    Its finally time! I've started watching Angel! I was super excited to see this. I really enjoyed the different vibe that Angel has and how were dealing with more adults in this series. Obviously, I was happy to see Cordelia since I thought she was gone. I really like her in the show so far. In general, I thought this was a pretty good first episode! What were your thoughts?

    Angel is a darker, more grown up show than Buffy (which is, after all a teen drama). In Angel, people can be monsters too. The guy from Wolfram and Hart is human, but that doesn't mean he's good.
    Cordy's changed a lot since season 1 of Buffy. Her family has lost all their money, for one thing, so she's probably got as little financial support at home as she has trying to make her own way in LA. Her relationship with Xander (and the other Scoobies) changed her as well, even after it was over,

    6:57 So, a fun fact about that fade transition: it cuts off the end of that scene. The full version shot had Angel lick Tina's blood from his fingers, but somebody (I forget who) decided that was a bit too fucked up for the premiere so instead the episode cuts away before it happens.

    The basic idea of _Buffy_ was to take the trope of the monster stalking the blond girl in the alley and flip it on its head, with the blond girl ready and able to take on and defeat the monster. In _Angel,_ the writers returned to the trope, so the blond girls in the alley once again need to be saved from the monsters. Except that the savior is also sort of a monster.

    The guy who plays the lawyer, Christian Kane, is one of the main characters on Leverage (another reaction-worthy show) where he gets to play a character a lot true to himself and, according to my sister, is emphatically sexier.

    Watching this episode makes me super nostalgic for Lost, since we get both Josh Holloway (Sawyer) and Tracey Middendorf (Bonnie). I would love to see Riley react to Lost, although I think Alias, a seriously underappreciated JJ Abrams creation, would track more in the Buffy vein.

    This is a great pilot for a great show. A completely different atmosphere compared to BTVS. Also Angel looks like a totally different character from Buffy's boyfriend: still brooding, but also smiling every now and then! Cordelia is a very nice addition to the series, I think she fits perfectly here, while in BTVS there was not much left to do for her character. Well, at the time they still had to improve on stage makeup for vampires but they then consulted the BTVS colleagues and things went better. So welcome to the City of Angel...s!

    That was a good observation on opportunities and women being taken advantage of, which is why Tina was surprised Angel would let her stay at his place without asking for anything (i.e. sex) because she had been taken advantage of before. Reminds me of that old 80s Poison video "Fallen Angel" th-cam.com/video/AelpbAegA-4/w-d-xo.html. And yes the transitions were different and intentional

    Angel wasn't quite one-dimensional on _Buffy the Vampire Slayer,_ but watching this episode shows how underdeveloped his character was due to all the other characters only thinking of him as Buffy's vampire boyfriend (even when he was Angelus).

    I'm like a broken record every time someone reacts to this episode but the Russell/Jeffrey Epstein parallels are so creepy to me, especially as Joss grew up in the entertainment industry. An ambiguously wealthy and influential guy with a large, fortified estate who has a pyramid scheme of women recruiting prey for him? He may not have based it on Epstein exactly but I'd bet my house that this is based on people like him that Joss knew about and this being the plot for the pilot episode was definitely to set the mood for L.A or 'the big city' being a seedy place where people get taken advantage of and pulled into structures/games that are bigger than themselves.

    • @The-Underbaker
      @The-Underbaker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Cordelia's too old for Epstein. Harvey Weinstein would be a better fit, especially as Cordelia wants to be an actress.

      This isn’t a new idea. Wealthy and powerful men have been preying on ambitious and impressionable girls since the dawn of entertainment. The 1920s-1940s were full of these sexual predators that promise aspiring singers and actresses by "I’ll make you a star" then they sexually extort them.

    Angel is an incredible show in its own right. Much more darker than BTVS. It is important to watch both shows in watch order because of the crossover plots, storylines, and characters appearing in both. This was a strong opener where as Angel was very much a one dimensional character in BTVS, here we get to see a more richer character we brilliant flashbacks to see how he developed. The addition of Cordy is great too and Doyle provides some great comic moments. Enjoy the show the best episodes of Angel are easily a match for BTVS and many surpass it. Enjoy the show, you will love it.

    • @liteflightify
      @liteflightify 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don’t really think it’s “much darker” than Buffy, especially when you consider a couple Buffy seasons. I think people lean on that a bit too much. It does tend to have darker origins for MOTW’s, and they tend to have more focus and weight here than they do on ‘Buffy’. While it is more consistently moody and maudlin show than Buffy, isn’t really about growing up like Buffy and is literally darker, as in the lighting and cinematography.

    • @killianlpc
      @killianlpc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@liteflightify Agreed it is literally darker in lighting and cinematography than BTVS was a very 'Bright, Shiny' show. The content in Angel is still much more adult ,' probably because they are all adults' agree later seasons of Buffy also. I don't really want to go into specifics and on why it is darker in vibe, as it would spoil it for Riley.

    I honestly never cared much for Angel on BTVS. His character always seemed boring and one-dimensional to me (not counting Angelus' run in season 2, which was fantastic). I was so hesitant to give this show a chance, but I'm glad I did. His character is really allowed to grow and shine on his own merit.
