Unfortunately everyone who sees it has the reaction of 'this is awesome. How did it fail?' it's a pity that not only is it a brilliant film but they had a trilogy lined.
I remember trying to get my friends to go see it, and none of them wanted to because of how bad the 90s one was. I think the big issue was poor marketing.
Dredd is still a sleeper hit film, the Slo-Mo effect is stunning. Urban is brilliant as Dredd, the action is vicious and lethal, no quarter given, just like the comic version. One of my fave films
the end credits of the urban film if they had a 5 second shadow of a judge and then it whispers 'Deathhhhhh'...... would have made the sequel inevitable IMO
I thought they were going to make a trilogy, with Rico in the second movie and Death in the third (or vice-versa, not sure which of them is a bigger deal/threat). Real shame that the first didn't do well.

They didn’t want karl to wear the mask the whole time and he still did for less money to keep fans happy so I was told the movie was good to wish more success for it

It was Pegg that told him which story arcs he should read to understand the character, and through that became a fan himself. As for the helmet thing, I don't remember that ever being an issue considering it was one of the biggest criticisms from Dreddheads of the Stallone version, I doubt they'd even consider making that mistake again. Urban did publicly state that he wouldn't be removing his helmet, but I believe that was in reference to the Stallone film rather than anything the producers of the new film where planning.

The producer and writer, Alex Garland, had worked with 2000ad before, and had been in regular contact with John Wagner throughout production, and the studios involved in production weren't exactly big money studios. Don't forget, the budget was a mere fraction of the Stallone version.
Gotta love how most Jude Dredd villains are either killed or thrown in a prison that actually works. Dredd is quite competent for comic book standards. Even the few recurring ones have only sporadic appearances and not even them are safe (Poor, poor, Mean Machine Angel).
Yeah, PJ was a major omission from the list. I'd also have liked to see the martial artist Deathfist, if only to see how people would react to his real name - Stan Lee.
That judge Dredd movie was perfect. It is so rare that I actually like a movie, and like it enough to watch multiple times, at other times when I feel like watching a movie. If you haven’t seen it, just buy it and add to the library.
I remember buying the very first edition of 2000AD and thinking the adults had made some sort of mistake. I'd been reading a lot of Amazing Stories and Uncanny Tales and they were pretty cool, but this was a whole other level of brutally graphic, sophisticated storytelling with no stabilisers. Touched by the guiding hand of Tharg the Mighty, I was changed forever by it.

2000AD is one of the greatest comics ever published because of the unique weekly content.this was one of the comics in the early 90s that got me intested in comics as a whole. The artwork was totally on another level. Something that was lacking from Marvel and D.C. And Rebellion Game the guys behind the Sniper Elite and Aliens Vs Predator Games who now own the comic are doing a live action TV show. Can't wait.

Maybe in a real big way 👀 he's my favourite Dredd Villain, he killed his way to his family fortune from childhood, hiding behing his age and supposed simpleness, as he grows and gets busted, he always escapes the Judges, even Dredd, and even became the mayor of Meg 1 under a new identity eventually. His story is crazy.
The Dredd /Batman crossovers are incredible. Judge Death needs to appear in the next film(there needs to be another). Only two to date seems criminal..

Maybe stories when he is a kid (The child, highly intelligent serial killer.), The Pit (Excellent procedural which is a great look in the day to day of mega city judges.), America (A classic.). Now that's one hell of a rogue's gallery. This reminded me of a survey I once read about (pre-internet); people were asked to name ten of Batman's enemies...the ones created for the Adam West TV show didn't count...but most were able to get ten, as well as ten of Dick Tracy's enemies. But when asked to name ten of Superman's enemies...everybody said Lex Luthor, some included Brainiac and the Parasite, even less could say Mr. Mxyzptlk, but no one could name ten.

Dredd was the best of the 2 films IMHO. While the Stallone version got the city & bike right, the Karl Urban version was better in so many ways, especially not removing his helmet, that's pure Judge Dredd, 😎👍👍

Watch Future Shocks: The Story of 2000AD. It wasn't just Dredd, the whole comic was crazy, and has been more influential than a lot of people realise. Writers and artists from 2000AD have had a big impact on the modern comic book industry.

Dredd not dread, he's had many games, Dredd vs death was good as was the snes game, what do you mean the first run?, 2000ad has been going continuously every week since '78, it doesn't have runs.
Dredd is not a hero LOL he's a proper anti hero. He saves the day but has little or no redeeming qualities. Think this is why the original movie was so bad, they just didn't get that Dredd is not a nice person, he is the law.
Been reading 2000AD pretty much since Prog 1 (though Dredd wasn't in that one) and this is pretty good list. Ma Ma was pretty small fry by comparison. The list is too small to fill with all the other insane perps like PJ Maybe, Judd, The Judge Child, Fink Angel, Kazan, Nero Narcos, Judge Grice, Judge Edgar, President Booth, Deathfist, Mr Moonie... There's loads
I have to say one of my favourite comic book stories of all time in set in the Dredd universe and Dredd doesn't appear in it. Song of the surfer. It's so emotional.
i would have thought the judge Dredd universe would be more dystopian sci fi. i didn't realize it skewed so far into the supernatural, i really need to get more into the comic books, im always surprised at how these storylines turn out.
Not a fan of 2012 Dredd. I think the Stallone version had the right atmosphere and looked closer to the comics. Its only real faults were Dredd taking off his helmet and Rob Schneider.

So happy that Mega City One hasn't yet been canned. Apparently writing has been completed but filming has been put on hold due to Covid.

Dredd is not a hero LOL he's a proper anti hero. He saves the day but has little or no redeeming qualities. Think this is why the original movie was so bad, they just didn't get that Dredd is not a nice person, he is the law.
2000ad is an endless treasure trove of potential films and TV series. I hope for ABC warriors.

Been reading 2000AD pretty much since Prog 1 (though Dredd wasn't in that one) and this is pretty good list. Ma Ma was pretty small fry by comparison. The list is too small to fill with all the other insane perps like PJ Maybe, Judd, The Judge Child, Fink Angel, Kazan, Nero Narcos, Judge Grice, Judge Edgar, President Booth, Deathfist, Mr Moonie... There's loads
I have to say one of my favourite comic book stories of all time in set in the Dredd universe and Dredd doesn't appear in it. Song of the surfer. It's so emotional.

i would have thought the judge Dredd universe would be more dystopian sci fi. i didn't realize it skewed so far into the supernatural, i really need to get more into the comic books, im always surprised at how these storylines turn out.

Not a fan of 2012 Dredd. I think the Stallone version had the right atmosphere and looked closer to the comics. Its only real faults were Dredd taking off his helmet and Rob Schneider.
