2008 Escape steering issue re-evaluated as a quick fix as opposed to a $6-700 fix as per the dealership. Second opinions matter, and can save you alot of money!
My opinion. For a little more work, replace the upper u joint and shaft assy at the same time. My ex-wife just bought a mariner, and the seller said he replaced the lower joint. Well, the upper joint/ shaft assy was also worn out and need replaced, which I will do. I think the little bit of play is also causing a steering column rattle over 80 MPH. My thought is it's makes the torque sensor become misaligned, causing the PS motor to rapidly turn on and off causing the rattle.
I have a 2009 I got from my Grandma. Dealership charged $400+ to install Torque Sensor. Didn't correct the problem, now they said we need the steering column, which cost $2200
Sounds about right for new steering column. I hope they didn’t charge you for what didn’t fix the problem. I priced part yesterday and it was about $1200 for the entire column which also includes the sensor. Changing just the sensor isn’t a guarantee to fix the problem unfortunately.
I just am not brave enough to risk this part on something so cheap and most have a bigger bolt that makes it harder to install for many. I would not even risk a Dorman on this part. But to each their own.
My steering wheel knocking and become hard while driving . If the turn the ignition off and back on its all back to normal I was told its low my steering pump is leaking And 2nd opinion said my steering column is broken and all needed replacement ( its a hybrid 2012)

I was able to keep driving it with a bit of difficulty. I can't afford any major repairs so I'm just concerned if I keep driving it is it is it going to cause physical damage?
I'm sorry to hear that your dealing with a vehicle issue. I know it can be very stressful. It can be very dangerous to drive even temporarily without steering assist. You need to get into a shop asap to have this looked at. Ask around to family and friends who can refer you to a trusted mechanic, and dont be afraid to ask lots of questions BEFORE getting any repairs.
well I brought my ford escape to Huntington station to be repaired .and thay had said that my steering column needed to be replaced so I asked if there was a recall on my model number thay had said it wasn't on a recall vehicle stood there for three days . and the costs of fixing it came out to $3600.00 it's an electric steering unit. also in the price needed to replace the tires .for an alignment. customers expence.
Yes. I am currently doing it on my 09. It requires lots of muscle to turn but I have been driving it for a week. Someone not strong could probably not turn the wheel. I cant turn it with only one arm at standstill, I need two hands.

I replaced my power steering assist replaced and it also has yolk play i will be replacing the yolk. Would this play in the shaft turn the assist off ?
@@odessa4js i learned today that it does matter. The nuckle that attaches the shaft to the rack had too much play which prevented the angle sensor from finding center and turn the assist off. I replaced the shift and all is well again.
$30 temporary solution. Go to mechanic who has advanced scanner which can scan steering wheel module and clear error code b2278. Power assistant should work after that but be aware that it may failure in the future again (on my 2008 Escape it happened second time after 3 years, mechanic cleaned code error and power assistant woking again).
Way to much misinformation. A few videos i watched kept talking about it being a rack and pinion. Which are bloody expensive. I do hope my issue is this . I'm a visual learner . So long as i know where to look and what to do I can definitely do this myself. With the guidance of TH-camrs like yourself. Who needs collage if you can get educated for free? (I am mainly talking about automatics when i say that) Anyways I'm hoping my issue is this .
Actually it is listed as a truck at most "repair parts stores" like autozone. It is a SUV. This Video helps a lot of people from being scammed by shady repair shops. I've replaced numerous parts up to this point and still no fix. I have always thought it was in the steering column or part of it. Sounds like i was right.

When replacing this joint, there is a top and bottom they are different. i made this misstake. they look very similar. only goes on one way.

Do you happen to know the recall number, we have an 08 they say that says 09 on the title and they are dodging us about the recall.
I am betting that U-joint gets replaced with the intermediate shaft replacement solving the problem but at a much greater cost to the owner.

I just give it a tug all the way around - it has a bit of a lip that holds it in. I just keep pulling (careful not to rip anything).

Thanks I might replace that on mine... Yhere was some leakage on the boot so conrads said replace rack and pinion. Migt not need all that.
I received a call from the Ford dealer quoting me $875 +tax saying they would have to replace the upper lower steering shaft.

I don't have access to a 16, but as far as I know they're the same. You may have warranty left on your 16 however. I would make a call to the dealer.
