.
